Another Alaskan cub is now in the headlines. Three month old Kali, a little boy cub, is now living at the Alaska Zoo after his mother, tragically, was shot by a hunter. To his credit, the hunter was horrified that he had shot a nursing mother and went looking for the cub, and brought Kali to safety.

I still don't understand why anyone is legally allowed to shoot one of these magnificent endangered, intelligent animals, and it is such a sad story, but at least Kali is safe.

Ein weiterer Alaskan cub ist jetzt in den Nachrichten. Drei Monate alten Kali, einen kleinen Jungen cub, lebt jetzt in der Alaska Zoo, nachdem seine Mutter tragischerweise von einem Jäger erschossen wurde. Zu seiner Ehre wurde der Jäger entsetzt, dass er eine stillende Mutter erschossen und suchte nach dem Jungen und brachte Kali in Sicherheit.

Ich verstehe immer noch nicht, warum jemand gesetzlich zulässig ist, eine dieser herrlichen gefährdet, intelligenten Tiere zu schießen, und es ist so eine traurige Geschichte, aber zumindest Kali ist sicher.

And it is time to make another visit this precious little girl who is now living in Glacier Run at the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky.

Two year old Qannik is growing up, now tipping the scales at 350 pounds. She has such a good time playing and making trouble, and always has plenty of new toys and fun activities.

One of her favorite activities is pushing her big black plastic rocker through the doorway and letting it tumble down the stairs, making a great racket. Then her zookeepers have to bring it back up, and it is heavy, they say. Then she does it again!

Eine ihrer Lieblingsbeschäftigungen treibt ihren großen schwarzen Kunststoff Halfpipe durch die Tür und ließ sie stürzen die Treppe hoch, macht eine große Schläger. Dann wurde ihr Tierpfleger, um es wieder up haben, und es ist schwer, sagen sie. Dann tut sie es wieder!

A fellow visitor told me that a few months ago, Qannik was in the glassed-in area, and could see Siku across the way, swimming and playing in the big pool. Qannik couldn't take her eyes off him. He still weighs twice what little Qannik weighs, so they won't be playing together anytime soon. The staff at the zoo always take their cues from the bears, as to when they might be ready for such a step.

Ein anderer Besucher erzählte mir, dass vor ein paar Monaten, Qannik in das Glasfenster Eisbärengehege war, und konnte Siku über den Weg zu sehen. Siku wurde schwimmen und spielen in den großen Pool. Qannik schaute ihn intensiv. Siku wiegt noch doppelt so viel wie kleine Qannik, so werden sie nicht zusammen spielen jederzeit schnell. Das Personal im Zoo immer ihre Schlüsse aus dem Bären, um, wenn sie vielleicht bereit sein.

 Until then, the zoo has a rotation schedule for the three polar bears who live there, plus a Grizzly mama bear, and her two cubs. I keep hoping to visit on a day when Siku is out and playing, but it is kind of hit or miss, and I keep missing Siku. On that day I did see Siku's grandmother Arki, Qannik, and the two Grizzly cubs.

Bis dahin hat der Zoo eine Drehung Zeitplan für die drei Eisbären, die dort leben, plus ein Grizzly Mama Bär, und ihre beiden Jungen. Ich hoffe immer noch auf einen Tag zu besuchen, wenn Siku ist raus und spielen, aber es ist eine Art eine Frage des Glücks, und ich halte fehlende Siku. As for little Kali up at the Alaska Zoo. I would expect they would keep him there for a time to let the folks see him and enjoy him, but they don't have space for another polar bear long term. The logical place for him to settle is the Buffalo Zoo where there is a little girl cub named Luna, the same age, who is being hand raised because her mother Anana did not show the proper maternal instincts for taking care of her. These two cubs would learn to be grown up polar bears together through play and interaction. This is why Raspi was brought to Nuremburg Tiergarten to be a companion to Flocke, and this pair is still together in a park in France. Some sources confirm that Kali will be moving to Buffalo, then later on to the St. Louis Zoo, where a new enclosure is being opened in 2015.

Luna is the only polar bear at the Buffalo Zoo now. Her mother Anana was moved to the Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago, and her father Nanuq is now at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. The Buffalo Zoo is in its final fundraising drive to build a new polar bear enclosure, so Luna can stay in Buffalo.

Wie für wenig Kali bis zum Alaska Zoo. Luna ist der einzige Eisbär im Buffalo Zoo jetzt. Ihre Mutter Anana wurde dem Brookfield Zoo außerhalb von Chicago zog, und ihr Vater Nanuq ist jetzt an der Columbus Zoo in Ohio. Die Buffalo Zoo ist in seiner letzten Spendenaktion, um einen neuen Eisbärengehege zu bauen, so Luna in Buffalo bleiben.

Six year old twin sisters Aurora and Anana have a new friend. 25 year old Nanuq arrived from the Buffalo Zoo in November, and the sisters seem to like him a lot.

On the day I visited, Nanuq had decided to roll in the dirt, and was quite the brown bear. In contrast, the sisters were clean and tidy. It was a warm day in early March, and love was already in the air. Nanuq likes both the girls, but he followed Anana around like a puppydog. She was properly coy, but encouraged his attentions.

Am Tag besuchte ich, Nanuq hatte beschlossen, in den Schmutz zu rollen, und war ganz der Braunbär. Im Gegensatz dazu waren die Schwestern sauber und ordentlich. Alaskan Brown Bears Brutus and Buckeye get the melon treat

The polar bears became excited when they realized a zookeeper was on the roof with food, but alas, he was throwing the melons to Brutus and Buckeye, the Alaskan Brown Bears that are the neighbors. Nanuq, Anana and Aurora had their noses in the air, sniffing the food. But this was not a treat for the polar bears today.

Nanuq was born in 1987 the wilds of Alaska, but has been living in zoos for most of his life. He lived in the Alaska Zoo for his first year, then moved to the Henry Villas Zoo in Madison Wisconsin where he lived until 2009. He was at the Buffalo Zoo with another Anana, until the zoo recently closed the polar bear exhibit in order to build a new one, Arctic Edge, to open in two years. Before that Anana left in January  to go to the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago, Illinois, she gave birth to a little girl cub named Luna. Unfortunately, Anana did not show motherly love to the cub, so the zoo decided to raise her by hand. Luna has loving zookeepers to take care of her now.

Nanuq must have a thing for girl bears named Anana. He is hanging around her like a young man in love. Soon it will be mating season, so maybe the Columbus Zoo will have cubs this winter.

In any case, Aurora and Anana's mother gave birth to another set of twins at the Toledo Zoo. These three cubs, one in Buffalo and two in Toledo, are the only cubs born in US zoos this season, and there were none last year.

In jedem Fall gab Aurora und Anana Mutter Kristall Geburt zu einem anderen Satz von Zwillingen an der Toledo Zoo vor ein paar Monaten. Diese drei Jungen, ein in Buffalo und zwei in Toledo, sind die einzigen Jungen in US-Zoos in dieser Saison geboren, und es gab keine im vergangenen Jahr.

Today is International Polar Bear Day! It is a great day to visit the bears. It is so much fun to actually go to the various zoos to get to know our polar bear friends, but you don't have to travel to watch some of these big fluffy white bears.

Here are some of the webcams I check on to see what the bears are up to and what kind of weather they are enjoying.

I learned about the first webcam four years ago when Flocke's brother Milak was born in the wonderful Aalborg Zoo in Denmark. I watched him grow up in that dark den, and take his first steps outside into the enclosure. I watched him learn to swim. I could also watch his mother Victoria, his father Felix and their friend Malik. When Malik had Baby Augo, I watched him grow up too.

I have visited the Aalborg Zoo, and waved at the cameras. It was like stepping through the looking glass to be in the polar bear enclosure, and walk around on the stones. The Aalborg Zoo has become a part of my world.

Ich erfuhr von der ersten Webcam vier Jahren, als Flocke Bruder Milak in der wunderbaren Aalborg Zoo geboren wurde. Ich beobachtete ihn wachsen in dieser dunklen Höhle, und seine ersten Schritte hinaus in die Welt. Ich beobachtete ihn schwimmen lernen. Ich konnte auch beobachten seine Mutter Victoria, sein Vater Felix und ihr Freund Malik. Wenn Malik Augo hatte, sah ich ihn aufwachsen zu.

Siku

Also in Denmark, little Siku, now one year old, has grown up on the webcam at the Skandinavisk Dyrepark near Kolind. Here you can check on him for two hours every morning, from 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern Time (USA). It is marvelous to watch him develop. Siku is Polar Bears International's ambassador to protect the environment.

Auch in Dänemark hat sich wenig Siku, jetzt ein Jahr alt, auf der Webcam gewachsen. Hier können Sie ihn für zwei Stunden zu überprüfen jeden Nachmittag von 2 bis 4 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit. Es ist wunderbar zu sehen, wie er zu entwickeln.

Zoo Brno

This winter I have enjoyed checking on the twin polar bear cubs in Zoo Brno, Czech Republic. Mother Cora is kept busy with these lively babies. There is sound, too, and you can hear their little motors running when they are happy.

In diesem Winter habe ich seit einiger Zeit erleben die zwei Eisbären im Zoo Brno, Tschechische Republik. Mutter Cora (Mutter von Bill Gelsenkirchen ZOOM) ist damit beschäftigt, mit diesen aktiven Babys. Sie sind laut, und man kann ihren kleinen Motoren laufen, wenn sie glücklich sind zu hören.

Kansas City Zoo

I also have enjoyed watching 23 year old Berlin meet young Nikita at the Kansas City Zoo, to see how she bosses him around. They have been having a lot of fun in the snow, since Kansas City has gotten several blizzards recently.

Anori is celebrating her first birthday on January 4. She made news not only because she was the only cub born last year, but also because she is the half sister of the late Knut, who died last year at the age of 4 at the Berlin Zoo. He was the world's most famous polar bear, and his death broke the hearts of his many fans all over the world. So it was like a ray of hope when we learned that Lars had fathered another cub.

Sie feiert ihren ersten Geburtstag am 4. Januar. Sie machte Schlagzeilen, nicht nur weil sie die einzige cub in diesem Jahr geboren war, sondern auch weil sie die Halbschwester des verstorbenen Knut, der im vergangenen Jahr im Alter von 4 im Berliner Zoo gestorben. Er war der weltweit bekannteste Eisbär, und sein Tod brach die Herzen seiner vielen Fans auf der ganzen Welt. So war es wie ein Hoffnungsschimmer, als wir erfuhren, dass Lars hatte einen weiteren cub gezeugt.

Last winter, Zoo Wuppertal announced that a cub had been born, and released a few pictures from the den. The cub was named before keepers knew she was a girl. Anori means “wind.” The name would suit a girl or a boy cub.

Letzten Winter gab Zoo Wuppertal, dass ein Junges geboren worden war, und veröffentlichte ein paar Bilder aus der Höhle. Das Junge genannt wurde, bevor Tierpfleger wusste, dass sie ein Mädchen war. Anori bedeutet "Wind." Der Name würde ein Mädchen oder einen Jungen cub anzupassen.

Last spring, when Anori made her public debut, visitors had to stand in long lines for hours to get a glimpse of the little bear. Anori's fans came from all over Germany to see this little wonder. The Mother-Cub enclosure is set back, and has limited visitor room so people had a short time to gaze at this cute little girl

Im vergangenen Frühjahr, wenn Anori ihr öffentliches Debüt hatten die Besucher in langen Schlangen stundenlang stehen, um einen Blick auf den kleinen Bären zu bekommen. Anori Fans kamen aus ganz Deutschland, dieses kleine Wunder zu sehen. Die Mutter-Cub Gehäuse ist zurück, und verfügt über begrenzte Besucher Raum, damit die Leute hatten eine kurze Zeit, um dieses niedliche kleine Mädchen schauen.

So much fun with the simple things in life

I visited her in September, when she was 8 months old. She and her mother could move as they wished from the main area, with a nice pool, through the house, to the mother-cub area in the back. Anori would sometimes take a toy from one area to the other. In the mother-cub area, she had a folded up carpet to play with, and she had a lot of fun with that. She also liked to stand to swat at the hanging vines.

Ich besuchte sie im September, wenn sie 8 Monate alt war. Sie und ihre Mutter bewegen konnte, wie sie von den wichtigsten Bereich gewünscht, mit einem schönen Pool, durch das Haus, um die Mutter-cub Bereich in den Rücken. Anori wäre manchmal ein Spielzeug aus einem Bereich in den anderen. In der Mutter-cub Bereich, hatte sie einen zusammengefalteten Teppich zu spielen, und sie hatte eine Menge Spaß damit. Sie auch gerne zu swat an den Lianen stehen.

At times Anori seemed reluctant to swim in the big pool, but once she got in, she loved to swim and dive. Vilma usually let her play, but sometimes would play with her daughter, or even take her toys, but then give them back. Sometimes Vilma would start a game with her daughter. Vilma is good playmate, as well as a good mother.

Zeitweise Anori schien nur ungern in den großen Pool schwimmen, aber sobald sie stiegen ein, sie liebte, zu schwimmen und zu tauchen. Vilma in der Regel lassen sie spielen, aber manchmal würde mit ihrer Tochter zu spielen, oder sogar ihre Spielsachen, aber dann geben sie zurück. Manchmal Vilma wäre ein Spiel mit ihrer Tochter zu starten. Vilma ist guter Spielkamerad, sowie eine gute Mutter.
