It is a good day to catch up with Qannik, the 3 year old cub who was rescued in Alaska after she was separated from her mother and sister.

Es ist ein guter Tag, um aufzuholen mit Qannik, dem 3-jährigen Eisbär - Mädchen, die als Jungtier in Alaska gerettet wurde, nachdem sie von ihrer Mutter und Schwester getrennt wurde.

Qannik now weighs over 400 pounds. She loves to play in the pool at the Louisville Zoo, and her favorite toy is a big log.

The zoo has plans to introduce her to 4 year old Siku, but we don't know when. Siku weighs 640 pounds.

We have lost Anton much too soon

The cuddly white giant Anton is gone from us. He was a friendly, playful and very popular bear at Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart, Germany. He leaves behind a grieving widow, Corinna, who will miss him so much.

Der kuschelige weiße Riese Anton ist von uns gegangen. Er war ein freundlicher, verspielter und sehr beliebte Bär im Zoo Wilhelma in Stuttgart, Deutschland. Er hinterlässt eine trauernde Witwe, Corrina, der ihn so sehr vermissen wird.

One of the great polar bear love stories of all time has just ended with Anton's death over the weekend. Anton and Corinna have been together at Stuttgart since 1990, practically their whole lives.

Einer der großen Eisbären Liebesgeschichten aller Zeiten hat gerade mit dem Tod von Anton über das Wochenende geendet. Anton und Corinna haben zusammen in Stuttgart seit 1990, praktisch ihr ganzes Leben.

Anton was the father of Wilbär, who now lives in Orsa Bear Park in Sweden.

Anton war der Vater von Wilbär, dieser lebt heute im Orsa Bärenpark in Schweden.

Anton, only 25 years old, didn't have to die, but someone was careless or intentionally threw a bag or backpack into the enclosure. Although Anton was usually not one to eat things thrown into the enclosure, this time Anton ate whatever it was. He had been acting unwell for several days,  and died on Sunday of internal inflammation, in spite of the great efforts of his caretakers to save him.

Anton, nur 25 Jahre alt, sollte so nicht sterben, aber jemand war unvorsichtig oder warf absichtlich eine Tasche oder Rucksack in das Gehege. Obwohl Anton war in der Regel kein Bär, der Dinge, die ins Gehege geworfen wurden dann fraß, diesmal aber fraß Anton, was auch immer es war. Er war auffällig mehrere Tage krank und starb am Sonntag an internen Entzündung, trotz der großen Bemühungen seiner Tierpfleger, um ihn zu retten.

Such carelessness by visitors has caused the deaths of other polar bears. 14 year old Andy died in the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City in 2003 when he ate a glove that had an elastic cuff. Andy was the father of Anana of the Brookfield Zoo, and grandfather of cub Luna of the Buffalo Zoo. Andy was also the father of Kiska and Koluk, now in Albuquerque.

Solche Fahrlässigkeit von Besuchern hat den Tod von anderen Eisbären verursacht.Der 14-jährige Andy starb im Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City im Jahr 2003, als er einen Handschuh, der eine elastische Manschette hatte fraß. Andy war der Vater von Anana aus dem Brookfield- Zoo, und Großvater von Baby Luna vom Buffalo Zoo. Andy war auch der Vater von Kiska und Koluk, jetzt in Albuquerque.

Andy's mother Becky died in 2007 at the Buffalo Zoo from eating something thrown into the enclosure. This was only a few months after polar bear Kelly died, also in Buffalo, from eating foreign objects. Later in 2007, seven year old Kinepak, also died at the Buffalo Zoo, and it was suspected he died from eating a garbage bag. Kinepak was the offspring of Aussie and Arki. The barriers in the old Buffalo enclosure were low.

The glass barrier at Wilhelma is very high, and things could not be accidentally dropped. And yet the keepers have taken many pairs of shoes and other objects out over the years.

Die Glasbarrierein der Wilhelma ist sehr hoch, und es kann nicht versehentlich geschehen sein. Und doch haben die Pfleger viele Paar Schuhe und andere Gegenstände im Laufe der Jahre gefunden.

Is the only solution to have a barrier so high that people can't reach the top? To have the enclosure totally blocked off?

Ist die einzige Lösung, eine Barriere so hoch zu machen, dass die Menschen da oben nichts mehr rüber werfen können? Um das Gehege komplett abzusperren?

Anton, as a little cub, got off to a rocky start. He was born at nearby Karlsruhe Zoo in 1989, during a time of intense polar bear breeding. Many cubs were born every year at Karlsruhe, and the cubs were taken away from their mothers so the zoo could have cubs the next year. Anton was sickly, while his half-sister Antonio was very bold and healthy. As time went by, Anton recovered, and grew into a huge bear. Antonio was a dwarf bear, and she did not grow. She now lives in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM in her own enclosure.

Anton, als ein kleines Junges, hatte einen schwierigen Start. Er wurde in der Nähe im Karlsruhe Zoo im Jahr 1989 in einer Zeit der intensiven Eisbärenzucht geboren. Viele Jungtiere wurden jedes Jahr geboren in Karlsruhe, und die Jungen wurden von ihren Müttern getrennt, so konnte der Zoo wieder Jungtiere haben im nächsten Jahr. Anton war kränklich, während seine Halbschwester Antonio war gut genährt und gesund. Im Laufe der Zeit, Anton erholte sich und wuchs zu einem riesigen Bären. Antonio war ein Zwerg Bär, und sie wollte auch nicht mehr wachsen. Sie lebt jetzt in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM in ihrem eigenen Gehege.

I have visited Anton twice, and was always impressed with what a handsome bear he was. Corinna adored her husband, and in the afternoon, she would settle down next to him and wash his ear. Anton and Corinna were famous for this ritual. They were absolutely devoted to each other.

Ich habe Anton zweimal besucht, und war immer beeindruckt, was er für ein schöner Bär war. Corinna verehrt ihren Mann, und am Nachmittag lag sie neben ihm und putzte ihm sein Ohr. Anton und Corinna waren für dieses Ritual berühmt. Sie waren eng miteinander verbunden.

When cub Wilbär was born in December 2007, Anton and Corinna had to be separated. Anton pined away for his love, so close and yet so far. The keepers had to whitewash the window between the enclosures so he couldn't see her, but still he pined away. Finally, Wilbär was sent to Sweden, and the parents were reunited.

Als Baby Wilbär im Dezember 2007 geboren war, mußten Anton und Corinna getrennt werden. Anton schmachtete nach seiner Liebe, so nah und doch so fern. Die Pfleger hatten das Fenster zwischen den Gehegen übertüncht und so konnte er sie nicht sehen, aber dennoch sehnte er sich nach ihr. Schließlich wurde Wilbär nach Schweden geschickt, und die Eltern waren wieder vereint.

I have never seen a more devoted bear couple. It will be hard for Corinna to move on with her life, now that Anton is gone.

Ivan, the Russian bear with a secret identity (Boris)

Eight year old Ivan, whose real name is Boris, was born November 12, 2005 in Moscow, and is the older brother of Rasputin, or Raspi, companion of the famous Flocke in Antibes, France. Boris now lives in the Copenhagen Zoo.

Acht Jahre alt ist Ivan, dessen wirklicher Name Boris ist, er wurde am 12. November 2005 in Moskau geboren und ist der ältere Bruder von Raspi, Begleiter der berühmten Flocke in Antibes, Frankreich.

Boris is also younger brother to Kap, who is now in Hannover Zoo, and older brother to young Tonja, now in Tierpark Berlin. Their parents are Murma and Untai, of the Moscow Zoo.

Boris ist auch der jüngeren Bruder von Kap, unsprünglich aus Neumünster,der jetzt im Hannover Zoo lebt, und der ältere Bruder der jungen Tonja, sie lebt jetzt im Tierpark Berlin. Ihre Eltern sind Murma und Untai, aus dem Moskauer Zoo.

I don't know why Boris is called Ivan in Copenhagen. Ivan the only name they know, and they have never heard him called Boris.

Ich weiß nicht, warum Boris nun Ivan in Kopenhagen genannt wird. Ivan der einzige Name, den sie kennen, und sie haben ihn noch nie Boris gerufen.

Boris came to Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark in 2007 when he was two years old. Noel, who was a 4 year old lady bear, was already there.

Noel, born December 3, 2003 in Fasano Italy, is the daughter of Marissa and the Italian Felix, and is the sister of Giovanna, Dea and another unnamed cub born in 2012. Noel moved to Copenhagen in 2005.

Noel, der 3. Dezember 2003 in Fasano Italien geboren wurde, ist die Tochter von Marissa und des italienischen Felix und sie ist die Schwester von Giovanna, Dea und einem anderen namenlosen Jungtier im Jahr 2012 geboren. Noel zog nach Kopenhagen im Jahr 2005.

Up until last February, the two polar bears lived in a very old bear pit, but then The Arctic Ring opened. It is a magnificent architectural wonder, although I find it difficult to navigate. The new habitat is designed to give the bears plenty of places to dig and play and swim.

Bis vergangenen Februar lebten die zwei Eisbären in einem sehr alten Bärengraben, aber dann wurde *Der Arktis Ring * eröffnet. Es ist ein prächtiges architektonisches Wunder, obwohl ich finde es schwierig fand mich zurecht zu finden. Der neue Lebensraum soll den Bären viele Raum zum graben und zum spielen und schwimmen geben.

For me, it was too much concrete, and visitors have to walk too far between viewing windows and the different areas. It has a very long spiraling tunnel down to the lower areas, and you walk through the underwater viewing tube to descend, which means that while you are watching Boris swim overhead in the tunnel, there are people walking back and forth.

Für mich war es zu viel Beton, und für die Besucher zu weite Wege zwischen Sichtfenster und den verschiedenen Bereichen zu laufen. Es hat eine sehr langer Tunnel spiralförmig bis in die unteren Bereiche und Sie gehen durch den Unterwasser-Sichttunnel zu Fuß, was bedeutet, dass, während Sie Boris beim schwimmen über ihren Köpfen beobachten in dem Tunnel, gibt es Leute, die hin und her gehen.

 The Artic Ring has a massive swimming pool for the bears
and an incredible viewing tunnel for the visitors.

 while playing in the tunnel.

The amazing experience of seeing Boris swimming overhead in the underwater tube in The Arctic Ring is somewhat diminished by the walking traffic through the tube. It would be nice to be able to see the outside of this area, but it is not available to the public.

Die erstaunliche Erfahrung Boris beim Schwimmen über den Köpfen der Besucher zu sehen ist großartig, aber der Tunnelrereich ist etwas eingeengt im Arktis Ring, Es wäre schön, in der Lage sein, dieses auch außerhalb dieses Bereichs zu sehen, aber dies steht nicht der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung.

Boris has had the big area to himself for many months and is has been having a grand time. He has places to dig and climb, and there is a basin for dust baths, and just lounging around. 

Boris hat die große Anlage, er hat eine großartige Zeit. Er hat Plätze zu graben und auch klettern, und es gibt ein Becken für Staubbäder und oder nur Faulenzen.

There was a moment when Boris stood up and lunged at some of his visitors, just to see them jump, taking great delight in the surprise. Boris is very tall, and he loves to play with the people on the other side of the glass.

Es gab einen Moment, da stand er auf und stürzte sich auf einige seiner Besucher, nur um zu sehen, wie sie weg springen,für alle eine große Freude durch diese Überraschung. Boris ist sehr groß, und er liebt es, mit den Menschen auf der anderen Seite des Glases zu spielen.

He also has spent some time banging on the door that leads to the old enclosure, knowing that Noel is on the other side and he has missed her.

Er hat auch einige Zeit damit verbracht an der Tür zu Klopfen, die zu dem alten Gehege führt, wissend, dass Noel auf der anderen Seite ist, und er sie vermisst hat.

Since the zoo thought Noel might be pregnant this fall, they had isolated her from Boris by moving her back to the old enclosure. She has been in and out of the birthing den, and there is a camera in the den. The keepers think she is easily agitated, and may have been pregnant in previous years but could not keep it. They wanted to keep her calm, so the two bears have been separated since August or September. It appears that there is no cub this year, but Noel's sister Giovanna has had twin cubs in Munich. Maybe next year.

Da der Zoo dachte Noel vielleicht in diesem Herbst schwanger sein könnte von Boris, weshalb man sie zurück in das alte Gebäude isoliert hatte. Sie hat sich zurück gezogen, war auch in der Wurfbox gewesen, und es befand sich eine Kamera in der Höhle. Die Pfleger hofften das Beste und sie sei schwanger, in den Jahren zuvor konnte sie aber den Nachwuchs nicht behalten. Sie wollten sie ruhig halten, deshalb waren die beiden Bären seit August oder September getrennt. Es scheint, dass es keine Jungtier in diesem Jahr gibt, aber Noel's Schwester Giovanna hat Zwillinge in München zur Welt gebracht. Vielleicht gelingt es im im nächsten Jahr.

In the new habitat, I did not see a public mother-cub enclosure or a way to divide the large area. and I am not sure where the zoo plans to put Noel if she were to give birth. Maybe Boris might go back into the old enclosure area, so the mother and cub can have the big area.

Im neuen Eisbärenbereich habe ich nicht gesehen, ob es eine öffentliche Mutter-Nachwuchs Gehege oder einen Möglichkeit, um die große Fläche zu teilen. Und ich bin mir nicht sicher, wo der Zoo plant, Noel unterzubringen, wenn sie Nachwuchs bringen würde.

For now, it looks like Boris and Noel will be together in the wonderful new Arctic Ring again, sharing swimming games over the tunnel, and happy to be together again.

Vielleicht könnte Boris wieder in die alte Gehegebereich gehen, so dass die Mutter und Jungtier die große Fläche haben können.
