Wildborn Qannik is 13 years old now, and about to get her first boyfriend.

 Borealis, or Bo for short, made the trip from Henry Vilas Zoo in Wisconsin to Glacier Run in Louisville a few weeks ago, and is now out of quarantine, the zoo has announced. Bo has been exploring the outdoor habitat and maybe in a few weeks, he will spend some time with Qannik.

Qannik has never shared space with another bear, but she is quite familiar with having male bears as close neighbors. Bo's brother Siku used to live in Glacier Run, and he would watch Qannik across the way in the other enclosure. But since Qannik is property of Fish and Wildlife, she was not allowed to be part of the breeding program until just a few months ago. Lately, she has been enjoying the companionship of a wild Night Heron, who has adopted the bear habitat as its home. It will be interesting to see how Bo reacts to the bird.

Qannik also is familiar with Lee, who lived at Glacier Run for some time, but is now back in Columbus with Bo's much older sister Aurora. Each of the male bears in Glacier Run was close by in a downstairs bedroom area, so Qannik would see them and smell them and even growl at them. But to have no bars in between, that will be something new for our girl.

Qannik was raised by keepers after her rescue from the oilfields of Alaska, first in the Alaska Zoo, and then after she was flown to Louisville in late June of 2011.

Bo is the five year old son of Crystal and the late Marty, so he is closely related to most of the younger bears in the USA zoos. Qannik, being rescued from the wilds of Alaska as a tiny cub, has valuable genes.

Bo has been living with older lady bear Berit for three years in Henry Vilas Zoo, so she has taught him how to get along with a female roommate. Bo is young, so will probably not be dominant with Qannik, who is used to being a diva.

They do have some things in common. Bo always loved to swim in the pool at Henry Vilas, and Qannik is quite the water baby too. She really enjoys her underwater adventures in the deep dive pool at Glacier Run. So maybe they will have some fun together in the water.

The two potential sweethearts also like their toys. Qannik will have to learn to share her giant pickle.

So now Louisville is about to get its own version of "The Bachelor." Here's hoping it is love at first sight for our two polar bear sweethearts.

The Louisville Zoo put together a festive party on January 9 to celebrate the fifth birthday of Qannik, a polar bear girl who was rescued from the wilds of Alaska as a tiny cub. She spent some time recovering at the Alaska Zoo, and then was flown to the Louisville Zoo by UPS in late June of 2011.

Januar, um den fünften Geburtstag von Qannik zu feiern, ein Eisbär Mädchen, welches aus der Wildnis von Alaska als winziges Jungtier gerettet wurde. She weighed in at only 15 pounds at the age of 4 months at the time of her rescue. She now weighs around 530 pounds and is happy and healthy.

 Heitzman's, a local bakery, had donated a peanut butter cake for Qannik, and keepers had made frozen cubes from puppy formula. Qannik also had colorful frozen buckets containing fish and peanut butter to play with, and to eat, along with a few leaves of lettuce.

It was a warm morning, about 55 degrees, and a large crowd gathered to sing Happy Birthday to the playful little bear as she dove into the special cake.

  She ate most of the cake, gobbled up the frozen chunks of puppy formula, and then went to work on the ice bombes, with layers of colored kool-aid and fish and peanut butter.

Later she threw the chunks into her pool, and dove in after them. She tried to hide the chunks in her favorite hiding holes in the rocks, only to have them float to the surface. It was a very entertaining game for Qannik.

We may see this as a fun party, but these activities are also enrichment for Qannik, and she learns through play. It also makes life at Glacier Run very interesting, so Qannik does not get bored.

Since Qannik was born in the wild, no one knows her real birthday, but the date of January 10 was chosen as a good guess, and the zoo celebrates Qannik's birthday on the Saturday closest to that date.

The warm winter has caused 6 year old young male polar bear Siku to be even more interested in Qannik.

Der warme Winter hat dazu geführt, dass der 6-jährige junge männliche Eisbär Siku noch mehr Interesse an Qannik zeigt.

 Even though they are never together, they do live very close to each other and can see and smell each other. Once Qannik had come downstairs, Siku was reluctant to leave her vicinity. He finally was coaxed out, and had a little snack under the Christmas tree, but then retreated downstairs to be near his Qannik.

Auch wenn sie bislang nicht zusammen sind leben sie sehr nahe beieinander und können sich sehen und riechen sich auch gegenseitig. Sobald Qannik nach unten kam, war Siku sehr zögernd ihre Nähe zu verlassen. Little Miss Qannik, the star of Glacier Run at the Louisville Zoo, has had some ups and downs in her five years of life.

She and her twin sister were born in Alaska under an oil field during the winter of 2010. When she was only a few months old, in February of 2011, a blizzard separated her from her mother and sibling, and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife stepped in to rescue the little darling, who only weighed 15 pounds.

Qannik spent several months at the Alaska Zoo, where she became quite the celebrity.

When she was about five months old, she was flown to the Louisville Zoo in late June, 2011, and her presence was shrouded in mystery at first, as she was kept from the public for some time. Her primary keeper Jane Anne took good care of her. Bit by bit, the shielding papers were taken off Polar Bear Alley, and people could see the beautiful and very playful Ice Princess.

Also arriving at Glacier Run that year was a young male named Siku, who was year older. He came from the Toledo Zoo in September of 2011, and while Qannik and Siku know each other well from living near each other downstairs, they have never been in the enclosure together.

Ebenso kam im Glacier Run PARK in diesem Jahr ein junger Eibär namens Siku an, der ein Jahr älter war. Er kam aus dem Toledo Zoo im September des Jahres 2011, und mittlerweile kennen sich Qannik und Siku schon recht gut, die nahe bei einander im Nachbargehege leben, sie sind aber noch nie gemeinsam in einem Gehege zusammen gewesen.

During the summer of 2013 Qannik developed lameness in one of her hind legs, with a wound that would not heal. She was diagnosed with a life-threatening fungal infection, blastomycosis, which was throughout her entire body. Qannik was off exhibit for many months as she was being treated, and slowly brought back to health.  

Im Sommer des Jahres 2013 Qannik entwickelte eine Lähmung in einem der Hinterbeine, verursacht durch eine Wunde, die nicht heilen wollte. Sie wurde mit einer lebensbedrohlichen Pilzinfektion, Blastomykose, diagnostiziert, die ihren ganzen Körper betraf. Qannik war somit ausgeschaltet für viele Monate, sie musste behandelt werden, und langsam wurde sie wieder gesund gemacht.

Qannik had always liked to roll in the mulch in the large enclosure, and it was thought that she contracted the fungal infection from the mulch. Needless to say, there is no longer any mulch in the bear habitat at Louisville. 

Qannik hatte immer gern in der Laubdecke im großen Gehege herumgerollt, und man vermutete, dass die Pilzinfektion aus dem Mulch übertragen wurde. Unnötig zu sagen, es gibt nun keinen mehr Mulch mehr im Bärengehege im Louisville Zoo.

While she was kept in isolation downstairs underneath Glacier Run, the staff provided her with toys, and also masterpiece chalk drawings on the wall, for her amusement. She would only take her medicine in mayonnaise, and only from her mommy-keeper Jane Anne Franklin, who had cared for her since she arrived in Louisville. Jane Anne had flown to the Alaska Zoo to accompany Miss Qannik on her big journey.

Qannik has flourished at the Lousiville Zoo since her recovery, except for a brief dental emergency recently. Keepers noticed she had a broken tooth, and Qannik had to undergo a root canal to repair it. Thus, there are shaved spots on her paws and neck from the recent surgery.

Qannik ist im Lousiville Zoo seit ihrer Genesung wirklich aufgeblüht, mit Ausnahme eines kurzen zahnmedizinischen Notfalls. Qannik now weighs in at 527 pounds, and her keepers are concerned that she might be a little too heavy, for she is not as interested in playing with her toys as she had been.

Polar bears' weight fluctuates during the year, reaching the highest point in December. Female polar bears, because of the demands of reproduction, have a harder time losing their seasonal weight.

Qannik's neighbor Siku, a five year old male, will probably reach 900 pounds by next month, but he will have an easier time losing it. Typically, polar bears gain weight as winter approaches, and they lose it in the spring.

At the Louisville Zoo, the keepers monitor their weight very carefully, and try to keep their weight at an optimum level for their age and activity level. A bear that weighs too much will not be active and playful.

The keepers also monitor their cortisol level (stress hormones), by testing each bear's poop every day. They also measure their other hormones, and Siku and Qannik's hormone fluctuation are on the same schedule, from living in the same home, even though they are never actually together. The Louisville Zoo keeps a very close watch on every aspect of their bear's development.

As Qannik is the property of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, the decision to put Qannik and Siku together is theirs to make. So for now, Siku and Qannik will just have to remain friends at a distance.
