It was just announced today that 25 year old Patches will be moving from the Erie Zoo to a beautiful new polar bear enclosure at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro.

Patches came to the Erie Zoo December 11, 2007 from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, where she lived with her twin sister Bam Bam (officially called Fanny, but everyone calls her Bam Bam). She was 20 at the time, and had lived her entire life with her sister at the zoo in Omaha.

She had previously given birth to a cub at the Henry Doorly Zoo, but it did not survive. There were expectations that she would become a mother after the move, but it just never did happen. She had several male bears live with her, but they died of various medical problems. She has been all alone for several years.

The North Carolina Zoo was home to Willy and Aquila for many years. The much loved Willy moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo and the popular Aquila moved to the Detroit Zoo in 2011 when renovations began at their old home Aquila returned home last spring, but died suddenly in September. Willy died a few weeks later in Wisconsin. These two bears left behind many heartbroken fans.

Der North Carolina Zoo war die Heimat von Willy und Aquila für viele Jahre. Der viel geliebte Willy wurde in den Milwaukee County Zoo verlegt und die beliebte Aquila zog in den Detroit Zoo in 2011, als Renovierungsarbeiten begannen. The polar bear enclosure in the Erie Zoo is old and the pool is very small. In addition, the Erie Zoo is closed during the winter months, and Patches loves to watch the people come and go, so it must have been a little lonely every winter. The zoo staff took wonderful care of Patches, and always tried to make everything a game for her. They are very fond of her at the Erie Zoo, but this sweet lady bear will enjoy an improved lifestyle in her new home.

Das Eisbärengehege im Erie Zoo ist alt und der Pool ist sehr klein. Darüber hinaus wird der Erie Zoo während der Wintermonate geschlossen und Patches liebt es zu beobachten. Die Leute kommen und gehen, also muss es ein wenig einsam gewesen sein in jedem Winter. Wilhelm, Willie, or Willy. He was known by many names

One of the most well-known polar bears in the world, 28 year old Wilhelm, has left us.

Willie started life in the Copenhagen Zoo, born January 11, 1985. He was sold as a cub to an animal handler in Germany, and that is why he has a German name. Not much is known about his life in Germany. He lived a good many years under terrible conditions with other polar bears in the Suarez Brothers Circus, a Mexican Circus. Here they lived in small cages and were given a very poor diet, and hardly any exercise.

Willie begann das Leben im Zoo Kopenhagener, geboren 11. Januar 1985. Er wurde als Jungtier zu an einen Tier -Handler in Deutschland verkauft, und deshalb hat er einen deutschen Namen. Nicht viel ist über sein Leben in Deutschland bekannt. Er lebte zu viele Jahre unter schrecklichen Bedingungen mit anderen Eisbären in der Suarez Bruder-Zirkus, eine mexikanische Circus. Hier lebten sie in kleinen Käfigen und erhielten eine sehr schlechte Ernährung, und hatten kaum Bewegung.

Also known as Willie, or Willy, he enjoyed over a decade of the good life in two American zoos after being rescued from his sad years in the circus. The rescued bears were known as the Suarez Six, although there were at least seven polar bears involved. These bears were confiscated in November 2002 by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service while they were under U.S. jurisdiction in Puerto Rico.

Als Willie bekannt oder auch Willy genannt, genoss er über ein Jahrzehnt das gute Lebens in zwei amerikanischen Zoos, nachdem er von seinem traurigen Jahren im Zirkus gerettet wurde. Die geretteten Bären wurden als Suarez Six bekannt, obwohl es sieben beteiligte Eisbären waren. The bears flew through Memphis and went to three zoos. Wilhelm and another male bear Masha went to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. Masha also had compromised health because of the poor treatment by the circus. Wilhelm, now called Willie or Willy, had bonded with Masha in the circus, and they remained fast friends at the Asheboro zoo. After Masha died in 2007, Willie pretty much lived alone until he moved two years ago to the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.

Photographer Valerie Abbott fell in love with Willy, and spent many hours in his company, enjoying his antics and playing camera games with the big guy. We are lucky to have so many incredible pictures of the distinctive-looking Willy, thanks to Valerie.

Upon hearing of his death, Valerie was heartbroken. She shares a few of her thoughts here:

“Why was Willy so special you may ask. To begin with he was rescued from a Mexican traveling circus and had to live in terrible conditions. When he and another bear arrived at the North Carolina Zoo they were in bad health. Through much time and patience their caregivers nursed them back to health.

“From that time on Willy loved to show off for humans. He loved to hear the squeal of young children when he would swim towards the glass they were behind. He would grab his big black ball, which weighed about 50lbs, and toss it like it was a basketball. He may next find a giant plastic pickle or even a Pepsi crate (For some odd reason he preferred Pepsi to Coke). The zoo even installed a snow making machine to let him enjoy the cold.

“During the winter months there were plenty of Mondays, my volunteer day, that it was just the two of us. These were very special times as he would locate me and swim towards me and play with unbridled joy. I spent hours with him and was fortunate to capture so many of these times with photos and some video. Willy became famous through my lens making friends and fans worldwide.

“When he left our zoo while the exhibit was being enlarged, I made the journey twice to Milwaukee to visit him.

“It's doubtful many people will understand my connection with this particular bear but he touched my heart like no other.”

To her special bear friend, Valerie says, “Thank you Willy for bringing such joy to me and so many others. May you rest in peace,”

"Warum war Willy so besonders war werden Sie fragen. Zunächst ist er aus einem mexikanischen Wanderzirkus gerettet wurde und musste unter schrecklichen Bedingungen leben. Als er und ein anderer Bär an der North Carolina Zoo ankamen, waren beide Bären in einem schlechten Gesundheitszustand. Durch viel Zeit und Geduld ihrer Betreuern pflegten sie die Eisbären wieder gesund.

"Von diesem Zeitpunkt an wurde Willy von den Menschen geliebt geliebt. Er genoss es, das Quietschen von kleinen Kindern zu hören, wenn er an dem Glasfenster beim Schwimmen zu sehen war. Er würde seine große, schwarzen Kugel greifen, die etwa 50 pounds gewogen hat, und dann warf er sie wie einen Basketball. Alsnächstes fand er eine riesige Gurke aus Kunststoff oder sogar eine Kiste Pepsi (Aus irgendeinem Grund, den nur Willy weiß, bevorzugt er Pepsi statt Coke). Der Zoo installierte sogar eine Beschneiungsanlage, damit er die Kälte geniessen konnte.

"In den Wintermonaten gab es viele Montage, mein ehrenamtlicher Tag, dass nur

wir beide ganz allein waren. Dieses waren sehr besonderen Zeiten, wenn er mich finden würde um auf mich zu zu schwimmen und spielte mit ungezügelter Freude. Ich erbrachte Stunden mit ihm und hatte das Glück, so viele von diesen Zeiten mit Fotos und einige Video- Aufnahmen festzuhalten. Willy wurde durch meine Linse berühmt, Freunde und Fans aus aller Welt.

"Nachdem er unsere Zoo verlassen Hatte, während die Aussenlage vergrößert wurde, machte ich die Reise zweimal nach Milwaukee, um ihn zu besuchen.




Es is etwas schwierig zu verstehen, veile Menschen werden meine Vergindung mit diesem speziellen Bären nicht einfach nachvollziehen können aber er hat mein Herz berührt wie kein anderer." 




Zu ihrem besonderen Bären Freund,Valerie sagt: "Danke an Willy. Du hast anderen und mir so viel Freud geschenkt. Mögest du in Frieden ruhen."

In 2011, when work started on building a new polar bear facility in the Asheboro Zoo, Willie moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.

Here he met the aristocratic Snow Lilly, who had rejected her previous mate Zero. Zero was sent to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY, and Willie was invited to move in with Snow Lilly.

Hier traf er auf die adlige Snow Lilly, die ihrem früheren Kumpel Null abgelehnt hatte. Null wurde an den Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY geschickt, und Willie wurde eingeladen, sich mit Snow Lilly zu bewegen.

Willy had been happy at the Milwaukee County Zoo, but his arthritis had given him trouble in recent years. Willie also had the addition burden of having been “declawed” because he swiped at someone in his circus days.

It has been a time of great loss in the polar bear world. In a period of two weeks, we have said goodbye to three well-loved and iconic polar bears. Aquila was one of these iconic bears.

Es war eine Zeit großer Verlust in der Eisbär Welt. In einem Zeitraum von zwei Wochen haben wir Abschied von drei gut geliebt und ikonischen Eisbären. Aquila war einer dieser legendären Bären.

 We lost 21 year old Aquila on September 9, a sudden and unexpected tragedy. He had returned to his home in the North Carolina Zoo in May, after part of the enclosure renovations were completed. and his fans were so happy to have this playful bear back home. Well known photographer Valerie Abbott was his biggest fan, and was thrilled to have Aquila back. Aquila seemed to be fine and healthy on Monday, but was found dead Tuesday morning. He died from a ruptured stomach.

Verloren wir 21-jährige Aquila am 9. September, eine plötzliche und unerwartete Tragödie. Er hatte seine Heimat in der North Carolina Zoo im Mai zurück, nachdem ein Teil des Gehäuses Renovierungsarbeiten abgeschlossen wurden. und seine Fans waren so glücklich, diesen spielerischen Bär wieder nach Hause müssen. I saw Aquila in the Detroit Zoo two years ago, on a sleepy summer afternoon. It was time for his nap, so I did not get very many photos of this magnificent bear. He was lazing around in the sun, not far from his good friend Bärle.  They got along well. The zoo staff thought that Aquila would be a good mate for Bärle's young daughter Talini, but Talini found this older guy intimidating, so there were no cubs.

Ich sah Aquila im Detroit Zoo, an einem verschlafenen Sommernachmittag vor zwei Jahren. Es war Zeit für seine Nickerchen, so dass ich nicht sehr viele Fotos von diesem herrlichen Bären gemacht habe. Er lag faulenzend in der Sonne , nicht weit entfernt von seiner guten Freundin Bärle. Sie kamen gut miteinander aus. Das Zoo Personal hatte gehofft, dass Aquila würde ein guter Kumpel für die junge Tochter von  Bärle -Talini - werden, aber Talini fand diese älteren Mann einschüchternd, so gab es keinen Nachwuchs.

Aquila

Aquila was one of triplets born at the Louisville Zoo in November of 1992 to parents Irsinaki (1973-2000) and Skeena (1974-2002). He and his siblings, Aurora and Arkturus, went to live at the North Carolina Zoo in 1994. Aurora died in 1999 and Arkturus died in 2002. Aquila had also spent time in the Louisville Zoo again, and in the Cleveland Zoo.

Aquila war einer von Drillinge im November 1993 im Louisville Zoo geboren, Eltern Irsinaki ( 1973-2000) und Skeena ( 1974-2002 ). Er und seine Schwester Aurora und Bruder Arkturus gingen im Jahr 1994, um im North Carolina Zoo zu leben. Aurora starb im Jahr 1999 und Arkturus starb im Jahr 2002. Aquila hat auch Zeit im Louisville Zoo verbracht  und im Cleveland Zoo.

In 2011, when the North Carolina Zoo decided to make renovations in their enclosure, Wilhelm (Willy, Willie) was moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo, and Aquila spent two years in the Detroit Zoo with another rescued circus bear, Bärle. Aquila had returned to North Carolina in May, to great fanfare. His fans had missed him, and welcomed him back with cheers. He was to live only four more months in his newly renovated home.

Valerie remembers her wonderful bear friend, saying "Aquila OWNED his exhibit, being one of the first inhabitants at the zoo, he had been there the longest.”


She recalls, “He loved to show off by diving off his rock, he must have really enjoyed the "oohs" and "aws" that always followed. Even though he left us a couple times he was always a favorite when he returned. One of my best memories of him was from years ago when he got a pumpkin as an enrichment treat. He carried it around while swimming with it, and just dared anyone to try and take it from him. He had a funny way of tilting his head and wriggling his nose as a new aroma invaded his exhibit. He just returned in May to thrill the crowds.”
“Though the exhibit had been empty for almost two years (expansion) it never seemed so empty as when I first returned after his death." NOTE, he was the first one I used my perfume trick with. I would put on a little of my favorite so he would smell me coming. He would always give me that little nose wiggle letting me know he knew I was there,” Valerie remembers. 

Valerie erinnert sich an ihren wunderbaren Bärenfreund und sagte: "Aquila war BESESSEN  von seinem Gehege, als einer der ersten Bewohner im Zoo, hat er  die Zeit dort am  längsten verbracht."

Sie erinnert sich: "Er liebte es, das Tauchen vor seinem Felsen  vorzuführen ,und er  muss  es wirklich genossen haben die"Ohs" und "aws" , die immer folgten. Auch wenn er uns ein paar Mal verlassen  musste, so war er immer der Favorit, wenn er zurückkam. Einer meiner besten Erinnerungen an ihn war vor Jahren, als er einen Kürbis als Bereicherung zur Unterhaltung  bekam. Er trug ihn herum beim Schwimmen mit ihm, und keiner hat gewagt ,zu versuchen ihm den Kürbis wegzunehmen.  Er hatte eine lustige Art und Weise zu ki den Kopf  zubewgen und  seine Nase zu kräuseln,wenn ein neues Aroma  in das Gehege eingedrungen  war. Er war gerade  im Mai zurückgekommen um die Massen zu begeistern."

"Obwohl die Anlage seit fast zwei Jahren (Expansion) leer  stand schien es nie so leer zu sein wie  nach seinem Tod." Hinweis, er war der erste, an  dem ich mein Parfüm Trick verwendet  habe . Ich habe nur wenig von meinem Lieblingsparfum benutzt, so konnte er es und mich riechen.Und mit dem leicheten Wackeln seiner Nase gab er mir zu verstehen daß er wußte,ich bin da!" erinnert sich Valerie .

Irsinaki and Skeena were parents of seven cubs, but now, after the death of Aquila, only Neil and Buzz survive. Neil and Buzz live in the Como Zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota, but also spent two years at the Detroit Zoo during renovations to their Minnesota home. The only other remaining members of the family are Berlin of the Kansas City Zoo, and Berit of the Cincinnati Zoo; Aquila was their uncle. Also the children of Berlin's late brother Yukon: Lee in the Denver Zoo, Haley in the Memphis Zoo and (Lincoln Park Zoo) Anana.

Irsinaki und Skeena waren Eltern von sieben Jungen, aber jetzt, nach dem Tod von Aquila, haben nur Neil und Buzz überlebt. Neil und Buzz leben im Como Zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota, davor  auch zwei Jahre lang im  Detroit Zoo  während  der Renovierungen ihrer Anlage in  Minnesota. We have also been saddened by the news of two other polar bear deaths.

Gus of the Bronx Zoo was euthanized on August 28 due to deteriorating health caused by a thyroid tumor. He was born in the Toledo zoo. Gus was 27 years old, and is said to have been visited by 20 million fans.

Gus der Bronx Zoo wurde am 28. August aufgrund der sich verschlechternden Gesundheit durch eine Schilddrüsen- Tumor verursacht eingeschläfert. Er wurde in der Toledo Zoo geboren. Gus war 27 Jahre alt, und soll von 20 Millionen Fans besucht wurden.

And now we have just learned that Aquila's nephew Klondike, age 18, was found dead in his enclosure at Sea World in Florida on September 13.

Und jetzt haben wir gerade gelernt, dass Aquila Neffe Klondike, Alter 18, wurde tot in seinem Gehege im Sea World in Florida am 13. September gefunden.

We will miss you, Aquila. We will miss all the wonderful bears we have lost this year.

Right now, it is time to meet Willie as he is today living the good life in the Milwaukee County Zoo. He has a lot of fans in Asheboro, North Carolina , where he lived from 2002 to 2011 at the North Carolina Zoo. At that time, work started on a new polar bear facility in the Asheboro Zoo, so Aquila went to Detroit, and Willie went to Wisconsin to share a home with a chilly lady named Snow Lilly, who is about the same age as Willie. Snow Lilly is the mother of Tundra, born in 1991, of the Bronx Zoo.

Willie was born in the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark on January 11, 1985 to Lucia I and Nonok I. From 1986 to 2002 he was in a Mexican Circus, under terrible conditions with other polar bears. Willie was rescued by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service while the bears were in Puerto Rico in November of 2002.

Von 1986 bis 2002 war er in einem mexikanischen Zirkus mit anderen Eisbären, unter schrecklichen Bedingungen. Willie wurde von der US Fish & Wildlife Service gerettet, während die Bären waren in Puerto Rico im November 2002.

Ah, I found a carrot, says Willie

Willie and another rescued circus bear, Masha, went to the North Carolina Zoo, and the two bears really bonded. It was very sad for Willie when Masha died in 2007. And now Willie is at the Milwaukee County zoo, sharing digs with Snow Lilly, a lady bear who did not get along with her previous mate, Zero. It was hoped that she would taking a liking to Willie.

Willie und ein anderer Zirkus Bär, Masha, ging in die North Carolina Zoo, und die beiden Bären waren gute Freunde. Es war sehr traurig für Willie wenn Masha starb im Jahr 2007. Snow Lilly takes a walk

During the neighboring seal show, Snow Lilly waits for her fish. It is Lilly's favorite part of the show.

While they have gotten along at times, this winter, Willie and Snow Lilly lived separate lives, and in the spring when the zoo staff brought them together, Lilly just “huffed” at Willie, and didn't want him around, even during mating season. So now they are living separate lives. Lilly comes out into the enclosure in the mornings, and Willie enjoys the afternoons outside.

On the day I visited, it was rainy and cold. Lilly was playful and in good spirits. Later, when Willie came out alone, he seemed to be suffering from his arthritis, and wasn't moving easily. The warmer days of summer are coming, though, and Willie is undergoing various therapeutic treatments for his arthritis, and some days are better than others.

Willie also has the addition burden of having been “declawed” because he swiped at someone in his circus days. This must have been a very painful episode for him, and might still be bothering him. I had never before seen a polar bear who had suffered through the cruel operation of declawing.

Willie hat auch die zusätzliche Belastung des Seins "declawed", weil er jemanden traf mit seiner Pfote in seinem Zirkus Tage. Das muss eine sehr schmerzhafte Folge für ihn gewesen, und vielleicht noch stört ihn. Ich habe noch nie einen Eisbären, der von der grausamen Betrieb declawing erlitten gesehen hat.

Willie enjoys his retirement

Willie has a reputation of being playful, and has many adoring his fans. I hope he has the chance of going back to North Carolina and being reunited with all his fans there, but I know such a move is not always advisable for a bear of advanced age.
