My Antonia

Antonia. She is sister to Katjuscha in Berlin Zoo.

In honor of International Polar Bear Day, February 27, here is a treat. Antonia is the only dwarf polar bear in the world. She lives happily in a little home made just for her in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM.

Zum Internationalen Eisbärentag am 27. Februar ist hier etwas ganz Besonderes für Euch. Antonia ist die einzige Zwergenwüchsige Eisbärin der Welt. Sie lebt glücklich und zufrieden in eigens für sie gemachten Gehege im Zoom in Gelsenkirchen.

 Antonia, now age 27, is about one third the size of a normal polar bear. She was born in Karlsruhe Zoo back in 1989, lived in Stuttgart for a short time, but has been a beloved resident of Gelsenkirchen ZOOM for most of her life.

Antonia ist nun schon 27 Jahre alt, ihre Größe ist circa das Drittel einer normalen Eisbärengröße. Sie kam im Zoo in Karlsruhe zur Welt im Jahr 1989, lebte kurzzeitig in Stuttgart, aber sie ist nun eine sehr beliebte Bewohnerin des Gelsenkirchen ZOOM schon seit langem.

A complicated game of love at the Cincinnati Zoo

Ein kompliziertes Spiel von Liebe im Cincinnati Zoo

Anana keeps busy with a blue ball while Little One naps.
They are very busy pretending to ignore one another.

When Berit left the Cincinnati Zoo in November, and a

stranger appeared in her place, 27 year old Little One sniffed 

the air with excitement. He knew there was a new girl in town. 

Als Berit den Zoo von Cincinnati im November verließ betrat ein Fremder ihren Platz, und der 27 Jahre alte Little One schnüffelte ganz aufgeregt in der Luft. Er wußte, da war ein neuens Weibchen in der Stadt.

A few weeks later, Little One and Anana, who had just arrived from the Buffalo Zoo, met face to face. The pair's interaction was positive. Everyone smiled and said "this went well." For a few minutes. And then two bears began to test each other. There has been a lot of huffing and puffing and growling, and a few face-to-face challenges.

Einige Wochen später trafen Little One und Anana, die gerade aus dem Buffalo Zoo angekommen war zum ersten Mal zusammen. Die ersten Begegnung war sehr positiv. Alle freuten sich und sagten *Das ist ja gut gegangen*: Dann, nach einigen Momenten begannen die Bären sich zu testen. Es gab sehr viele Schnaufen und Püffe und Grummeln und auch einige sehr nahe Herausforderungen.

Anana wants to be the boss. When she first met wild born Nanuq at the Buffalo Zoo in 2009, she resisted as with Little One. They eventually became friendly, and she gave birth to Luna in 2012, Anana had lived with an older dominating bear, Aussie, at the Brookfied Zoo from 2013 to 2015, She does not want a repeat of that.

Anana möchte der Boss sein. Nachdem sie mit dem in der Wildnis geborenen Nanuq 2009 im Buffalo Zoo zusammen kam war sie auch zurückhalten wie jetzt Little One. Dann bekamen sie Freunde und sie brachte 2012 Luna zur Welt. Anana wohnte dann mit einem weiteren dominanten Eisbärenmann namens Aussie zusammen im Brookfield Zoo von 2013 bis 2015, dies möchte aber so nicht wiederholen.

Good friends Berit and Little One in the old days

Little One had been bossed around by his good friend Berit for years. She always got first choice with the food, and pretty much told him what to do. He wants to get off on the right foot in this new relationship. That means he wants to be the boss this time.

Little One wurde von seiner seit Jahren befreundeten Berit unterdrückt. Sie bekamm meistens zuerst das beste Futter und zeigte ihm auch immer wo es lang ging. Diesen Weg möchte er nun nicht wieder gehen-diesmal, in dieser neuen Beziehung. Das bedeutet, nun möchte er der Boss werden.

Both Anana and Little One are small bears. Anana is under 500 pounds, and Little One is about 800 pounds. 

Beide Bären-Anana und Little One sind relativ kleine Bären. Anana wiegt um die 500 pounds, Little One ungefähr 800 pounds.

Since the day they first met, the two bears have been sizing each other up, and carefully dancing around each other, each one wanting to be dominant.  

Seit dem ersten Treffen messen die beiden Bären ihre Kräfte, tanzen sorgsam um einander, jeder möchte dominieren.

Anana pretends to relax, and Little One notices every move.

Each bear might play with a toy, or be involved in some activity, but is always watchful of the other one.

Jeder Bär spielt für sich mit einem Spielzeug, oder ist anderwie aktiv, aber immer im Auge haltend und den anderen beobachten.

When Anana goes to the swimming pool area, Little One pretends he isn't watching.

Little One plays with a crate or a spool or a log, while Anana pretends she isn't watching.

Little One spielt mit einem Kanister oder Holzspule oder einem Holzklotz, und Anana tut als wäre sie nicht interessiert.

Anana keeps a watchful eye as well.

 Anana will pace back and forth near Little One, each time getting closer until he signals his dominance with a growl or some huffing, and then she backs off.

Anana läuft immer wieder hin und zurückganz nahe an Little one, immer ein wenig näher dran, bis er er dann mit Dominanz anfängt zu grollen oder zu schnaufen,dann begibt sie sich wieder zurück.

And the chase is on!

They have little pretend play battles, and then they go to their corners.

Sie beide liefern sich kleine Showkämpfe und begeben sich dann wieder in ihre Bereiche.

There she goes, and Little One pretends to chase.

It is a game of chase and then ignore

It is a prelude to romance, as the spring mating season approaches, and their hormones will begin to bring them together.

Es wird ein romantisches Vorspiel, nun da die Paarungszeit beginnt und ihre Hormone sie wohl hoffentlich zusammen bringen wird.

16 year old Anana was brought to Cincinnati because she has already been a mother, to 4 year old Luna. Little One has fathered no offspring, and his genes are valuable, as he is not related to other bears. Little One and Berit have been great friends for years, but there was no mating activity between them last spring.

Die 16 Jahre alte Anana kam in den Cincinatti Zoo weil sie schon eine Mutter war von der 4 Jahre alten Luna.  Little One hatte noch keinen Nachwuchs gezeugt, seine Gene waren sehr wichtig da er mit keinen anderen Bären verwandt war Little One und Berit kamen seit Jahren sehr gut miteinder klar, aber es kam während der Paarungszeit zu keinen Aktivitäten.

Anana blickt immer wieder zu Little one wenn sie denkt er bemerkt es nicht, sie zeigt ihr Interesse. Und Little One beobachtet sie auch sehr genau.

Little One gives Anana a smile on the day they first met.

Spring is almost here, and we will see what that brings.

Qannik celebrates her 6th birthday!

Qannik admires her birthday cake, which she did not eat.

Qannik, the little polar bear cub who was rescued almost six years ago in the wilds of Alaska, weighing just 15 pounds, just celebrated her 6th birthday at the Louisville Zoo. Her official birthday, which is just a guess, was January 10, but her party was held on Saturday, January 7.

Qannik, das kleine Eisbärenjungtier, welches vor gut sechs Jahren in der Wildnis von Alaska gefunden wurde, 15 pounds auf die Waage brachte feierte nun ihren 6.Geburtstag im Zoo von Louisville.Ihr offizieller Geburtsatg wird auf den 10.Januar geschätzt, aber die Geburtagsfeier fand am am Samstag, den 7. Januar statt.

The keepers arranged to give Qannik a peanut butter birthday cake with her photo in frosting on it. The keepers also painted a big number 6 with marshmallow cream on a blue box , and decorated the number with colorful fruit loops cereal. Globs of cream cheese were smeared on various rocks and toys to tempt Qannik, and halibut from the grocery store were distributed about the enclosure.

Die Tierpfleger arrangierten einen Erdnussbutterkuchen mit der Glasur ihres Fotos oben drauf. Ebenso malten sie eine große 6 mit Marshmellowcreme auf einen blauen Karton ind dekorierten die Zahl mit bunten Fruchtring Cerialien. Kleckse von Käsecreme wurden auf Steine und Spielsachen verteilt um Qannik zu animieren, und Heilbuttstücke aus dem Supermarkt wurden auf der Anlage verteilt.

First there was a speech by Jane Anne Franklin, Qannik's "mother," who has overseen her care for the past five and a half years. Louisville Zoo director John Walczak was there too to say a few words.

Zuerst gab es eine Ansprache von Qanniks *Mutter* Jane Anne Franklin, die sich die seit 5 1/2 Jahren um Qannik gekümmert hatte. Auch der Direktor des Loiusville Zoos John Walczak war anwesend um einige Worte zu sprechen.

Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Qannik as the young bear paced about in the overhead bridge. In spite of the cold, clear weather of 10 degrees F, quite a few families had come to the party. Then the door was opened and Qannik ran down the ramp and checked out all the gifts and food.


Alle Anwesenden sangen *Happy Birthday* als Qannik die Brücke überquerte. Trotz der Kälte, so um die 10 Grad Farenheit waren einige Familien zu der Party gekommen. Die Tür wurde geöffnet,und Qannik eilte die Rampe herunter und begutachtete ihre Geschenke und all das Futter.

Qannik was showered with gifts and treats

The birthday girl also received some new toys, including a new yellow crazy egg and some plastic buckets.


Das Geburtstagskind bekam auch einige neue Spielsachen, inklusive ein neues Crazy Egg in Gelb und einige Plastikkontainer.

Her favorite treats seemed to be the watermelons and the frozen ice blocks with fish and fruit inside. The ice blocks were pick up and hurled in the air so they would slam the ground and break open.


Ihre bevorzugte Lieblingspeise schien die Wassermelone zu sein sowie die gefrorenen Eisstücke mit Fisch und Obst. Die Eisblocks wurden gegriffen, hochgeworfen und fielen dann zerbrochen wieder runter.

Qannik takes a moment to reflect on her 6th birthday.

Qannik never did get around to eating her beautiful cake. Maybe it was too pretty to eat. Head polar bear keeper Jane Anne said that Qannik's tastes are maturing, and she favors savory foods over sweet foods now.

Qannik schaffte es nicht, ihren wunderbaren Kuchen zu fresse. Vielleicht war er zu schön um gefressen zu werden. Haupttierpflegerin Jane Anne sagte, dass Qanniks Geschmack sich verändert hat, und sie bevorzugt nun deftiges Fressen mehr als süsse Sachen.

Qannik weighed 572 pounds in October, 2016 and at 6, she is full grown. When she was rescued in late April of 2011 on Alaska's North Slope, she weighed only 15 pounds. She lived at the Alaska Zoo for several months, and then in late June, was flown by UPS to the Louisville Zoo. She remains the property of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Qannik wog im Oktober 572 pounds, und nun mit 6 Jahren ist sie ausgewachsen. Als man sie im späten April 2011 an Alaskas Nordküste fand wog sie gerade einmal 15 pounds. Sie wohnte einige Monate im Alaska Zoo, und wurde dann im vergangenen Juni via UPS zum Louisville Zoo geflogen.Sie bleibt im Eigentum des U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Qannik is shedding her summer coat now, and her winter fur is coming in. You can see the uneven spots on her body.

For most of her life, young male polar bear cub Siku has been nearby, but they have never been allowed to play together. They would intently watch each other, and Siku desperately wanted to be with Qannik, but they have been kept apart, due to Fish and Wildlife Services regulations.

Während ihrer Zeit dort war der junge Eisbär Siku ständig nah bei ihr, aber es war nicht gestattet, dass sie miteinander spielen. Sie haben sich aufmerksam beobachtet, und Siku versuchte vergeblich zu Qannik zu kommen, aber sie wurden getrennt gehalten, wegen der Auflage des Fish and Wildlife Services.

In October, her friend Siku left to live at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, so she is now the only polar bear at the Louisville Zoo. She shares Glacier Run with a mother Grizzly bear and her two grown cubs.

Im Oktober verließ ihr Freund Siku sie um fortan im Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago zu leben, somit ist Qannik der einzige Eisbär im Louisville Zoo. Sie teilt sich die Anlage *Glacier Run* mit einer Grizzlymutter und den zwei Jungtieren.
