Szenja, a grand German-born lady, leaves us much too soon

Another of our great polar bears is gone. After a short illness, 21 year old Szenja of SeaWorld San Diego has died. We have lost so many of our lovely bears in only the last two months. No cause of death has been found as yet.

Ein weiterer unserer großartigenEisbären ist von uns gegangen. Nach sehr kurzer Krankheit ist die 21 Jahre alte Szenja gestorben. Während der letzten zwei Monate haben wir so viele unserer wunderbaren Eisbären verloren.Und bislang ist keine Todesursache bekannt.

She was born in Wuppertal Zoo in Germany in 1995 and came to San Diego SeaWorld two years later.

Sie kam im Zoo Wupperthal in Deutschland 1995 zur Welt und zwei Jahre später reiste sie dann in die SeaWorld in San Diego, USA.

 Szenja inherited her magnificent head and bold facial features from her father, the famous Boris. Szenja's brother Troll lived in Berlin, and he died several years ago. Here sister Candy lives in Sapporo, Japan.

Szenja erbte den fantastischen Kopf und den kessen Gesichtsausdruck ihrers Vaters, dem gerühmten Boris. Szenja Bruder Troll lebte in Berlin, er verstarb vor einigen Jahren. Ihre Schwester Candy lebt in Sapporo, Japan.

Szenja's longtime SeaWorld companion Snowflake had left in late February for Pittsburgh, and Szenja was alone, but she didn't mind. Polar bears are naturally loners. Szenja and Snowflake had been separated off and on, over the years.

Szenjas langjährige Begleiterin Snowflake verließ sie im letzten Februar und kam nach Pittsburgh, nun war Szenja allein, aber das machte ihr nichts aus.Eisbären sind auch in der Natur häufig auf sich gestellt.Während ihrer gemeinsamen Zeit waren sie des öffteren mal getrennt.

She found things to do. Keepers gave her a yellow plastic doll, which she carried around. 

Sie konnte sich gut selbst geschäftigen. Die Tierpfleger gaben ihr eine gelbe Plastikpuppe, die sie dann herum trug.

The keepers threw balls of cream cheese, her favorite, at the window and she gladly licked it off. 

Die Tierpfleger waren Bälle mit Käsecreme an die Scheiben, eine ihrer Leibspeisen, und sie leckte alles sauber auf.

The keepers would give the bears toys that had been played with by whales, dolphins, sea lions and seals, to make them smell interesting.

Szenja's keepers gave her various toys that had been steeped in the water of the seal enclosure, just to keep life interesting.

Szenjas Tierpfleger gaben ihr auch verschiedene Spielsachen, die sie im tiefen Pool der Robbenanlage versenkten, nur um das Leben dort interessant zu gestalten.

Sometimes they put live trout in the water, just to keep things interesting.


Manchmal gab es auch lebende Forellen im Wasser um sie zu beschäftigen.

Szenja was very good at being alone. Even when Snowflake was around, they mostly ignored each other, one of the keepers told me, except during breeding season, when they would play together a little bit, and be friendlier.


Szenja konnte sehr gut auch allein sein. Auch als Snowflake noch auf der Anlage lebte ignorierten sie sich häufig, ein Pfleger erzählte dass nur zur Paarungszeit sie etwas freundlicher und umgänglicher wurden.

 In the past two months, we have lost so many beautiful bears. I have been crying tears for Fritz, Tips, Rizzo, Yoghi, the old lady Uulu, and now Szenja. 


Während der vergangenen zwei Monate haben wir so viele wunderbare Eisbären verloren. Ich habe Tränen geweint um Fritz, Tips, Rizzo, Yoghi, die alte Dame Uulu und nun auch Szenja.

I had thought Szenja would be there for my next visit to San Diego. I loved to visit her, for she was always interesting, always fun to watch, even when she napped. It is hard to believe she is really gone.


Ich hatte gedacht auch bei meinem nächsten Besuch in San Diego Szenja wieder zu sehen. Ich habe den Besuch bei ihr sehr benossen, es war immer sehr interessant, machte Freude sie zu beobachten, auch wenn sie ein Schläfchen machte. Es ist schwer zu begreifen dass sie nun wirklich fort ist.

Szenja loves to swim

Two lovely lady bears, both age 19, live at SeaWorld San Diego. Snowflake was born at the Buffalo Zoo, but her friend Szenja came all the way from Germany almost 18 years ago, on April 22, 1997.

Zwei wunderbare Eisbärinnen, beide sind 19 Jahre alt, sie leben in der Sea World in San Diego. Snowflake kam aus dem Buffalo Zoo, ihre Freundin kam jedoch aus dem fernen Deutschland, vor fast 18 Jahren, am 22. April 1997.

Szenja was born in Wuppertal Zoo October 15, 1995. Her mother was Moscow-born Nina, and her father was Boris.

Szenja kam in Wuppertal zur Welt - am 15. Oktober 1995. Ihre Mutter war die aus Moskau geborene Nina, ihr Vater war Boris.

Szenja here has the distinctive bumpy nose of her father.

Boris was famous for his distinctive looks, with a broad and bumpy nose, squinty eyes, craggy face, and a big bump in top of his head. He was very fierce looking, and always seemed to be sneering. He died in 2009, before I could come visit him. I wish I could have met him. He was quite a character.

Boris kannte man wegen seines imposanten Gesichtsausdrucks, einer breiten und gebogenen Nase, schmalen Augen, ein mürrisches Gesicht und eine große Beule oben auf seinem Kopf. Er machte immer einen sehr furchteinflößenden Eindruck, fast konnte man ihn schnaufen hören. Er starb 2009, bevor ich in zu sehen bekam,ich hätte ihn recht gern selbst gesehen, er war schon ein Charakter.

Boris and Nina had three cubs. Troll was born November 15, 1986, and just died a few weeks ago, on February 10, 2015, at the age of 29. He spent most of his years in the Tierpark Berlin, and never did father any cubs. In recent years, because of his dominating personality, he did not mingle with the other bears, but came out by himself in the evening. Troll inherited his father's distinctive look.

Boris und Nina hatten drei Nachkommen. Troll am 15. November 1986, er verstarb am 10. Februar 2015 im Tierpark in Berlin. Er wurde 29 Jahre alt und verbrachte die meiste Zeit seiner Jahre im Tierpark in Berlin - und zeugte zeitlebens keinen Nachwuchs. Während der letzten Jahre seines Lebens, auf Grund seiner dominaten Persönlichkeit kam er mit den anderen Eisbären weniger gut zurande und wurde somit nur am Abend allein auf die Anlage gelassen. Er hat den durchdringenden Blick seines Vater übernommen.

Candy, who was born November 2, 1992, was sent to Japan when she was about a year and a half old. She now lives in Sapporo, Japan. None of the three have had cubs. (Candy gave birth to a stillborn cub last December.)

Candy, die am 2. November 1992 auf die Welt kam wurde nach gut 1 1/5 Jahren nach Japan versandt. Sie lebt nun in Sapporo. Keiner der Nachkommen hatte Nachwuchs. (Candy gebar ein totes Jungtier im Dezember letzten Jahres.)

In 1996, SeaWorld San Diego welcomed three new bears. Snowflake was American born. The other two bears came from Germany. Szenja came from Wuppertal. and Charly came from Hamburg. Charly, who was very friendly and playful, and well loved by the keepers, died in 2012 at the age of 16, having fathered no cubs with the two ladies. Charly's mother was Fanny of Gelsenkirchen Zoo, who died only a few months ago at the age of 35, believed to be the oldest polar bear in the world at the time of her death. Fanny's other cub, Victoria, still lives at the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany. Victoria also has had no cubs.

Im Jahr 1996 bekam die SeaWorld San Diego drei neue Eisbären. Snowflake kam in den USA zur Welt, die beiden anderen Eisbären kamen aus Deutschland. Szenja aus Wuppertal, Charly aus Hamburg. Charly sei ein sehr spielfreudiger und freundlicher Eisbär, sehr geliebt von den Tierpflegern, er verstarb 2012 im Alter von 16 Jahren, er zeugte mit keiner seiner Eisbärfrauen jemals Nachwuchs. Charlys Mutter war Fanny aus dem Zoo in Gelsenkirchen, die auch erst vor einigen Monaten verstarb im unglaublichen Alter von 35 Jahren, man nimmt an, dass sie die bislang älteste, im Zoo lebende Eisbärin bis zu ihrem Tode war. Fannys anderer Nachwuchs ist Victoria, diese lebt in Hagenbecks Tierpark in Hamburg und hat bislang auch noch keinen Nachwuchs.

Szenja was sent to Pittsburgh on two occasions for breeding with Koda, in 2013 and 2014, but to no avail. The first year she went alone, but in 2014 SeaWorld San Diego shut down the polar bear exhibit for six months and flew both Szenja and Snowflake by FedEx to Pittsburgh. Like last year, Szenja was thought to be pregnant, but it was either a false pregnancy or she lost it. Snowflake showed no signs of pregnancy. They are not going to go to Pittsburgh again, this year.

Szenja wurde zweimal während der Paarungszeit nach Pittsburgh verbracht um sich mit Koda zu paaren, 2013 sowie auch 2014, allerdings ohne Erfolg. Im Jahr 2013 wurde Szenja allein versendet-jedoch in 2014 wurde die Eisbärenanlage in der Sea World für sechs Monaten geschlossen, die Wild Arctic wurde überholt und renoviert- und somit kamen beide Eisbären per Flugzeug von FedEx nach Pittsburgh. Man vermutet eine Scheinschwangerschaft bei Szenja, Snowflake zeigte keinerlei Anzeichen. Somit werden in 2015 die Eisbären nicht ein weiteres Mal nach Pittsburgh verschickt werden.

During my visit to the Wild Arctic exhibit at SeaWorld, Senja spent most of her time in the water, swimming and splashing through the underwater sunbeams.  

Während meines Besuches in der Wild Arctic in Sea World verbrachte Szenja die meiste Zeit im Wasser, schwimmen und herumtobend in den Sonnenstrahlen unter Wasser.

The SeaWorld San Diego enclosure is all inside, although the roof is open and the bright California sunshine streams in. The visitor can watch the bears only through glass. A trip downstairs gives you access to a huge underwater viewing window. It is not a large area, but the pool is deep and Szenja really enjoyed it.  

Die Sea World San Diego Eisbärenanlage ist alles im Gebäude befindlich,wenn gleich das Dach offen ist und die grelle Sonne Californiens herein strömen kann. Der Besucher kann die Eisbären nur durch Glasscheiben beobachten. Etwas treppab gibt es ein etwas größeres Fenster.

Szenja does have the strong features of her father, but has a gentle personality. She is a beautiful, noble-looking bear, and gets along well with her friend Snowflake.

Szenja hat das Abbild ihres Vaters geerbt, aber sie ist ein freundliches Wesen. Sie ist eine schöne, edel aussehende Eisbärin, die sich sehr gut mit ihrer Freundin Snowflake verträgt.

Wolodja is the new star of Tierpark Berlin

Wolodja says hello to Berlin

Meet Wolodja – the new kid in town. Almost two years old, he's the star attraction at Tierpark Berlin, which is also home to a young lady bear named Tonja. It is hoped that Wolodja and Tonja will someday fall in love, and produce cubs.

Treffen mit Wolodja - das neue Kind in der Stadt. Fast zwei Jahre alt,  ist  er der Star im Tierpark Berlin, der auch die Heimat einer jungen Eisbärdame namens  Tonja ist . Es bleibt zu  hoffen , dass Wolodja und Tonja eines Tages Gefallen an einander finden , und Nachwuchs produzieren .

Wolodja was born November 27, 2011 in Moscow. His mother is Simona and his father is the wild-born Vrangel, who came from Vrangel Island. Wolodja is therefore the brother of 11 year old Vera of of Nuremburg Tiergarten, and the uncle of Vera's children, Flocke, Gregor and Aleut.

Wolodja wurde  am 27. November 2011 in Moskau geboren . Seine Mutter ist Simona und sein Vater ist der in der  Wildnis  geborene Vrangel , der  von der Insel Vrangel kam. Wolodja ist daher der Bruder des 11-jährigen Vera von der Nürnberger Tiergarten, und der Onkel von Vera 's Kindern , Flocke, Gregor und Aleut.

This adorable little guy arrived at Tierpark Berlin on August 8, 2013, and stole the hearts of every visitor. I visited him on Thursday, August 29.

Dieser entzückende kleine Kerl kam nach Berlin in  den Tierpark Berlin am 8. August 2013, und stahl die Herzen eines jeden Besuchers. Ich besuchte ihn am Donnerstag 29. August 2013.

Wolodja can't decide -- inside or out.

I was a little disappointed that because Wolodja is such a star, the other bears, Tonja, and the older Aika and Troll, were not out. Tierpark Berlin has only the one enclosure, so the bears must be rotated for the public, and the other bears stay inside while Wolodja meets his fans. I have learned that Tonja and Wolodja were introduced to each other a few days ago, and are becoming friends. Now Wolodja will have a playmate.

Ich war ein wenig enttäuscht:Während Wolodja wie ein Star behandelt wird, waren die anderen Bären: Tonja, und die ältere Aika und Troll , nicht zu sehen.  Tierpark Berlin hat nur das eine Eisbärengehege, so dass die Bären immer im Wechsel  in die Öffentlichkeit  kommen, und somit   bleiben die anderen Bären im Inneren , während Wolodja seine Fans trifft .Ich habe nun gelernt, dass Tonja und Wolodja vor ein paar Tagen gemeinsam auf die Anlage kamen ,  und nun beginnen werden  Freunde zu werden. Jetzt  hat Wolodja einen Spielkameraden. Tonja ist fast vier Jahre alt. Und sie vertragen sich recht gut .

Wolodja does indeed know his name, and when the zookeeper calls, he comes running. He is a playful little bear, but the current philosophy of the old fashioned zoo director in Berlin forbids balls and other toys. The good news is that a new director has just been announced, and this policy will change next year, hopefully.

Wolodja kennet  schon  seinen Namen , und wenn die Tierpfleger rufen , kommt er gelaufen. Er ist ein verspielter kleiner Bär, aber die aktuelle Philosophie des altmodische Zoodirektor in Berlin verbietet Bälle und andere Spielsachen. Die gute Nachricht ist, dass ein neuer Direktor  gerade angekündigt wurde , und diese Politik wird sich ändern nächstes Jahr, hoffentlich..

There are two zoos in Berlin, sharing the same director. Zoo Berlin, or the Zoologischer Garten Berlin, the home of the famous late Knut, is the historical zoo of Berlin, but this is not where Wolodja lives. Wolodja's home, Tierpark Berlin, was built as a park for the residents of East Berlin during the time of the GDR, when the city and the country were divided. It has barely been changed since it was built in the early 1950s, and is harder to get to than the centrally located Berlin Zoo. However, it does have lots of space to work with.

Es gibt zwei Zoos in Berlin, die sich im selben Regisseur. Zoo Berlin, der Heimat des berühmten Knut spät, ist das historische Zoo von Berlin, aber das ist nicht, wo Wolodja Leben . Wolodja zu Hause, Tierpark Berlin, wurde als Park für die Bewohner von Ost-Berlin während der Zeit der DDR gebaut , als die Stadt und das Land geteilt wurden. Es hat sich kaum verändert , da es in den frühen 1950er Jahren gebaut wurde, und ist schwieriger zu erreichen als die zentral gelegenen Berlin Zoo. Allerdings hat es viel Platz zum arbeiten.

When the new director takes over the zoos, great changes and improvements are expected. And Wolodja will be there to see the new Tierpark Berlin grow up around him, and hopefully, he will get some fun toys to play with.

Wenn der neue Direktor über den Zoos dauert, sind große Veränderungen und Verbesserungen erwartet. Und Wolodja wird es sein zu sehen, der neue Tierpark Berlin aufwachsen um ihn herum, und hoffentlich wird er einige lustige Spielzeug um zu spielen.
