Aurora's twins make their debut

Auroras Zwillinge haben ihren ersten Auftritt

The day after her twin sister Anana brought her daughter out to the public, Aurora introduced her twin son and daughter to adoring fans at the Columbus Zoo. All three cubs were fathered by 29 year old Nanuq, a wildborn polar bear who is also the father of Luna in the Buffalo Zoo and Aurora's daughter last year, Nora. One year old Nora now lives in Portland Oregon.



Einen Tag nachdem ihre Schwester Anana ihre Tochter zum ersten Mal dem Publikum zeigte, stellte nun Aurora ihre Zwillinge, Sohn und Tochter den bewundernden Fans zur Schau im Columbus Zoo. Alle drei Kinder haben einen Vater, den 29 Jahre alten Nanuq, einem in der Wildnis geborenen Eisbären, der auch der Vater von Luna im Buffalo Zoo ist, und im letzten Jahr, seine Tochter Nora. Die nun ein Jahr alte Nora lebt jetzt im Zoo von Oregon.

Anana's daughter will be named in a contest sponsored by Kroger supermarkets. Aurora's twins will be named in a contest among zoo staff.


Ananas Tochter wird mit einem Namenswettbewerb ermittelt, gesponsert vom Kroger Supermarket, Auroras Zwillinge bekommen ihre Namen bei einem Wettbewerb zwischen den Zoomitarbeitern.

It is easy to tell the cubs apart, in my opinion. Little Brother is somewhat bigger than Little Sister, has a wider face, and a roly poly tummy. He is also more reluctant to jump into the pool. Sister is more daring when it comes to the water, but they both are very confident when paddling around the pool. While the zoo says they are about 75 pounds each, I would say that Little Brother weighs at least 5 pounds more than Little Sister.

Für mich ist ees einfach, die Jungtiere auseinander zu halten. Der kleine Bruder ist etwas größer als die kleine Schwester, hat ein breiteres Gesicht und einen drallen, runden Bauch. Ihm macht es auch viel mehr Spaß ins Wasser zu springen. Die Schwerster ist eher zurückhaltend am Wasserrand, aber beide waren sehr zufrieden im Pool zu schwimmen. Im Zoo sagt man die Zwillinge wären etwa gleich mit dem Gewicht von 75 pounds, aber ich denke, dass der kleine Bruder etwas mehr als 5 pounds wiegt, anders als die kleine Schwester.

When Mother Aurora caught one of the trout swimming in the pool, and brought it on shore, Little Brother stole it and ran away with it. Aurora gently retrieved it, and tried to share it with both cubs, but Little Brother stole it yet again. This time when Aurora took it back, she jumped into the water to eat it in peace.


Als Mama Aurora dann eine der Forellen fing und an Land brauchte, der kleine Bruder stahl sie und lief gleich mit der Forelle davon. Aurora nahm ihm die Beute wieder ab, und wollte es mit beiden Geschwistern teilen, aber der kleine Bruder stahl sie gleich wieder. Diesmal nahm Aurora es ihm wieder ab, tauchte ins Wasser um in Ruhe zu fressen.

Aurora dives deep, but the cubs stay near the surface.

Little Brother and Little Sister swim easily, but the girl is more adept at jumping into the pool, and standing up. She like to climb onto her mother's back when Aurora is swimming. At times, Little Brother would hang out on shore, and Mother Aurora would tempt him to jump into the water to play with a toy. 


Kleiner Bruder und Kleine Schwester sind gute Schwimmer, aber die kleine Schwester springt sehr gern ins Wasser und versucht zu stehen. Sie mag es auf dem Rücken von Aurora zu klettern während diese am Schwimmen ist. Manchmal ruht der kleine Bruder sich am Ufer aus, und Mama Aurora versucht ihn dann wieder ins Wasser zu springen um mit einem Spielzeug zu spielen.

As the days and weeks go by, they will gain confidence in diving deeper into the pool, and even chasing the fish.


Tage und Wochen werden vergehen und und sie werden mutiger werden auch tiefer in den Pool zu tauchen und vielleicht auch mal einen Fisch fangen.

This year there were only three cubs born in the USA, and those three were born in Columbus. Last year, it was just Nora and another cub named Hope, who was born in Toledo to Aurora and Anana's mother and father, Crystal and Marty.



In diesem Jahr gab es nur drei Jungtiergeburten in den USA, und diese drei wurden im Columbus Zoo geboren.Im letzten Jahr gab es nur Nora und ein weiteres Jungtier namens Hope, die im Toledo Zoo von Aurora zur Welt gebracht wurde, sowie von Ananas Mutter und Vater, Crystal und Marty.

At last, some happy news in the polar bear world, after sad news for the past month or two. The twin moms at the Columbus Zoo, Anana and Aurora, are ready to allow the world to meet their children.


Endlich ein paar gute Nachrichten in der Eisbären Welt nach den vielen traurigen Meldungen der letzten Monate. Die Zwillingsmütter Anana und Aurora waren bereit der Welt ihre Kinder zu zeigen.

Anana's cub was born November 8 and the twins were born November 14, 2016, so they are about five months old.


Ananas Jungtier kam am 8. November 2016 auf die Welt, Auroras Zwillinge am 14. November, somit sind sie ca.fünf Monate alt.

Proud daddy Nanuq is resting in back. He has been unwell for a few weeks, with possible allergies (runny nose) and arthritis, the problems of old age. He is rather elderly, and his keepers were worried, but they say he is feeling much better. He will be given the use of the outdoor area after closing hours.


Der stolze Vater Nanuq ruht sich in der Innenanlage aus. Er fühlte sich seit eingen Wochen gar nicht wohl, möglicherqweise sind es Allergien, er hatte eine ständig laufende Nase und ihn plagt die Arthritis, ein Alersproblem. Er ist schon recht alt, die Tierpfleger waren sehr besorgt, aber sie erzählten, dass er sich schon wieder viel besser fühlt. Und wenn die Besucher gegangen sind hat er die Aussenanlage für sich allein.

During the day, the mothers will alternate the use of the huge outdoor area. Today, it was Anana's turn to introduce her daughter to the public. 

Tomorrow, April 20, Aurora will show off her son and daughter. The good news is that mothers and cubs will be out all day. Last year when Nora met her fans, it was limited to one hour in the morning and there were long lines and disappointed fans. Now, it will be an all day event, one day Anana and her cub, and the next Aurora's family.


Während des Tages wechseln sich die Mütter mit Kindern auf der sehr großen, weitläufigen Anlage ab. Heute war Ananas Tag, sie durfte dem Publikum ihre Tochter präsentieren. 

Morgen wird dann Aurora ihren Sohn und ihre Tochter den Besuchern zeigen. Gute Nachrichten verkünden, dass Mütter und Kinder den ganzen Tag auf der Anlage zu sehen sein werden. Im letzten Jahr, als Nora ihre Fans traf war es auf eine Stunde am Morgen begrenzt, es gab sehr lange Warteschlangen und viele enttäuschte Besucher. Von nun an wird es täglich so sein-einen Tag mit Anana und ihrem Jungtier, den anderen Tag dann mit Aurora und ihrer kleinen Familie.

The cub needs a name

 The zoo announced the genders of the cubs with a tree lighting ceremony. The trees were decorated with pink and blue bulbs, and when they lit the trees, the gender of the cubs was revealed. A pink tree for Anana's cub, and one of each, pink and blue, for Aurora's twins.


Der Zoo gab die Geschlechter der Jungtiere mit einer Lichterbaum Zeremonie bekannt. Die Bäuchen waren mit pink und blauen Glühbirnen geschmückt, und als dann die Bäumen leuchteten wurde somit das Geschlecht der Jungtiere bekannt gegeben. Ein pink beleuchteter Baum für Ananas Jungtier,und für Auroras Jungtiere gab es jeweils einen Baum in pink und einen in blau.

The names for Aurora's twins will be selected in a contest among the zoo employees and volunteers. The name of Anana's daughter will be chosen in a contest sponsored by Kroger supermarket. 


Die Namen für Auroras Zwillinge werden bei einem Wettbewerb mit Zooangestellten und Voluntären veranstaltet. Der Name für Ananas Tochter wird auch mit einem Wettbewerb bestimmt, gesponsert von Krogers Supermarket.

The four names are Denali, Amelia Gray, Elisapee and Vieta. I am happy that there are three orignal unique names on the list. The only duplicate is Denali, for for Rizzo's brother Denali, who was born in Salt Lake City but lives in Japan. I think every bear deserves a unique name. you can go to the zoo's facebook page to find the link to vote every day for the name you like.


 Vier Namen stehen schon zur Auswahl: Denali, Amelia Gray, Elisapee und Vieta. Ich bin froh, dass drei sehr originelle Namen auf der Liste stehen. Nur Denali wäre schon vorhanden, es ist Rizzos Bruder Denali, der in Salt Lake City geboren wurde, nun aber in Japan lebt. Ich bin der Meinung, dass jeder Eisbär einen eigenen Namen haben sollte, man kann auf die Facebook Seite des Zoos gehen, um für den Namen zu abzustimmen, einmal pro Tag.

The little nameless one, whom I like to call Amelia, played all morning. She loves the big pool and plays endlessly with the yellow floating plastic toy. She also like to bite and wrestle with her mom. This little cub now weighs all of 75 pounds.


Die kleine namenlose, welche ich für mich Amelia benannt habe spielte den ganzen Morgen. Sie liebt den großen Pool und tobte endlos mit dem gelben schwimmenden Plastikspielzeug. Sie kann aber auch raufen und und ihre Mutter beissen. Dieses kleine Bärchen wiegt nun ungefähr 75 pounds.

Anana gives her daughter plenty of space. She trusts her, and knows she is safe. She usually watches the cub play from a distance, but sometimes joins her in swimming and fun.


Anana lässt ihrer Tochter auch viel Raum. Sie vertraut ihr und weiß, dass sie sicher ist. Sie beobachtet das Spielen ihrer Tochter aus der Entfernung,aber manchmal gesellt sie sich zum Schwimmer dazu und hat Spaß.

Tomorrow, the twins will be out. That should be fun too.


Morgen sind dann die Zwillinge auf der Anlage. Das wird auch Freude machen.

"Amelia" has a cute tongue

In fact if you want to see baby polar bears in the U.S.A., the only zoo with young ones born this year is the Columbus Zoo. So I am very fortunate that this zoo is close to me.


Fakt ist - wer Eisbärenjungtiere in den USA sehen möchte, der einzige Zoo mit Jungtieren in diesem Jahr ist der Columbus Zoo. Somit kann ich mich glücklich schätzen, so nahe beim Zoo  wohnen zu können.

Szenja, a grand German-born lady, leaves us much too soon

Another of our great polar bears is gone. After a short illness, 21 year old Szenja of SeaWorld San Diego has died. We have lost so many of our lovely bears in only the last two months. No cause of death has been found as yet.

Ein weiterer unserer großartigenEisbären ist von uns gegangen. Nach sehr kurzer Krankheit ist die 21 Jahre alte Szenja gestorben. Während der letzten zwei Monate haben wir so viele unserer wunderbaren Eisbären verloren.Und bislang ist keine Todesursache bekannt.

She was born in Wuppertal Zoo in Germany in 1995 and came to San Diego SeaWorld two years later.

Sie kam im Zoo Wupperthal in Deutschland 1995 zur Welt und zwei Jahre später reiste sie dann in die SeaWorld in San Diego, USA.

 Szenja inherited her magnificent head and bold facial features from her father, the famous Boris. Szenja's brother Troll lived in Berlin, and he died several years ago. Here sister Candy lives in Sapporo, Japan.

Szenja erbte den fantastischen Kopf und den kessen Gesichtsausdruck ihrers Vaters, dem gerühmten Boris. Szenja Bruder Troll lebte in Berlin, er verstarb vor einigen Jahren. Ihre Schwester Candy lebt in Sapporo, Japan.

Szenja's longtime SeaWorld companion Snowflake had left in late February for Pittsburgh, and Szenja was alone, but she didn't mind. Polar bears are naturally loners. Szenja and Snowflake had been separated off and on, over the years.

Szenjas langjährige Begleiterin Snowflake verließ sie im letzten Februar und kam nach Pittsburgh, nun war Szenja allein, aber das machte ihr nichts aus.Eisbären sind auch in der Natur häufig auf sich gestellt.Während ihrer gemeinsamen Zeit waren sie des öffteren mal getrennt.

She found things to do. Keepers gave her a yellow plastic doll, which she carried around. 

Sie konnte sich gut selbst geschäftigen. Die Tierpfleger gaben ihr eine gelbe Plastikpuppe, die sie dann herum trug.

The keepers threw balls of cream cheese, her favorite, at the window and she gladly licked it off. 

Die Tierpfleger waren Bälle mit Käsecreme an die Scheiben, eine ihrer Leibspeisen, und sie leckte alles sauber auf.

The keepers would give the bears toys that had been played with by whales, dolphins, sea lions and seals, to make them smell interesting.

Szenja's keepers gave her various toys that had been steeped in the water of the seal enclosure, just to keep life interesting.

Szenjas Tierpfleger gaben ihr auch verschiedene Spielsachen, die sie im tiefen Pool der Robbenanlage versenkten, nur um das Leben dort interessant zu gestalten.

Sometimes they put live trout in the water, just to keep things interesting.


Manchmal gab es auch lebende Forellen im Wasser um sie zu beschäftigen.

Szenja was very good at being alone. Even when Snowflake was around, they mostly ignored each other, one of the keepers told me, except during breeding season, when they would play together a little bit, and be friendlier.


Szenja konnte sehr gut auch allein sein. Auch als Snowflake noch auf der Anlage lebte ignorierten sie sich häufig, ein Pfleger erzählte dass nur zur Paarungszeit sie etwas freundlicher und umgänglicher wurden.

Senja Stepping Out

 In the past two months, we have lost so many beautiful bears. I have been crying tears for Fritz, Tips, Rizzo, Yoghi, the old lady Uulu, and now Szenja. 


Während der vergangenen zwei Monate haben wir so viele wunderbare Eisbären verloren. Ich habe Tränen geweint um Fritz, Tips, Rizzo, Yoghi, die alte Dame Uulu und nun auch Szenja.

I had thought Szenja would be there for my next visit to San Diego. I loved to visit her, for she was always interesting, always fun to watch, even when she napped. It is hard to believe she is really gone.


Ich hatte gedacht auch bei meinem nächsten Besuch in San Diego Szenja wieder zu sehen. Ich habe den Besuch bei ihr sehr benossen, es war immer sehr interessant, machte Freude sie zu beobachten, auch wenn sie ein Schläfchen machte. Es ist schwer zu begreifen dass sie nun wirklich fort ist.
