Farewell to Zero

Zero

We have lost a legendary bear. Zero, who had just turned 26 years old in December, was suffering from lymphoma, and was released from his pain on January 10. His health and energy had been declining for several weeks.

 Zero had lived at the Rocky Coast at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, New York, with the shy Aurora, a 26 year old lady bear. Aurora has had cubs, but they were not with Zero.

 Zero was known for his big personality and playful nature. He loved to interact with his visitors, splash around with his toys, swim laps in front of the viewing window, and take naps outside so everyone could watch him. He also loved sitting under the pounding waterfalls of the Rocky Coasts.

Aurora, on the other had, is happy to spend her time inside unless the keepers put out some food so it is a rare opportunity to see her. Zero was the big attraction at the Rocky Coast.

Clever Zero

 Zero, who was born to Mishka (sister of Patches and Bam Bam) in the Milwaukee Zoo on December 14, 1989, gained worldwide fame for his adventure when, while playing with a toy, he fell into a safety net in an 18 foot deep moat in his enclosure in the Milwaukee County Zoo in October of 2008. He stayed down in the moat for 18 days this time, and garnered worldwide attention, as many sent in suggestions as to how to lure him out of the moat. There were daily news stories on Zero and his status. Zero had done the same thing some years earlier, when he took a week to climb the stairs out of the moat.

 This time, even though zookeepers had given him half rations of food in the hopes of luring him out because of hunger, Zero showed no interest in leaving the moat, the zookeepers finally had to anesthetize him and lift him out with a crane.

Zero, who was named Zero because of the outside temperature on the day he was born, moved to the Seneca Park Zoo in January of 2010, after four years of living with Snow Lilly in Milwaukee and producing no cubs. Snow Lilly had kind of given Zero the cold shoulder, and there was really no romance there. It was hoped that Aurora in the Seneca Park Zoo would find Zero more attractive, and produce cubs, but that did not happen. In 2012, Zero and Aurora were part of a groundbreaking Artificial Insemination experiment, but that did not produce cubs either.

Zero was part of the Olaf and Olga family, whose line is dying out in this country. Olaf and Olga, Mishka's parents, raised seven cubs at the Omaha Zoo (only Bam Bam still survives), and have many descendants in Europe. Zero's uncle Omaha was the father of Olink of Rotterdam, Netherlands, who has eight cubs. In the USA, Zero's uncle Shep was the grandfather of Berlin of the Kansas City Zoo (no cubs). Zero was also the uncle of Berit of the Cincinnati Zoo (no cubs).

2013 was the year we met some wonderful polar bear cubs, but we also lost some great legends in the polar bear world. Here are the cubs who made their debut in zoos in the U.S.A and in Europe.

Luna and Kali

In the United States, we were happy to welcome Luna to the world in December of 2012. She is the daughter of Luna and Nanuq and was born November 27, in the Buffalo Zoo, where she was soon the only polar bear in the zoo. Her father Nanuq went to live in the Columbus Zoo, and her mother Anana did not take care of her daughter, and was sent to live in the Brookfield Zoo. The Buffalo Zoo had plans to tear down the old bear pits and build a wonderful new polar bear habitat, The Arctic Edge. One of the keepers raised Luna, and when the cub was old enough, she made her public debut.

A few months later, she was joined by Kali, a wildborn cub whose mother had been shot by a hunter in Alaska. Kali spent several months in the Alaska Zoo and then flew to Buffalo where he joined Luna in play. The cubs are a very popular pair at the zoo, and they have helped with fund raising for the new polar bear exhibit too.

The Toledo Zoo also had cubs in their fantastic polar bear home, the Arctic Encounter. Suka and Sakari were born in November 21, 2012 to Crystal and Marty. Suka is a girl, and Sakari is a boy.

In Denmark, Ilka had twins November 21, 2012. at the Skandinavisk Dyrepark in Kolind, Denmark. Still unnamed. I think one is a boy and one is a girl, but there is no official word. Here they have plenty of room to roam.  You can watch them on the Wild Earth webcam.

Nanuk and Kometa

Cora had twins in Brno Zoo in Czech Republic on November 24, 2012 and we could watch them grow up on a dencam. Nanuk is the boy and Kometa, named for the city's soccer team, is a girl. They are famous on Facebook for their many fun photos with balls, traffic cones and other toys.

Giovana's parents in Fasano Italy also had a cub on December 24, 2012, but I have no other information on this cub, who would be a year old now.

This current birthing season we have heard about two events in Germany: Giovanna and Yoghi in Munich and their new twins, and Lloyd and Valeska in Bremerhaven with a cub. Aurora in Toronto, Canada, has given birth, and the surviving cub, named Remy, is being handraised. There is also a cub born and doing well in Talinn, Estonia.

We have not had news of any cubs born in U.S. zoos this winter so far, but sometimes zoos do not make that announcement until the cubs are older.

This year, US zoos have lost eight beloved bears. At the end of 2013, we now have only 59 polar bears in American zoos. This includes three cubs from last winter, and rescued Kali.

Alaska
Alaska, a "retired" circus bear, died in the Baltimore Zoo on January 15. Born in the wild in 1985, she was four years old when she was captured and sold into the circus. She was the first of seven bears rescued from the Suarez Mexican Circus in 2002. Alaska was 27 years old when she died, having enjoyed over ten years of "retirement." Sadly, I did not get around to visiting Alaska and some of these other special bears before we lost them.

Arki of the Brookfield Zoo, and later Louisville

Arki, who was born and spent most of her life in the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, died May 16 in the Louisville Zoo. She was 28 years old. Arki was the mother of Marty, Hudson and Peyton, and grandmother to Nikita, Aurora and Anana, Siku, Suka and Sakari. She was known for her special “dance” and for her love of lettuce.

30 year old Aurora died August 13 in the Cleveland Zoo in Ohio. She was the granddaughter of the well known pair Olaf and Olga of the Omaha Zoo.

Gus

Gus died August 28, 2013 in the Central Park Zoo in New York City, where he spent most of his life. He was born December 10, 1985 in Toledo. He was known for his quirky personality, and his neurosis. He swam laps constantly. The zoo brought in a therapist, who recommended enrichment activities and toys, and it seemed to help. Gus had two lady companions, Lily and Ida, and he outlived both of them. He was an icon of the Central Park Zoo and it is estimated that over 20 million people visited him during his lifetime. He was 27.

Another well loved bear, Aquila, died suddenly on September 10, at the young age of 21. He had returned from the Detroit Zoo to his home in the North Carolina Zoo in April, after part of the enclosure renovations were completed. and his fans were so happy to have this playful bear back home. He died from a ruptured stomach. He had had stomach problems throughout his life, and had gone through several surgeries to correct deformities.

Eine weitere beliebte Bär, Aquila, starb plötzlich am 10. September im jungen Alter von 21 Jahren. Er kam aus dem Detroit Zoo zu seinem *Zuhause* in den North Carolina Zoo im April zurück, nachdem ein Teil der Renovierungen an der Eisbärenanlage abgeschlossen wurden. und seine Fans waren so glücklich, diese verspielten Bären zurück nach Hause haben. Klondike – Sea World

Aquila's nephew Klondike, age 18, died suddenly on September 12 in his enclosure at Sea World in Florida.

The famous twins Klondike and Snow were born November 6, 1994, to the sister of Aquila, Uli, in the Denver Zoo. She did not take care of her babies, so the cubs were raised by zookeepers. The cubs moved to Sea World in Orlando Florida in November of 1995, where they happily lived together until Snow was moved to Arizona in 2012 in hopes that it would help her skin allergies. Snow died in Reid Park Zoo in Arizona last year at age 17.

Wilhelm

The famous Wilhelm also know as Willie or Willy, died October 22 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a retired circus bear, one of those bears rescued in 2002 from the Suarez Bros. Circus from Mexico, when the bears were in Puerto Rico and under control of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Wilhelm was born in Copenhagen, but was sold into the circus in Germany at a young age. He and Masha, another of the circus bears came to the North Carolina Zoo, where Willy became a star. Masha died in 2007.

Der berühmte Wilhelm, auch Willie oder Willy genannt, starb am 22. Oktober in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Er war ein ehemaliger Zirkusbär, einer dieser Bären im Jahr 2002 vom Suarez Bros. Willy's photos have been featured in newspapers around the world. In 2011, when the North Carolina Zoo decided to make renovations in their enclosure, Wilhelm was moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo, and Aquila spent two years in the Detroit Zoo with another retired circus bear, Bärle, who had been rescued with Willy.

Elvis has left the building

We lost Elvis, who had been born in the USA in Memphis, but spent most of his life in Germany. He died June 8 in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM at the age of 33 years old. He is well known as the father of Tips and Taps, the Chocolate bear hybrids, born in Osnabruck Zoo in January of 2004.

Wir verloren Elvis, der in den USA in Memphis geboren war, er verbrachte aber den größten Teil seines Lebens in Deutschland. Er starb am 8. Juni in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM im Alter von 33 Jahre alt. We also said goodbye to Churchill, patriarch of Rostock Zoo, where he fathered many cubs. He died October 26. Churchill was born in Rostock on November 28, 1979 and spent most of his life there.

Churchill was the father of Boris, the only remaining member of the infamous Suarez Circus polar bears. Boris, rescued with the other six circus bears in 2002, is now happily retired in the Point Defiance Zoo in Washington state.

We miss Miss Augo

But the saddest loss of all was when little Augo fell and shattered her front legs, and we had to say goodbye to her. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, last May 4, and she was playing and went over the edge of a trench. She was a bright star at Aalborg Zoo in Denmark. Augo was only a little more than two years old, and many hearts were broken when she died. Augo was thought to be a boy all her life, and only after she died did we learn that she was a funny little girl.

Aber der traurigste Verlust von allem war, als Augo so unglücklich abstürtze und sich beide Vorderbeine brach, wir mussten uns verabschieden, sie mußte erlöst werden. Es war ein schöner Samstagnachmittag im Mai 4, und sie spielte und sprang über den Rand eines Grabens. Sie war ein heller Stern im Zoo von Aalborg in Dänemark. We will miss all the wonderful bears we have lost this year. It has been a time of great loss in the polar bear world, but are glad that we knew these special bears.

Wir werden all die schönen Eisbären,die wir in diesem Jahr verloren haben sehr vermissen. Es war eine Zeit großer Verluste in der Eisbären Welt, wir sind aber auch dankbar, dass wir diese speziellen Eisbären kennen gelernt haben.

Sweet Lady Patches is the Queen of the Erie Zoo. She is going to be 26 years old on November 29.

For the past few years, she has enjoyed the use of two enclosures, using the old polar bear enclosure plus sometimes being rotated into the corner spot. She loved sitting on the corner, watching the visitors go by. She is a “People Watcher.”

Während der letzten Jahren hat sie die Verwendung von zwei Bärengehegen genossen, mit dem alten Eisbärengehege und manchmal durch Umzug in die Ecke des anderen Bärengeheges. Sie liebte es, an der Ecke zu sitzen und beobachtete die Besucher beim  Vorbeigehen. Sie ist ein "People Watcher."

But now the black bears from the Akron Zoo have taken over the corner enclosure, and Patches has only the one place with a small pool and a silly useless slide. 

Aber jetzt haben die schwarzen Bären aus dem Zoo Akron  das Eck - Gehege übernommen und Patches hat nur dies eine Gehege mit einem kleinen Pool und einer nutzlosen Stein- Rutsche.

 Still, she has a great attitude. She enjoys the playful games with her keepers. She watches her visitors. She enjoys the small pleasures of life, such as a frozen ring of sardines to play with and other enrichment treats.

Dennoch hat sie eine tolle Einstellung . Sie genießt die verspielten Spiele mit ihrem Tierpflger. Sie beobachtet ihre Besucher . Sie genießt die kleinen Freuden des Lebens , wie zum Beispiel mit einem gefrorenen Ring aus Sardinen zu spielen und weitere Anreicherung  mit Leckerbissen.

Patches looks fantastic. Her fur is clean and fluffy, and she isn't plagued with the scabs caused by biting flies two years ago. She still likes to scratch on various corners. She has a cool pool and air conditioned quarters to beat the heat.

Patches sieht fantastisch aus. Ihr Fell ist sauber und flauschig , und sie ist nicht mit den Schorf von Stechfliegen behaftet,welches sie vor  zwei Jahren  sehr geplagt hat . Sie kratzt sich immer noch gerne an verschiedenen Stellen. Sie hat einen kühlen Pool und  ein klimatisiertes  Quartier während der Sommerhitze.

Her pool is small, but the water is clean. Patches enjoys the daily hosing down of her enclosure, playing in the spray. I think the Erie zookeepers make a game of it.

Patches' sister Bab Bam at the Omaha Zoo

Patches came to the Erie Zoo December 11, 2007 from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, where she lived with her twin sister Bam Bam (officially called Fanny, but everyone calls her Bam Bam). She was 20 at the time, and had lived her entire life with her sister at the zoo in Omaha. She had previously given birth to a cub at the Henry Doorly Zoo, but it did not survive. There were expectations that she would become a mother after the move, but it just never did happen. And now she is alone.

Patches kam in den Erie Zoo 11. Dezember 2007 von der Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, wo sie mit ihrer Zwillingsschwester  Bam Bam lebte (offiziell genannt Fanny, aber jeder nennt sie Bam Bam). Sie war 20 Jahre alt zu der Zeit, und lebte ihr ganzes Leben mit ihrer Schwester in den Zoo in Omaha. Sie hatte zuvor  ein Junges im Henry Doorly Zoo geboren, aber es hat nicht überlebt. Man hatte  die Erwartungen, dass sie Mutter werden würde nach dem Umzug, aber es  ist nie passieren. Und jetzt ist sie allein.

At the time Patches arrived, the Erie Zoo had just lost Alcor, one of twin brothers, and only Mizar, age 9, was left. It was hoped that Mizar and Patches could have a family. Unhappily, Mizar died a few months later of a ruptured spleen.

Zu der Zeit ,alsbPatches ankam hatte der Erie Zoo nur Alcor, einen der Zwillingsbrüder verloren und  Mizar, 9 Jahre,  war übrig  . Man hoffte, dass Mizar und Patches eine Familie  gründen könnte . Unglücklicherweise starb Mizar ein paar Monate später an einem geplatzten Milz.

Later that year, Norton arrived on loan from the Detroit Zoo. The staff at the Detroit Zoo loved Norton, and hated to see him go. Patches did become pregnant, and in the winter of 2009, Patches gave birth to a stillborn cub. Norton, at age 23, died in early September, 2010, from a hernia, a tear in the abdominal wall. He had lived at the Erie Zoo for two years. Again, the Erie Zoo had hoped that Patches would give the following winter, but that just didn't happen.

Später in diesem Jahr, kam Norton Leihgabe der Detroit Zoo. Das Personal an der Detroit Zoo geliebt Norton, und hasste ihn gehen zu sehen. Patches haben schwanger zu werden, und im Winter des Jahres 2009, gab Patches Geburt ein totes Jungtier. Norton, im Alter von 23, starb Anfang September 2010, von einer Hernie, ein Riss in der Bauchdecke. Er hatte am Erie Zoo für zwei Jahre lebte. Wieder hatte der Erie Zoo gehofft, dass Patches ein Junges haben würde im folgenden Winter, aber das ist einfach nicht passiert.

Patches and Bam Bam are the only bears still living of the seven cubs raised by the famous breeding pair Olaf and Olga of the Omaha Zoo. Their older sister Mishka died this past May at the Henry Villas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

Patches und Bam Bam sind die einzigen noch lebenden  der sieben Jungen  des berühmten Zuchtpaares Olaf und Olga  aus dem  Omaha Zoo . Ihre ältere Schwester Mischka starb im vergangenen Mai im Henry Villas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Erie Zoo is a small but beautiful zoo, cut through by a river chasm. Here you will find architectural wonders as homes for some of the animals.

The polar bear enclosure is old fashioned, and really should be upgraded, but the zoo in general is a treasure for this community, although it is closed for several months in the winter, because Erie gets so much lake effect snow. It is open March through November, and closed for December, January and February.

 Die Eisbärenanlage ist altmodisch, und sollte wirklich aufgerüstet werden, aber der Zoo im Allgemeinen ist ein Schatz für diese Gemeinschaft, obwohl sie für mehrere Monate im Winter geschlossen ist, weil Erie bekommt so vielSchnee;bedingt durch den Effekt des Sees. Es ist geöffnet von März bis November, und schloss für Dezember, Januar und Februar.
