Harambe's loss a senseless tragedy

Harambe had a real majesty about him

 You just had to fall in love with him, with his beautiful
heart-shaped nose, his stern look, his wry sense of humor. He was the most handsome gorilla I have ever seen in all my travels. Harambe was a favorite resident of the Cincinnati Zoo. 

Man musste sich einfach in ihn verlieben, mit seiner schönen, herzförmigen Nase, seinem strengen Blick, seine Art von trockenem Humor. Er war der schönste Gorilla, den ich jemals auf meinen unzähligen, so vielen Zooreisen gesehen habe. Harambe war ein sehr beliebter Bewohner des Zoo in Cincinnati.

Harambe was an intelligent guy. He was always thinking.

After what happened last Saturday, he is gone now, and I don't know if the zoo will ever be the same.

Nach dem Vorfall am letzten Samstag ist er nun fort,und ich weiß nicht ob der Zoo jemals wieder so sein kann wie es bislang war.

He had just turned 17 years old the day before. This big fellow was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas, where he was a beloved favorite also. He had just arrived at the Cincinnati Zoo a year ago to meet a couple of lady gorillas and form a new family. He quickly gained many friends and fans here with his silly tricks, his swagger, his big personality. He was one of a kind.

Er war gerade einen Tag zuvor 17 Jahre alt geworden. Dieser große Kerl wurde im Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas geboren, wo er auch ein sehr beliebter Favorite war. Erst vor einem Jahr wurde er im Zoo von  Cincinnati mit einigen Gorillaweibchen zusammen gebracht um eine neue Familie zu gründen. Er fand sehr schnell viele Fans und Freunde für seine törichten Tricks, seiner Prahlerei, seiner großartigen Persönlichkeit. Er war etwas ganz Besonderes.

And you just never knew what he was going to do. He often would explode in a rapid run across the yard with no warning, and splash all the visitors with the water from the stream. He loved being king of his domain, and he loved his fans, obviously showing off and posing for the adoring photographers.

Und was konnte nie sicher sein was er als Nächstes tun würde. Ohne Vorwarnung rannte er wie wild über die Anlage und bespritzte die Besucher mit dem Wasser aus dem Bach.
Er war der König über sein Reich, er mochte seine Bewunderer, und posierte gerne vor den vielen Kameras.

Harambe was a very good looking gorilla

Last Saturday, because of a curious and unsupervised child, Harambe's life was ended. It should never have happened.

Am vergangenen Samstag wegen eines neugierigen und unbeaufsichtigten Kind wurde Harambe Leben endete. Es sollte nie geschehen.

When the boy fell into the stream in the moat, after climbing under, over and through three levels of barriers, the keepers called the gorillas inside. The two girls obeyed, but curious Harambe went to the stunned boy's side, helped him out of the water, and appeared to be protecting him as he would a young gorilla boy.

Als das Kind in den Kanal in den Graben fiel musste er vorher drüber, drunter und durch, das waren drei Stufen von Barrieren, klettern, da riefen die Tierpfleger die Tiere nach innen. Die Weibchen gehorchten und reagierten, aber der neugierige Harambe ging zu dem verdutzten Kleinkind, half ihm aus dem Wasser heraus, es sah aus als wollte er ihn geschützen, so wie er es bei einem Jungtier tun würde.

Gorillas are usually nurturing and gentle. When a 3 year old child fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Brookfield Zoo 20 years ago, the gorilla protected the child, and no harm came to anyone. Koko the Gorilla is famous for her love and care for her kitten.

Gorillas sind in der Regel fürsorglich und sanft. Als ein dreijähriges Kleinkind vor 20 Jahren in das Gehege vom Brookfield Zoo fiel hat der Gorilla es beschützt und niemand kam zu Schaden. Koko der Gorilla war bekannt für ihre liebevolle Pflege sein Kätzchen.

The boy was in Harambe's care for 10 minutes, and he didn't harm him. Harambe pulled him through the water, as he would a gorilla child. But Harambe was over 400 pounds and perhaps did not know his own strength.

Der Junge war ca.10 Minuten in der Obhut von Harambe und es wurde ihm kein Leid zugefügt. Der Gorilla zog das Kind durch das Wasser, so wie er es mit einem Jungtier tun würde. Aber Harambe wiegt über 400 Pfund und kann seine Kraft wohl nicht einschätzen.

Cincinnati Zoo officials felt they could take no chances. If they had tried to use a tranquilizer dart, it could disturb Harambe, who was already confused over this event. If Harambe had tried to climb out of the moat, he might have dropped the boy. 

Die verantwortlichen Beamten vom Cincinnati Zoo konnten kein Risiko eingehen. Wenn sie einen Betäubungspfeil versucht hätten zu platzieren hätte dies Harambe verstört haben, der schon durch das Ereignis verwirrt war. Sollte Harambe versuchen aus den Wassergraben zu klettern hätte er den Jungen fallen gelassen.

The keepers tried to trade food for the boy. They tried calling to him. Harambe was not going to give the boy up. The zoo staff felt they were running out of options. Harambe was also very quick and unpredictable, just by his very nature. He could have unintentionally hurt the boy, even though he was trying to help.

 Sie bemühten Fressen zum Tausch für das Kind zu erhandeln, sie riefen seinen Namen, aber er wollte das Kind nicht gehen lassen.  Nun hatten die Zoo- Mitarbeiter all ihre Optionen ausgetestet, Harambe war schnell und unberechenbar, bedingt durch seine eigene Natur. Er hätte versehentlich das Kind verletzen können, obgleich er zu helfen versuchte.

As a human enterprise, the zoo's top priority is to protect the safety of people, no matter how unfair it is. Their decision to kill their beloved Gorilla was based on protecting the boy, as it had to be. That is just the reality of it. They made the only decision they could, in their eyes. And yes, it is unfair since Harambe was not responsible for causing this nightmare of a situation. The blame lies with the irresponsible visitors. The reality also is that the zoo staff must consider liability, and the future of the zoo. And it is all totally unfair.

Als menschliches Unternehmen, die oberste Priorität der Zoo ist es, die Sicherheit der Menschen zu schützen, egal, wie unfair es ist. Ihre Entscheidung, ihren geliebten Gorilla zu töten, basierend darauf, den Jungen zu schützen, wie es dann sein musste. Das ist nur die Realität davon. Sie machten die einzige Entscheidung, in ihren Augen die sie machen konnten.  Und ja, es ist unfair, da Harambe für die Entstehung dieses Alptraum in so einer Situation nicht verantwortlich war. Die Schuld liegt bei den unverantwortlich Besuchern. Die Realität ist auch, dass die Zooleitung Haftung berücksichtigen müssen, und die Zukunft des Zoos. Und es ist alles total unfair.

To look at the big picture, the human race is overpopulating and overdeveloping the planet, with its limited resources, causing the climate to change, the sea to fill with plastic and bleached coral, the natural world to shrink. Just about every large mammal is on the endangered list. Some are almost extinct because of human causes. A hundred years ago Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon on earth, died at the Cincinnati Zoo. A species of bird that once darkened the skies was destroyed in just a few years by human greed, never to return. 

Um auf das große Bild zu sehen, ist die menschliche Rasse übervölkert und den Planeten überansprucht mit seinen begrenzten Ressourcen, wodurch das Klima sich verändert, das Meer mit Plastikmüll überflutet wird füllen und Korallenbänke verbleichen, die natürliche Welt beginnt zu schrumpfen. Fast jedes große Säugetier steht auf der gefährdeten Liste. Einige sind fast ausgestorben, mit menschlichen Ursachen. Vor hundert Jahren verstarb Martha, die letzte Passagier-Taube auf der Erde, sie starb im Zoo von Cincinnati. Eine Vogelarten, die einst den Himmel verdunkelte wurde in nur wenigen Jahren durch menschliche Gier zerstört, sie wird nie wieder zurückzukehren.

 He especially enjoyed splashing water from the stream at his visitors.

Harambe, who was a Western Lowland Gorilla, was a magnificent and intelligent individual whose loss is enormous. He is being mourned by the gorilla keepers and his many fans and friends as a valued individual, but also as a symbol of our losing the best of the natural world. We mourn for Harambe. It should never have happened. We need to make sure it never happens again.

Harambe,  ein Western Lowland Gorilla , war eine großartige und intelligente Persönlichkeit, sein Verlust ist enorm. Er wird von den Gorilla Pflegern  und seine vielen Fans und Freunden als geschätztes Individium betrauert, ebenso aber  auch als ein Symbol, das Beste aus der natürlichen Welt zu verlieren. Wir trauern um Harambe. Es sollte nie geschehen. Wir müssen sicherstellen, dass es nie wieder passiert.

A new baby gorilla for the Cincinnati Zoo

(Update: The Zoo has announced that Mondika is a girl. So she will be called Mona.)

Tuesday was a big day for 8 day old Mondika, the new baby Western Lowland Gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo. This was the day Mondika was introduced to an adoring public.

Dienstag war ein großer Tag für die 8 Tage alten Mondika, das neue Baby Tiefland - Gorilla im Zoo von Cincinnati. Dies war der Tag, an dem Mondika einem bewundernden Publikum vorgestellt wurde.

Asha is a first time mother, but is doing great

When the baby was born inside the gorilla living quarters, and in the days after, all the gorilla family was present. This is how it is done in the jungle. The baby is part of an extended family, including little one year old Gladys.

Als das Baby in der Gorillaanlage geboren wurde, und auch in den Tagen danach, war die ganze Gorillafamilie anwesend. Dies ist so, wie es auch im Dschungel gemacht wird. Das Baby ist Teil einer Großfamilie, darunter ebenso die ein Jahr alte Gladys.

Parents Asha and Jomo both belong to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas, and the baby, while it will continue to live at the Cincinnati Zoo, belongs to the Gladys Porter Zoo as well.

Eltern Asha und Jomo gehören beide zum Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas, und auch das Jungtier, während es weiterhin im Cincinnati Zoo lebt, gehört dem Gladys Porter Zoo ebenso.

The Cincinnati Zoo made history last year by taking in newborn Gladys, who had been rejected by her mother at the Gladys Porter Zoo, and was raised first by keepers, and then by a surrogate Gorilla mother, M'Linzi. During Tuesdays big event, Gladys ignored everyone else, and continued to play and have fun on her own.

Der Zoo von Cincinnati machte Geschichte im letzten Jahr durch die Aufnahme von Neugeborenen Gladys, die von ihrer Mutter im Gladys Porter Zoo abgelehnt worden war, und wurde zuerst durch Tierpfleger versorgt und dann durch ein Gorillapflegemutter M'Linzi übernommen. Während am Dienstag alles ein große Ereignis war, ignoriert Gladys das Gescehen, und fuhr fort, zu spielen und Spaß zu haben auf eigenen Beinen.

Asha caries the baby low, and Mondika has to climb up to find her dinner.
 For the first 10 days, the keepers did not check to see whether it is a girl or a boy.
  They didn't  want to disturb the mother.

Looking for lunch

11 year old Asha carries her baby around quite low, instead of cradling the infant in her arms. She is a first time mother, and sometimes holds the baby in awkward positions. But she will learn.

11-jährige Asha trägt ihr Baby ziemlich niedrig herum, statt das Kind in ihren Armen zu wiegen. Sie ist zum ersten Mal Mutter, und manchmal hält sie das Baby inungünstigen Positionen. Aber sie wird es lernen.

Asha gave birth to her 5 pound baby on August 4. This tiny one is the 49^th Gorilla born at the Cincinnati Zoo, but it is the first born in nearly 8 years.

There are about 765 gorillas in zoos worldwide. Western Lowland gorillas are critically endangered in the wild, with less than 175,000 of the species.
