Flocke and Hope get some surprises!

Flocke und Hope erhalten einige erstaunlichen Überraschungen!

Flocke and her two year old daughter Hope were treated to a show outside their ice cave recently, and the bears were fascinated. 

Polar Bear enrichment comes in many forms. After all, polar bears are made for a changing environment, and they need new toys, new foods, new routines, to keep life interesting.

Eisbären Unterhaltung kommt auf vielfältige Weise. Überhaupt, Eisbären durchleben eine Vielzahl an Veränderungen ihres Daseins und sie brauchen ständig neues Spielzeug,anderes Fressen,Neues in der täglichen Routine damit der Tagesablauf weiterhin  für sie spannend bleibt.

What is this? Flocke is so curious.

One day not long ago, Flocke and Hope enjoyed watching a business convention set up outside their enclosure at Marineland in France, and our bears had quite a show.

Vor einigen Tagen, es war nicht lange her, Flocke und Hope hatten Spaß den Aufbau einer Veranstaltung oder Handelsshow ausserhalb ihrer Anlage in Marineland zu beobachten.und die Bären bekamen wahrlich eine unterhaltsame Show zu sehen.

Flocke first noticed some people setting up a tall flag right outside their snow grotto.

Flocke bemerkte, dass eine riesige Fahne direkt ausserhalb ihrer Schneehöhle errichtet wurde.

Flocke and Hope were fascinated as these rippling pieces of cloth were attached to the poles.

Flocke und Hope waren fasziniert von diesen sich bewegenden Stoffstücken, die an den Masten befestigt wurden.

She has never seen anything like this.

The banner moves over to the tent, and Flocke keeps track.

The flags were moved to other spots nearby. One flag flew right above their enclosure, and little Hope ran back and forth in wonder at this new thing in the sky. She cried and moaned and asked her mother what it was.

Die Fahnen wurden auch an anderen Stellen ganz in der Nähe montiert. Eine der Fahnen wehte direkt über die Anlage und die kleine Hope rannte hin und her, erstaunt über dieses neue Ding am Himmel. Sie schrie und jammerte und fragte ihre Mutter, was das denn sein könnte. Hope war aufgeregt, ängstlich und neugierig-alles auf einmal.

Something new and exciting.

Then someone walked by carrying some red balloons. Flocke was fascinated. She excitedly followed the balloons and they trailed along.

Dann ging jemand vorbei und hatte einige rote Ballons an der Hand. Flocke war fasziniert. Aufgeregt folgte sie den Ballons und sie wanderten weiter.

There were many visitors during the next few days. Flocke and Hope were gracious hostesses to the visitors.

Während der nächsten Tage waren sehr viele Besucher dort. Flocke und Hope waren freundliche Gastgeber für die Besucher.

Here comes the strange red lady with the fancy hair.

They even got a very special visitor, a queen perhaps ? She was very tall, wearing red, and had a tall white wig. Flocke and Hope had never had a visitor like her, even taller than a standing polar bear.

Sie hatten auch noch einen besonderen Gast, vielleicht eine Königin? Sie war sehr groß, trug rote Kleidung und hatte eine lange weiße Perücke. Flocke und Hope hatten noch niemals zuvor so einen Besucher gesehen, auch so viel größer als ein stehender Eisbär.

And the bears admired the strange visitor.

The red queen was fascinated with Hope and Flocke, and even took out her phone to take a "selfie" to show all her royal friends.

Die rote Königin war auch fasziniert von Hope und Flocke und nahm sogar ihr Handy um ein Selfie zu machen, das sie dann ihren königlichen Freunden zeigen würde.

As for Flocke and Hope, they were thrilled to see this tall red visitor. She was a grand lady.

Also für Flocke und Hope war der Besuch dieser großen Besucherin sehr aufregend. Sie war eine grossartige Lady.

Raspi was not left out. He had a balloon penguin perched outside his home on the day his pool was drained and refilled. Of course we all know that penguins are from the South Pole, and Polar Bears live in the North.

Raspi wurde nicht nach draußen gelassen. Er sah einen Ballon in Form eines Piguguins ausserhalb seiner Anlage, an dem Tag wurde das Wasser in seinem Pool abgelassen und frisch gefüllt. Natürlich wissen wir alle, dass Pinguine am Südpol leben und Eisbären leben am Nordpol.

As for the girls, they will long remember the very special tall red lady who came to visit them. 

Die beiden Eisbärinnen werden sich sicher noch lange an den Besuch der großen roten Lady erinnern.

 Happy 8^th Birthday this month to Raspi, who is also known as Rasputin and Raspoutine.

He has two birthdays because he was born in Moscow and his official birthday is November 19, 2007. He moved to Nuremburg, Germany a year later, to be a playmate for Flocke, who had been hand raised. There he was named Rasputin, for his Russian heritage, but everyone was soon calling him Raspi.

Er hat zwei Geburtstage, denn er wurde in Moskau geboren und sein offizieller Geburtstag ist am 19. November 2007. Er zog nach Nürnberg in Deutschland ein Jahr später, wurde ein Spielgefährte für Flocke, die dort von Hand aufgezogen worden war. Man nannte ihn Rasputin, nach seinem russischen Erbe, aber jeder nannte ihm bald Raspi.

But some believe he and his twin brother were really born on November 11, and his birthday is always celebrated in Nuremburg on that day.

Aber einige sagen, dass er und sein Zwillingsbruder wirklich am 11. November geboren wurden und somit wird sein Geburtstag immer in Nürnberg an diesem Tag gefeiert.

"Raspoutine" looks over his kingdom at Marineland

 He and Flocke moved to France in April of 2010, and there he was given a new French name: Raspoutine!

Flocke und er zogen dann nach Frankreich im April 2010, und es wurde ihm ein neuer Französischer Namen gegeben: Raspoutine!

Raspi, who had been living at Marineland in Antibes, France with his beloved Flocke, is now separated from his lady bear. Flocke gave birth to their daughter Hope on November 26 last year.

Raspi, der im Marineland in Antibes, Frankreich mit seiner geliebten Flocke gelebt hat, wird nun von seiner Bärendame getrennt. Flocke gebar ihre Tochter Hope am 26. November letzten Jahres-2014.

So Raspi has been living as a lonely bachelor for all of 2015, while Flocke and Hope live just down the hill.

So musste Raspi als einsamer Junggeselle 2015 leben, während Flocke und Hope, nur den Berg hinunter auf ihrer Anlage leben.

Raspi always had many visitors.
 It is quiet these days, with the park closed and under repair.

Then on the night of Saturday, October 3, a terrible flash flood ripped through Cannes, Antibes and Nice, causing much damage and loss of life. Marineland suffered greatly, with the flood waters destroying much of the infrastructure and bringing in muddy water for the marine animals. There was no electricity for days, and the park will be closed to the public until well into 2016.

Dann in der Nacht von Samstag, den 3. Oktober, passierte ein schrecklicher Sturzflut durch Canne, Antibes und Nizza, dass viele Schäden und Verlust von Menschenlebenmit sich brachte. Marineland litt sehr darunter, mit dem Hochwasser wurde vieles von der Infrastruktur zerstört und es brachte schlammiges Wasser für die Meeresbewohner. Es gab keinen Strom für viele Tage, und der Park wurde für die Öffentlichkeit bis in 2016 geschlossen.

 The polar bears' homes and yards were not affected greatly, except for loss of electricity. The frozen fish supplies were ruined. There would be no fresh ice in the ice caves or fresh water pumped into the pools for a few days, but the bears were safe. The greatest damage was done to the infrastructure systems of the park. As for the animals, some of the stingrays and sea turtles in open tanks with low sides were swept out of their tanks. The dolphins and sea lions swam in muddy tanks for days, as the Marineland staff made their repairs as quickly as possible. The Orcas fared better. For the walls of their home are very high. But sadly, a week after the flood, Valentin the Orca died of a twisted bowel.

Die Eisbären-Gebäude und die Außenanlagen waren nicht stark betroffen, mit Ausnahme für den Verlust von Elektrizität. Die Tiefkühleinrichtung für gefrorenen Fisch wurde ruiniert. Es gäbe kein frisches Eis in der Eishöhle oder Frischwasser für ein paar Tage, aber die Bären waren sicher. Der größte Schaden wurde an denInfrastruktursysteme des Parks angerichtet. So auch Schäden an den Tieren, es wurden einige der Stachelrochen und Meeresschildkröten aus offenen Behältern mit niedrigen Seiten aus ihren Schwimmbecken gefegt. Die Delphine und Seelöwen schwommen in schlammigen Becken für Tage, und das Marineland Personal tat alles so schnell wie möglich die Reparaturen auszuführen-. Den Orcas erging es besser. Die Wände ihres Beckens sind sehr hoch. Aber leider, eine Woche nach der Flut, starb Valentin der Orca an einem verdrehten Darm.

The Marineland bear family continues on as it was, with nice meals, friendly keepers, and enrichment surprises. However, there are few visitors these days, as the park is closed. And the music is silent, for which Raspi might be happy for the peace and quiet.

Die Marineland Bärenfamilie wird weiter versorgt, so wie es war, mit leckeren Speisen, freundlichen Tierpflegern, und viele Bereicherung für Überraschungen. Allerdings gibt es nur wenige Besucher in diesen Tagen, da der Park geschlossen ist. Und die Musik schweigt, darüber ist Raspi vielleicht glücklich für die Ruhe und den Frieden.

The Marineland facebook page has occasional photos of the polar bears, and they are doing well, of course. In the meantime, we wait for the spring, and the reopening of the park, so Raspi and Flocke's fans can visit again and see how baby Hope has grown up.

In der Zwischenzeit warten wir alle auf den Frühling, und die Wiedereröffnung des Parks, und dass Raspi und Flocke-Fans wieder zu Besuch sein können und sehen, wie Baby-Hope erwachsen geworden ist.
