There is a lot of excitement in Chicago right now. In addition to the World Series games, Chicago is also excited about the October 26th arrival of a new polar bear, Siku.

Momentan gibt es einiges an Aufregung in Chicago. Zusätzlich zu den World Series Spielen ist Chicago auch sehr aufgeregt in der erwarteten Ankunft eines neuen Eisbären-Siku.

Siku has lived in Lousville for the past five years.

Chicago is one of those rare cities with two zoos. Siku's father Marty was born at the Brookfied Zoo in Chicago, and now Siku, who is almost seven years old, is moving from the Louisville Zoo to the brand new exhibit at Lincoln Park Zoo. Siku's grandfather Aussie and uncle Hudson currently live at the Brookfield Zoo.

Chicago ist eine der seltenen Städte die zwei Zoos beherbergt. Sikus Vater Marty war im Brookfield Zoo in Chicago geboren, und nun wird Siku, der fast sieben Jahre alt ist vom Louisville Zoo umziehen in die brandneue Anlage im Lincoln Park Zoo. Sikus Großvater Auissie und sein Onkel Hudson leben aktuell im Brookfield Zoo.

Siku was born in Toledo on December 3, 2009, to Crystal and Marty. He moved to the Louisville Zoo when he was almost two years old. Siku's grandmother Arki (who has since died) had moved from Brookfield Zoo and was already at the Louisville Zoo.

Siku kam in Toledo zur Welt, am 3. Dezember 2009, Eltern sind Crystal und Marty. Er zog um mit fast zwei Jahren in den Louisville Zoo. Sikus Großmutter Arki, die mittlerweile verstorben ist zog um vom Brookfield Zoo und lebte dort im Louisville Zoo.

Just a few months before Siku arrived, a six month old wildborn girl cub, Qannik, arrived in the Louisville Zoo. These cubs, only a year apart and living at the same zoo, know each other well by watching each other, and living nearby, and sniffing the other's scent, but they have never been allowed to play together.

Nur wenige Monate vor Sikus Ankunft kam ein sechs Monate altes Eisbärenjunges aus der Wildnis geboren in den Lousville Zoo, ihr Name war Qannik. Diese Eisbären Jungtiere kannte sich gut, lebten nebeneinander, im gleichen Zoo, sie konnten sich beschnüffeln, aber sie durften niemals miteinander spielen.

Qannik is the property of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and they have made the rules. As of now, she is not allowed to be with any other bears. We hope that changes, as we need her genes in the polar bear zoo population.

Qannik ist das Eigentum des *Departments of Fish and Wildlife* und sie haben diese Regeln gesetzt. So auch jetzt, die Eisbärin darf keinen Kontakt zu anderen Bären haben. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass diese Regeln geändert werden, denn die wertvollen Gene werden dringend benötigt in der Eisbären Population.

Siku, as a young male polar bear, has been justifiably frustrated by the presence of a young female bear, just out of reach. So moving him is a good solution to help Siku avoid another difficult spring.

Siku ist ein junger Eisbär, es ist verständlich, dass er frustriert ist eine junge Eisbärin zu haben jedoch außer Reichweite. Ihn also zu verlegen war eine gute Entscheidung, ebeso um  Siku Schwierigkeiten wegen des kommenden Frühjahrs zu vermeiden.

Siku was slated last year to move to the Maryland Zoo to be with a much older female bear, but that move never happened.

Es war auch angedacht Siku in den Maryland Zoo zu verlegen, Gefährtin wäre eine wesentlich ältere Eisbärin gewesen-aber diese Verlegung fand nie statt.

Now the Lincoln Park Zoo has its new polar bear home, and no polar bear since resident Anana, who is almost 17, moved to the North Carolina Zoo to allow for construction. Anana was joined in North Carolina by Siku's older brother Nikita, who moved from the Kansas City Zoo.

Nun hat Lincoln Park Zoo endlich das neue Heim für Eisbären, und keinen Eisbären seit Anana, die fast 17 Jahre alt ist zum North Carolina Zoo umgezogen ist, damit die Renovierung getätigt werden konnte. Anana kam in Begleitung von Sikus älterem Bruder Nikita, der vom Kansas City Zoo dort umzog.

The new polar bear habitat at Lincoln Park is huge and has varied terrain, which is what polar bears like. The Walter Family Arctic Tundra is complete with waterfall and an ice cave, a plunge pool and dig pits, some spectacular viewing windows for visitors.

Die neue Eisbären Anlage ist riesig und hat verschiedene Bereiche, was die Eisbären sehr mögen. Die Walter Family Arctic Tundra ist komplett mit Wasserfall und einer Eishöhle, einen Schwimmteich und Sandkuhlen, und einige fantastische Schaufenster für die Besucher.

Siku will be alone for a time, although the zoo expects that a female bear will arrive at some point, and eventually there will be cubs. The polar bear enclosure is designed to raise a family of little bears. We all wonder who the lady bear might be. So many of the younger cubs are from the Brookfield Zoo family, and are closely related to Siku. And many of the female bears are too old.

Siku wird noch eine Weile allein bleiben, obwohl der Zoo erwartet, dass recht bald ein weiblicher Eisbär gefunden wird, eventuell gibt es dann auch Nachwuchs. Die Eisbären Anlage wurde gebaut, dass dort eine Eisbärenfamilie lebt. Wir fragen uns allerdings, wer denn die Eisbärin sein mag. So viele der Jungtiere des Brookfield Zoos sind dirkt verwandt mit Siku. Und so viele der Eisbärinnen sind zu alt.

Big boy

Siku weighs about 900 pounds. There is a great training area at the new zoo, and Siku is used to these training games at the Louisville Zoo. He will show the keepers his paws, his teeth, his ears, let them feel his sides, and give him a pretty good check up, all the while Siku is getting treats.

Siku wiegt ca.900 Pounds. Es gibt dort eine Trainingswand im neuen Zoo, und Siku ist an diese Trainingsspiele gewöhnt im Louisville Zoo. Er wird den Tierpflegern seine Pfoten zeigen sowie die Zähne, seine Ohren, er lässt sich am Körper abhören, man kann ihn sehr gut behandeln, und während dessen bekommt Siku kleine Belohnungen.

Always a treat for training

We have heard that Siku is moving to Chicago very shortly. The new habitat is about ready, and the Zoo is anxious to welcome Siku, the newest Chicago Cub.


Uns kam zu Ohren, dass Siku recht bald nach Chicago reisen wird. Die neue Anlage ist so gut wie fertig und der Zoo wartet ungeduldig auf Siku, das neueste Chicago Jungtier.
