Santa comes to the Cincinnati Zoo 2013

Sankt Nikolaus besucht die Tiere im Zoo von Cincinnati

It is time for Santa to bring his gifts to the animals of the Cincinnati Zoo. On the morning of December 23, he arrived with a great number of television cameramen and reporters to deliver some gifts. It was cold, but many families were present to enjoy the ceremony.

Es ist Zeit für Sankt Nikolaus um seine Geschenke zu den Tieren des Zoo von Cincinnati zu bringen. Am Morgen des 23. Dezember kam er mit einer großen Anzahl von Fernsehkameraleuteund Reporter einige Geschenke zu liefern. Es war kalt, aber viele Familien waren anwesend, um die Zeremonie zu genießen.

Santa gave Little One at the polar bear enclosure a red and green stacked frozen ice treat with fish and other goodies inside. Little One approached the treat carefully, then sat down with is back to the crowd and the cameras, as he usually does, and bit into it.

Weihnachten gab es für Little One an der Eisbärenanlage ein rot und grün gestapelt gefrorenen Eisgenuss mit Fisch und andere Leckereien im Inneren. Little One näherte sich dem Genuss sorgfältig, setzte sich dann wieder damit in die Menge und die Kameras, so wie er es in der Regel tut, und biß hinein.

There is only one treat this year, because Berit is in the den.

Yes, Santa's gift is a bit hit with Little One.

Berit was not included in the party because she is in her den. Zoo staff say she has been sleeping a lot lately. I visited three weeks ago and heard her moaning. On that day she got lots of attention and comforting from Little One. Today, she was not to be seen, and the swimming area stone door was closed, something I have never seen before. Could there be cubs on the way?

Berit war nicht an der Patry beteiligt, weil sie in ihrer Höhle ist. Zoo Mitarbeiter sagen, dass sie geschlafen hat, recht viel in letzter Zeit. Ich besuchte sie vor drei Wochen und hörte ihr Schnaufen. An diesem Tag bekam sie viel Aufmerksamkeit und Tröstliches von Little One. Heute war sie nicht zu sehen, und der Schwimmbereich sowie die Steintür waren geschlossen, etwas, das ich nie zuvor gesehen. Könnte Junge auf dem Weg sein????

Santa also brought Christmas trees filled with goodies for the Spectacled Bear and the Black Bears, although only one Black Bear woke up enough to come out.

Weihnachten brachte auch Weihnachtsbäume mit Leckereien, die für den Brillenbär und die Schwarzbären gefüllt sind, obwohl nur ein Schwarzbär wachgenug war, um herauszukommen.

John the African Lion, on of the Sensational Seven, enjoyed his first Christmas at the Cincinnati Zoo with a special Christmas tree decorated with meat chunks and a garland of sausages. He was very cautious at first, and had to make sure this wasn't a trick.

John der afrikanische Löwe genoss sein erstes Weihnachten im Zoo von Cincinnati mit einem speziellen Weihnachtsbaum mit Fleischbrocken und einem Kranz von Würsten dekoriert. Er war sehr zurückhaltend auf den ersten Versuch, und musste erst einmal sicherstellen, dass dies nicht ein Trick ist.

He finds the garlands of sausages put there by the zoo keepers.

Once he realized that this wonderful pile of gifts was really for him, he had a delightful time. John really enjoyed the sausages, and had to stand to get the highest sausage off, and knocked over the tree.

Sobald er merkte, dass dieser wunderbare Haufen von Geschenken wirklich für ihn war hatte er eine herrliche Zeit. John genossen die Würste, und mußte sich hoch aufrichten im Stehen, um die höchste Wurst zu bekommen, und klopfte auf den Baum.

John also had some wrapped presents and gift bags with other treats and maybe some toys. He grabbed one of the packages and ran off to his lair.

John hatte auch einige verpackte Geschenke und Geschenktüten mit anderen Leckereien und vielleicht ein paar Spielsachen. Er packte eines der Pakete und lief zu seinem Lager.

Santa's last stop was the Elephants. Santa carefully arranged the gifts for the three ladies.

Letzte Station war die Elefanten. Sankt Nikolaus hat die Weihnachtsgeschenke für die drei Damen sorgfältig angeordnet.

They lined up and held their trunks up, then advanced on their boxes of lovely treats.

Sie stellten sich hin und hielt ihre Stämme auf, dann näherten sie sich ihren Boxen mit schönen Leckereien.

Ready, set, go.

The three elephants quickly smashed the boxes and munched on lettuce and other goodies, all while Santa was watching.

Die drei Elefanten zertrümmerten schnell die Kisten und kauten auf Kopfsalat und anderen Leckereien, die alle währenddessen vom Weihnachtsmann beobachtete wurden.

It is one of my favorite Christmas traditions, to enjoy watching Santa give his gifts to the animals of the Cincinnati Zoo.

Es ist eine meiner Lieblings-Weihnachts- Traditionen, zu beobachten wie an Weihnachten Sankt Nikolaus seine Geschenke an die Tiere im Cincinnati Zoo übergibt und diese es genießen.

Polar Bear love at the Cincinnati Zoo

Little One gives Berit a kiss. They are very fond of each other.

It was almost two years ago that the Cincinnati Zoo's three bears became two, when Rizzo moved to Salt Lake City.

Es war vor fast zwei Jahren, dass aus dem Cincinnati Zoo zwei Bären wurden, weil Rizzo umzog nach Salt Lake City.

Berit may be smaller, but she is dominant.

The big male bear Little One had been most attracted to Rizzo during mating season, and treated Berit as a pal, a good friend, but nothing romantic.  

Den großen männlichen Eisbär Little One hatte esbwährend der Paarungszeit am meisten zu Rizzo zogen und behandelt Berit als Kumpel, eine guteFreundin, aber nichts romantisches.

Rizzo and Berit were great girlfriends, and often took naps curled up with each other. Now with Rizzo gone, Little One and Berit have forged a new relationship. They still aren't having any cubs just yet, but they are very affectionate to each other.

Rizzo und Berit waren tolle Freundinnen, und oft nahmen sie ein Nickerchen mit einander zusammengerollt. Nachdem nun Rizzo gegangen ist, haben Little One und Berit eine neue Beziehung geschmiedet. Sie haben noch keine Jungen gezeugt, aber sie sind sehr liebevoll mit einander.

Little One and Berit usually don't sleep next to each other, but they do seek out affection from one another.

Last spring the Cincinnati Zoo staff gave Berit some hormone injections to make her more receptive, and while breeding took place, there are no cubs this year. Maybe next year? These two seem to be ready for spring.

Im vergangenen Frühjahr hat das Cincinnati Zoo Personal Berit einige Hormonspritzen gegeben um sie empfänglicher zu machen, und obwohl die Paarung stattfand, gibt es keine Jungtiere in diesem Jahr. Vielleicht im nächsten Jahr? Diese beiden scheinen bereit für den Frühling sein.

Europe has its first polar bear cubs of the season. Seven year old Giovanna of Tierpark Hellabrunn In Munich, Germany gave birth to twins on December 9.

Europa hat seine ersten Eisbärenkinder der Saison. Sieben Jahre alt Giovanna von Tierpark Hellabrunn in München, Deutschland, warf Zwillinge am 9. Dezember.

This is the third winter Giovanna has denned up, in expectation of cubs, and finally she has the babies.

Dies ist der dritte Winter, den Giovanna in der Höhle verbrachte, in Erwartung von Jungen, und schließlich hat sie die Babys geboren.

There are cameras in the den and the birth was filmed in color, although we have only seen a single photo so far.

Proud father is 13 year old Yoghi. He is also the father of Blizzard, who now lives in the Hamburg Zoo.

Giovanna is known as the Italian Beauty

Giovanna, sometimes called the Italian Beauty, is well known as the childhood playmate of the late Knut in the Berlin Zoo. She and Yoghi had moved to Berlin during the construction of the beautiful new polar bear habitat in Munich. While in Berlin, Giovanna lived and played with Knut during those happy times.

Giovanna, manchmal auch als die italienische Schönheit bezeichnet, war in der Kindheit Spielgefährtin des verstorbenen Knut im Berliner Zoo. Sie und Yoghi war während des Umbaus der schönen neuen Eisbärenanlage von München nach Berlin gezogen. Während des Aufenthalts in Berlin, lebte und spielte Giovanna mit Knut in jenen glücklichen Zeiten.

The big swimming and diving pool

Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich has the finest polar bear enclosure I have seen. It has three separate areas, one with a big swimming and diving pool, a center area, and finally a natural grassy Tundra and Taiga area with a little river to play in. The visitors are separated from the bears by glass in all three areas. The bears are given many wonderful toys to play with. This new enclosure was finished in the summer of 2010 and cost 5.2 million Euros. It is 2800 square meters and triples the living space for the polar bears.

Der Tierpark Hellabrunn hat das besten Eisbärengehege,das ich gesehen habe. Es verfügt über drei separate Bereiche, einer mit einem großen Schwimm-und Tauchbecken, einem mittleren Bereich, und schließlich einer natürlichen grasbewachsenen Tundra und Taiga -Bereich mit einem kleinen Fluss zum spielen in. Die Besucher werden von den Bären durch Glas in allen drei Bereichen getrennt. Die Bären wird viel wunderbares Spielzeug zum Spielen gegeben. Diese neue Anlage wurde im Sommer 2010 fertig und kostete 5,2 Millionen Euro. Es ist 2800 Quadratmeter groß und verdreifacht den Lebensraum für die Eisbären.

The new enclosure has two birthing dens and a mother-cub area. The good news for Yoghi is that even though he can't be with Giovanna, he will still have room to play and have fun in another part of the enclosure.

Das neue Eisbärenhaus hat zwei Geburtshöhlen und einen Mutter - Jungtier -Bereich. Die gute Nachricht für Yoghi ist , dass, obwohl er nicht mit Giovanna zusammen sein kann , wird er dennoch mehr Platz haben, in einem anderen Teil der Anlage zu spielen und Spaß zu haben.

I visited Tierpark Hellabrunn in the summer of 2011. I could see that Yoghi and Giovanna have a wonderful friendship, and like to play with each other. It is probably hard for Yoghi to be separated from his lovely lady.

Ich besuchte Tierpark Hellabrunn im Sommer 2011. Ich konnte sehen, dass Yoghi und Giovanna eine wunderbare Freundschaft haben und gerne miteinander spielen. Es ist wohl schwer für Yoghi von seiner reizenden Dame getrennt zu werden.

Giovanna was born November 28, 2006 in Fasano Italy, the daughter of Marissa and the Italian Felix. She is the sister of Noel of the Copenhagen Zoo and also sister of Dea and another cub born in 2012.

Giovanna wurde 28. November 2006 in Fasano Italien, der Tochter von Marissa und dem italienischen Felix geboren. Sie ist die Schwester von Noel vom Kopenhagener Zoo und auch die Schwester von Dea und einem weiteren Jungtier im Jahr 2012 geboren.

Thirteen year old Yoghi was born November 29, 2000 in Pistoia Zoo in Tuscany, Italy, which no longer has any polar bears. Yoghi's late father Romeo was born in the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, USA in 1978. There were some inbreeding problems at Pistoia, as Yoghi's father is also the father of Yoghi's mother Bimba. And Yoghi's son Blizzard was born to Yoghi's mother Bimba. Blizzard has a very narrow family tree, with only one grandfather. Even with the inbreeding, Yoghi and Blizzard are both healthy, gentle, goodnatured bears.

Der dreizehn Jahre alte Yoghi wurde 29. November 2000 in Pistoia Zoo in der Toskana, Italien,geboren, der Zoo hält nun keine Eisbären mehr. Verstorbenen Vater Yoghi Romeo wurde in der Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, USA im Jahr 1978 geboren. Es gab einige Probleme in Inzucht Pistoia, wie Yoghi Vater ist auch der Vater von Yoghi Mutter Bimba. Und Yoghi Sohn Blizzard wurde Yoghi Mutter Bimba geboren. Blizzard hat eine sehr schmalen Stammbaum, mit nur einem Großvater. Auch mit der Inzucht, Yoghi und Blizzard sind beide gesunde, sanfet, gutmütige Bären.

These are risky days for the babies, and hopefully, all will go well and we have two little ones to watch grow up in Munich.
