Lloyd, king of Bremerhaven

Lloyd, father of six cubs, passed away May 1 from liver disease. He was 26 years old.

Lloyd had very long legs, just like his half brother Felix.
So he stood very tall.

 Lloyd was born November 26, 2000 in Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna to Olinka and Eric. His twin sister Nika died in 2019 in Karlsruhe.

Lloyd was related to many bears in Europe, and also in Japan and in the US. His American cousins are descendants of Olaf and Olga, and include Berlin, Anoki, Lee, Haley NC Anana and Kulu.

His mother Olinka was the daughter of American born Omaha, son of Olaf and Olga in the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.

His father Eric was son of Aika of Tierpark Berlin. Eric's brother Bjorn-Heinrich was father of Paula and Yuki in Japan. 

Olinka and Eric were parents of many others bears, Lara, twins Arktos and Nanuq, Vicks, and twins Todz and Sizzel. With a mother bear named Olga, Eric was also the father of Felix, who went on to father the famous Flocke, as well as Gregor and Aleut, and Charlotte.

Lloyd was born in Vienna, and moved to Bremerhaven in 2002, where he lived for most of his life with Valeska and fathered four girls. Valeska is one of the "V" cubs of Churchill and Vienna.

Lloyd moved to Karlsruhe in 2022, where he lived for a short time with his niece Charlotte. In 2023 he moved to Budapest, and then in 2024 to Sosto, where he fathered twin boys Jorek and Ootek with Simona's daughter Sneschana.

Lloyd's daughter Lale is now in Emmen in the Netherlands.

Anna and Elsa, named for the ice princess sisters in "Frozen," are in  Zoo Brno in the Czech Republic. I have not visited them. 

Although they were born several years apart,
 for a time sisters Lale and Lili lived together
 in the zoo in Emmen in the Netherlands.

When Lloyd lived in Bremerhaven, he had a vast terrain in this tiny zoo on the North Sea. He could look out the windows at the wild sea beyond.

When Valeska had cubs to take care of, the zoo would keep Lloyd behind the scenes all day, and only let him out in the late afternoon, after mother and children were put away for the day.

At 26, he was the oldest male bear in Europe, but it is still too young to lose such a magnificent polar bear as was Lloyd.

For International Polar Bear Day, I am paying tribute to that grand lady Aika, age 35, and her large family all over the world. She became the mother of three sons with Gorki at Berlin Tierpark, is matriarch to 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

Für internationale Eisbär Tag, zahle ich Tribut an diese großen Dame Aika, 35 Jahre alt, und ihrer großen Familie auf der ganzen Welt. Sie wurde die Mutter von drei Söhnen mit Gorki in Berlin Tierpark ist Matriarchin bis 10 Enkelkinder, 6 Urenkel und ein Ur-Ur-Enkel.

Aika may very well be the oldest polar bear alive, too. She was born November 24, 1980, in Katowice, Poland, which makes her 35 years old.

Es ist sehr gut möglich dass Aika die älteste Eisbärin ist die noch am Leben ist. Sie war am 24 November 1980 geboren, in Katowice, Polen, sie ist nun schon 35 Jahre alt.

When she was two years old, she moved the Tierpark Berlin: that was in 1982.

In 1986 she gave birth to Bjorn-Heinrich, who fathered three cubs. He lived for a time in Palic, Serbia, and finally died in 2011 at the age of 25. He fathered daughters Yuki (1999) and Paula (2004), who are in Japan, and son Yorik (2006), who lives in Palic, after a time in Sosto Zoo in Hungary. None of these three have had offspring so far. Paula has lived at the zoo in Sendai since 2005, and was there at the time of the Tsunami in 2012. Those were tragic times in Sendai  and they were lucky the Tsunami stopped short of the zoo.

Das waren tragische Zeiten in Sendai, und sie hatten das große Glück, die Tsunamiflutwelle wurde kurz vor dem Zoo gestoppt.

And now we come to Eric, who was born December 8, 1993 in Berlin. When he was just under one year old, he was sent to Vienna, where he met a two year girl cub Olinka, and her mother Olga, who was wildborn.  Olinka had an American born father, Omaha.

Und nun kommen wir zu Eric, der 8. Dezember geboren wurde, 1993 in Berlin. Als er knapp ein Jahr alt war, wurde er nach Wien geschickt, wo er ein zweijähriges Eisbären Mädchen Olinka traf, und ihre Mutter Olga, die in der Wildnis geboren war.  Eric lived happily with the mother and daughter, and in 2000, Olinka and Eric gave birth to twins, Lloyd and Nika in November of 2000.

Nika now lives in Karsruhe. Lloyd is the father of Lale of Bremerhaven, and a new daughter just born, with Valeska. Lale is now in Emmen.

Nika lebt heute in Karlsruhe. Lloyd ist der Vater von Lale aus dem Zoo in Bremerhaven und eine neue Tochter ist im Winter 2015 gerade geboren worden, von Valeska. Lale ist jetzt in Emmen in den Niederlanden.

The following year, in 2001, Eric fathered cubs with Olga, and that was Nord and Felix. These are the only cubs he had with the mother, Olga. Nord lives in Tallin, Estonia.

Im folgenden Jahr, 2001, zeugte Eric wieder Jungtiere mit Olga, und das waren Nord und Felix. Dies sind die einzigen Jungtiere, die er mit der Mutter hatte. Nord lebt in Tallin, Estland.

 Felix is the father of Flocke, Gregor, Aleut and Charlotte, all born in Nuremburg with Vera, and also daughters Milak with Victoria and the late Augo with Malik in Aalborg Denmark. Milak now lives in Canada. Flocke gave birth to Hope last year in Antibes, France, with Rasputin, so Aika is Hope's great great grandmother.

Felix ist der Vater von Flocke, Gregor, Aleut und Charlotte, alle geboren in im Tierpark in Nürnberg mit Vera, und und er zeugte auch eine Tochter namens Milak mit Victoria und der leider verstorbenen Augo mit Malik im Aalborg Zoo in Dänemark. Milak lebt heute inm Zoo Sauvage St.Felicien Quebec, Kanada. Flocke gebar im vergangenen Jahr in Antibes, Frankreich Eisbärmädchen Hope, Vater ist Rasputin, somit ist Aika Hopes Ur- Urgroßmutter.

Olinka and Eric had daughter Lara in 2004 and twins Arktos and Nanuq in 2007. Lara lives in Gelsenkirchen, Arktos has moved to Scotland, and Nanuq lives in Hanover.

Eric lived in Vienna until the end of 2008, when he moved to Rotterdam. Olinka moved to Rotterdam in the spring of 2010, and that fall, they had Vicks, who became famous when he playfully threw a rock at the expensive giant viewing window of the polar bear pool, and broke it. Naughty Vicks! 

Eric lebte in Wien bis Ende 2008, als er dann nach Rotterdam verlegt wurde. Olinka wurde ebenso nach Rotterdam im Frühjahr 2010 versandt, und im Herbst bekamen sie Vicks, der berühmt wurde, als er spielerisch einen Stein im Wasser warf und die große Fensterscheibe des Eisbären Pools traf und diese zersplitterte in viele kleine Scherben. Frecher Vicks!

Olinka gave birth to twins again in the fall of 2014, but Eric was not well, and he died in February of 2015. The cubs were named Todz (boy) and Sizzel (girl), and they are still with their mother in Rotterdam.

Olinka gebar nochmals Zwillinge im Herbst 2014, aber Eric ging es gar nicht mehr gut, und er starb im Februar 2015. Die Jungtiere wurden Todz genannt (Junge) und Sizzel (Mädchen), und sie sind immer noch mit ihrer Mutter in Rotterdam.

Aika has an adopted family too, in Berlin Tierpark. When two year old Tanja arrived from Moscow, old Aika became young again by playing games with the young cub. Later, another two year old cub Wololdja, arrived also from Moscow, and she made him feel welcome too.

Aika bekam dann eine Adoptivfamilie, im Berlin Tierpark. Als die zwei Jahre alte Tanja aus Moskau angekommen war, wurde dieschon getagte alte Aika wurde wieder jung durch Spiele mit der jungen Eisbärin. Später kam noch ein weiteres Jungtier hinzu, sein Name ist Wololdja, er kam auch aus Moskau, und sie nahm ihn auch willkommen.

 At  age 35, Aika stille plays and has fun with the toys that are now allowed in the Berlin zoos. She truly has an international family, with grandchildren all over the world.

Im Alter von 35, spielt Aika immer noch und hat Spaß mit dem Spielzeug, das jetzt in den Berliner Zoos erlaubt sind. Sie hat wirklich eine internationale Familie, mit Enkelkindern auf der ganzen Welt.

New Year's Eve last year in the bustling German port of Bremerhaven was a quiet one, to provide peace and calm to new mother Valeska at Zoo am Meer in Bremerhaven.

Silvester im letzten Jahr in dem geschäftigen deutschen Hafen von Bremerhaven war eine ruhiges Fest mit Frieden und Ruhe, für die neue Mutter Valeska im Zoo am Meer in Bremerhaven.

Zoo am Mer is very small in size, and sits right on the sea.
 This is the view from across the little man made bay,
 with a sailing ship behind the zoo.

A request had gone out to forego the usual noisy fireworks that light up the sky on New Year's Eve over the water by the oceanside zoo, so Valeska and her two week old cub Lale would not be disturbed.

Eine Anforderung war ausgeschrieben, auf die üblichen lauten Feuerwerke, die den Himmel aufleuchten lassen für dieses Silvester über dem Wasser von der Meeresseite desZoos zu verzichten, so dass Valeska und ihr zwei Wochen altes Jungtier Lale nicht unnötig gestört werden würde.

 This unique and tiny zoo is right on the ocean, with the blue waters of the sea visible behind the polar bears. Lale had been born on December 17, 2013, and everyone in the city wanted only the best for her, so New Year's Eve was a quiet one last year.

Dieses einzigartige und kleinen Zoo ist direkt am Meer, mit dem blauen Wasser des Meeres hinter den Eisbären zu sehen. Lale war am 17. Dezember 2013 geboren wurde, und jeder in der Stadt wollte nur das Beste für sie, somit war Silvester ein ruhiges im vergangenen Jahr 2013.

Lale's mother is 10 year old Valeska, daughter of Vienna and the late Churchill. Valeska's twin sister Venus, the mother of 3 year old Ranzo, just gave birth to twins in Finland last week. Valeska and Venus are also sisters of Victoria of Aalborg Zoo (Lale is Milak's cousin), Victor (father of Huggie's cubs), Vilma (mother of Anori), and Vitus. And now we have learned that Vilma has just given birth December 3 at Rostock.

Lale Mutter ist die 10 Jahre alte Valeska, die Tochter von Vienna und dem verstorbenen Churchill. Valeska Zwillingsschwester Venus, die Mutter vom 3-jährigen Ranzo, gerade gebar Zwillinge in Ranua, Finnland in der vergangenen Woche. You can climb to a high vantage point to watch the bears from above

Zoo am Meer devotes about a third of its space to the polar bear family. During the day, Lale and her mother play in the two large connected enclosures, and Father Lloyd is limited to a very small enclosure not seen by the public. Late in the day, Mother and Daughter go inside and Father Lloyd gets to play in the evening.

Der kleine Zoo am Meer widmet etwa ein Drittel der Anlage für die Eisbärenfamilie. Während des Tages, Lale und ihre Mutter spielen in den beiden großen angeschlossenen Gehegen und Vater Lloyd ist auf einem sehr kleinen Gehege nicht von der Öffentlichkeit einzusehen. Lale is a true celebrity in Bremerhaven. The zoo gift shop is filled with Lale merchandise. All the children know her name and her story, and she is the star attraction. 

Lale ist eine wahre Berühmtheit in Bremerhaven. Der Zoo Geschenk-Shop ist mit Lale Waren gefüllt. Alle Kinder kennen ihren Namen und ihre Geschichte, und sie ist die Hauptattraktion.

There's that bone again

Lale gives a very entertaining show with her funny antics. She has a very large pool, but if you want to view the underwater window, you have to walk down a long way, and hope she is still in the water when you get there.

Lale gibt eine sehr unterhaltsame Show mit ihrem lustigen Possen. Sie hat einen sehr großen Pool, aber wenn man die Unterwasserfenster anschauen möchte, müssen Sieeinen langen Weg hinunter steigen, und hoffen, dass sie noch im Wasser ist, wenn Sie dort ankommen.

She loves to play in the dirt and becomes a brown bear too, sometimes. Her favorite toy when I visited her was a rawhide bone to toss into the air. On other days she plays with a traffic cone, or a ball.

Sie liebt es, im Schmutz spielen und wird manchmal auch zu einem Braunbären. Ihr Lieblingsspielzeug, als ich sie besuchte, war ein Schlachttierknochen, in die Luft zu werfen machte ihr sehr viel Spaß. An anderen Tagen spielt sie mit einem Leitkegel oder einer Kugel.

  Lale will stay at Bremerhaven for at least another year, and then the EEP plans to move her to a new large polar bear facility in Emmen, Netherlands, now under construction. The plan is that she would move there with other little girl bear cubs until they grow up. 

Lale wird in Bremerhaven für mindestens ein weiteres Jahr bleiben und dann hat die EEP geplant, sie zu einer neuen großen Eisbärenanlage nach Emmen, Niederlande zu verlegen ,diese Anlage ist noch im Bau. Der Plan ist, dass sie dort mit anderen kleinen weiblichen Bärenjungen gemeinsam aufwächst, bis sie erwachsen sein werden.

She likes her rawhide bone today, but on other days she plays endlessly with a traffic cone or a ball or some other special game.

 She is a local celebrity.

But this year there is a birthday party for Lale at Zoo am Meer in Bremerhaven, with a special cake and lots of toys, and probably fireworks over the sea for the New Year.

Aber in diesem Jahr gibt es eine Geburtstagsparty für Lale am Zoo am Meer in Bremerhaven, mit einem speziellen Kuchen und jede Menge Spielzeug und Feuerwerk über dem Meer ist für das Neue Jahr wahrscheinlich.
