Today, November 15, would have been Tundra's 30th birthday. Sadly, she passed away in September, only three months after her move from the concrete enclosure of the Indianapolis Zoo where she had spent most of her life to the spacious and grassy Detroit Zoo. 

Heute, am 15. November wäre Tundras 30. Geburtstag gewesen. Traurig- abersie  verstarb  schon im September, nur drei Monate, nachdem sie das gepflasterte Gehege, in dem sie die meiste Zeit ihres Daseins im Indianapolis Zoo verlassen hatte und den großzügig angelegten, begrünten Rasenplatz im Detroit Zoo erkunden konnte.

I got word that we had lost her when I had just arrived in Europe to visit the polar bears there. I thought how sad it was that she had arrived in Detroit, where she had room to roam, deep pools in which to swim, and grass to roll around in, and she had only a few months to enjoy it. She had passed the physical exam in preparation for her move, and had been declared to be in good health, even though she was almost 30 years old.

Mich erreichte die Nachricht, dass wir sie verloren hatten nachdem ich gerade in Europa angekommen war um dort andere Eisbären zu besuchen. Ich dachte,wie traurig es ist, sie war doch gerade erst angekommen sich umzuschauen, im tiefen Pool zu schwimmen und sich im Gras zu rollen. Und sie hatte leider nur wenige Monate es auch zu genießen.
Sie war physisch auf den bevorstehenden Umzug vorbereitet worden, und es war erklärt worden, dass sie trotz ihres hohen Alters von 30 Jahren in guter Kondition war.

 Tundra was born November 15, 1986 in the San Diego Zoo. I think she was the last cub born there. In 1988 she moved to Indianapolis to a brand new enclosure, and she spent the next 28 years there, sometimes with one bear or another, and often alone. She never did have any cubs. The zoo decided to close the exhibit this summer, and Tundra was moved to polar bear paradise, the Arctic Ring of Life in the Detroit Zoo.

Ich vermute, sie war das letzte Jungtier dort. 1988 zog sie um nach Indianapolis in einen brandneue Anlage, und sie verbrachte die weiteren 28 Jahre dort. Manchmal in Gesellschaft eines Eisbären, oftmals auch ganz allein. Sie zeugte jedoch niemals irgendwelchen Nachwuchs. Der Zoo entschied diesen Sommer die Anlage still zu legen, und Tundra zog um ins Eisbären Paradies *The Arctic Ring* im Detroit Zoo.

I am happy she was able to enjoy her last few months in such a natural, roomy place. She became ill on a Sunday morning, and her condition became worse very quickly, and she was gone by the next morning. No cause of death has been announced.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass sie wenigstens die letzten Monate in einer natürlichen, geräumigen Anlage verbringen konnte. Sie erkrankte am Sonntag, der Zustand verschlechterte sich rapide und sie verstarb am nächsten Morgen. Eine Todesursache wurde nicht publik gemacht.

 She remained sociable and playful to her last days, often posing for photographers, and romping with her toys. She was a happy bear, and well loved in Indianapolis and Detroit. 

Sie blieb zugänglich und spielfreudig bis zu ihrem letzten Tag, posierte oft für die Fotographen, und tobte mit ihrem Spielzeug. Sie war eine zufriedene Eisbärin und sehr beliebt in Indianapolis und Detroit.

Later this week, 29 year old Tundra will pack up her toys and move to the Detroit Zoo. She has spent the past week saying goodbye to her regular visitors and zoo staff members, who shared memories about her coming to Indianapolis as a young bear, and playing in the pool with other bears. There are some folks who have zoo memberships and come to see her every week. She is definitely a favorite.

Im Laufe dieser Woche wird die 29 Jahre alte Tundra ihre Spielsachen packen und in den Zoo in Detroit umziehen. In der letzen Woche hat sie sich schon von ihren regelmäßigen Besuchern verabschiedet, die gemeinsame Erinnerungen haben als sie noch mit anderen Eisbären im Pool spielen konnte. Einige Besucher haben eine Mitgliedschaft im Zoo und besuchen sie jede Woche.

The Indianapolis Zoo moved to its current location in the White River State Park in 1988, and built a brand new polar bear habitat. Tundra has lived there since the beginning, arriving when she was just a 2 year old cub. Over the years, other polar bears have come and gone, and now Tundra is all alone.

Der Zoo in Indianapolis wurde am aktuellen Ort im White River State Park 1988  gebaut, mit einem neu errichteten Eisbärengehege, und Tundra hat dort von Anbeginn gewohnt, sie kam dort hin im Alter von nur 2 Jahren. In all den Jahren sind einige Eisbären dort gewesen und auch wieder gegangen,und dann war Tundra ganz allein.

We visited her on Friday, just five days before her last day in public. 

Wir haben sie am Freitag besucht, nur noch fünf Tage für sie hier in der Öffentlichkeit.

The tops of her back feet were shaved, probably because the staff had drawn blood for the normal tests before travelling.

Die Sohlen ihrer Hinterpfoten waren rasiert-wahrscheinlich wurden Bluttests entnommen bevor die Reise dann los geht.

Tundra will have a much bigger pool in which to swim and play in Detroit.

She was sleeping when we arrived, but we were told she had been swimming in the early morning, playing with her favorite red spool toy. Later she was walking around her habitat, enjoying her last few days here. 

Sie schlief als wir dort ankamen, aber man erzählte uns dass sie am Morgen schwimmen war und mit ihrem Lieblingsspielzeug, einer roten Holzspule gespielt habe. Danach ging sie auf der Anlage spazieren und genoss ihre letzen Tage hin zu sein.

Tundra spent quite a bit of her afternoon in the pool, putting on a great show for all her fans, as she played and splashed and did somersaults underwater.

Zoo staffers have been stopping by to say farewell, too. She has always been there, from the beginning. After June 22, 2016, she will be moving on to a spacious new habitat in Detroit. Some people have talked about making that trip north to see her. She will be missed in Indianapolis, that is for sure.

Die Zootierpfleger haben sich auch von ihr verabschiedet. Sie war immer hier, von Anfang an. Nach dem 22. Juni 2016 wird sie in ein noch größeres Gehege in Detroit kommen. Eine Besucher haben schon gesagt, dass sie die Reise gen Norden machen werden um sie dort zu besuchen. In Indianapolis wird sie vermisst werden,das ist sicher.

Her home in the Indianapolis Zoo since 1988 has no grass. Tundra will enjoy discovering the joys of rolling around in the meadow in the Detroit Zoo.

29 year old Tunda, who has lived in the Indianapolis Zoo for almost all her life, will be moving north in a couple of weeks. The zoo has decided to close the polar bear exhibit, which was state of the art when it was built in 1988, and young Tundra arrived as the first occupant. But now it would need expensive updating. There are so few polar bears in U.S. zoos, now only about 50, so the Indianapolis Zoo plans to convert the polar bear habitat for another species, and Tundra will have a spectacular new home in Detroit.

Die 29 Jahre Tundra, die fast ihr ganzes Leben im Zoo von Indianapolis verbracht hat wird in wenigen Wochen in den Norden umziehen. Der Zoo hat entschieden, die Eisbärenanlage zu schließen, die 1988 nach neuestem Stand erbaut wurde und die damals junge Tundra war die erste Bewohnerin. Nun wären aber kostspielige Umbauten notwendig. Und da es nur noch sehr wenige Eisbären in den USA Zoos gibt, im Ganzen noch 50 Eisbären hat der Zoo von Indianapolis sich entschieden, die Fläche der Eisbärenanlagen anderen Tierarten hinzu zu fügen und Tundra bekommt eine fantastische neues Heim in Detroit.

Tundra was born in the San Diego Zoo in 1986 to parents Bonni and Caspar, and moved to Indianapolis at the age of 18 months. 

Tundra wurde im Zoo von San Diego  1986 geboren, die Eltern waren Bonni und Caspar ,und sie kam dann im Alter von 18 Monaten nach Indianapolis.

Tundra has been alone in the polar bear habitat at the Indianapolis Zoo since 2009 when her companion, 34 year old Tahtsa, a tiny lady polar bear at just 300 pounds, passed away.

Seit 2009 ist Tundra allein in der Eisbärenanlage nachdem ihre Mitbewohnerin, die 34 Jahre alte Tahtsa, eine recht kleine Eisbärin mit nur 300 pounds Gewicht verstorben war.

The habitat has a deep diving pool with a viewing window, and a nice waterfall. Tundra likes to sit on a rock near the surface and blow bubbles.

Die Anlage hat einen tiefen Pool zum Tauchen mit einem Fenster für die Besucher und einen Wasserfall. Tundra sitzt gern auf einem Felsen am Rand des Wasser und pustet Blasen.

Tundra is always posing for photographers. She is very aware of her visitors.

Tundra on the move

  There is always concern about moving a bear of her advanced age of 29 years, but Tundra has remained healthy and playful. The oldest polar bear in the world currently is Aika, age 35, the Tierpark Berlin in Germany. Tundra's grandmother Freida lived to the ripe old age of 37!

Es gibt immer Bedenken, eine Eisbärin in ihrem fortgeschrittenen Alter zu verlegen,aber Tundra ist gesund und sehr verspielt. Die momentan älteste Eisbärin der Welt ist Aika, sie ist 35 Jahre alt und lebt im Tierpark in Berlin, Deutschland. Tundra's Großmutter Freida wurde sogar 37 Jahre alt.

 Her new home at the Detroit Zoo is a paradise for polar bears. There is a huge salt water pool, with an underwater viewing tunnel called the Polar Passage. The polar bears enjoy sitting on the top of the tunnel, so you can get a close up look at the bears. The seals are adjacent to the polar bears, and their underwater area is adjacent.

Ihr neues Zuhause im Detroit Zoo ist ein Paradies für Eisbären. Es enthält einen Pool mit Meerwasser, einen Unterwasser Tunnel-genannt die Polar Passage. Die Eisbären sitzen gern oben auf dem Tunnel, und die Besucher können die Eisbären auch von unten her beobachten. Die Seehunde sind der Anlage angeschlossen, ihr Unterwasserbereich ist verbunden.

Talini has always delighted in "hunting" seals while she swims. The seals know they are safe and it is a game, and they play along. Maybe Tundra will learn this fun game too.

Talini hat viel Vergnügen beim Jagen nach den Seehunden während sie unter Wasser schwimmt. Und die Seehunde wissen, dass sie in Sicherheit sind, es ist ein Spiel und sie spielen gemeinsam. Vielleicht wird Tundra dies neue Spiel auch lernen und Spaß daran haben.

There is also a spacious tundra, with wildflowers, grassy rolling hills and a little pond. The  grassy area is separate from the Arctic area, so Tundra can have a space to herself to adjust to her new situation.

Es befindet sich dort auch eine großzügige Rasenfläche mit Wildblumen, Gras bewachsene Hügel und ein kleiner Teich. Die Rasenfläche ist vom Arctic Bereich getrennt, somit wird Tundra Platz für sich haben um sich an die neue Umgebung zu gewöhnen.

 The Arctic Ring of Life at the Detroit Zoo has been home to many bears, up to four or five at a time. Currently, there are only two polar bears living there.

Der Arctic Rind of Life im Zoo von Detroit ist schon Heimal für viele Eisbären gewesen, manchmal vier oder fünf zur gleichen Zeit.  Im Moment gibt es nur zwei Eisbären leben dort.

Her new companions are a young breeding pair, although they have not yet had any cubs. Talini and Nuka are both 11 years old. Talini is a little territorial, and does not like to share her space, so she will have to get used to the old grandma lady moving in. 

Ihre neuen Mitbewohner sind ein junges Paar, die bislang aber noch keinen Nachwuchs hervor gebracht haben. Talini und Nuka sind beide 11 Jahre alt. Talini ist sehr eigenwillig, und teilt auch nicht gern ihre Anlage, jedoch wird sie sich einfügen müssen wenn die alte Dame dann auch mit einzieht.

Tundra has been so used to living alone, she may not want to share, either. Maybe the Detroit Zoo will keep Tundra separate for some time. They do have four acres for the bears to roam around. American zoos usually have a 30 day quarantine for a newly arrived bear. 

Tundra hat schon recht lange allein gelebt, vielleicht mag sie auch keine Gesellschaft haben. Eventuell wird der Zoo in Detroit Tundra eine Weile separat halten, es gibt Platz genug, vier Acres für alle Bären zum herum strömern. In Amerikanischen Zoos ist es üblich einen neu ankommenden Eisbären 30 Tage in Quarantäne zu halten.

It will be exciting to see how Tundra adjusts to living in the largest, most beautiful polar bear habitat in the country. 


Es wird aufregend  sein zu erleben, wie Tundra sich einfügt in die größte ,schönste Eisbärenanlage des Landes.

Tundra - still young at age 25

Tundra, the 25 year old lady polar bear at the Indianapolis Zoo, may be alone, but she is not lonely. This gorgeous bear looks a lot younger than her years, and is popular with the photographers in the crowds who gather around her lovely home.

Her fur is thick and fluffy, and she certainly doesn't look like a senior citizen. She is also quite playful and active, much to the delight of all her visitors. She likes to sit on the rock ledge in the water, put her mouth just under the surface of the water, and blow bubbles.

Tundra was born at the San Diego Zoo on November 15, 1986, the daughter of longtime San Diego Zoo residents, the very popular couple Bonnie and Caspar. I can't find any record of Bonnie having more cubs after Tundra, even though Bonnie lived until 2001. Caspar died in 1996. In fact the San Diego Zoo hasn't had a cub born since the late 80s.

Tundra came to the Indianapolis Zoo on May 9, 1988, at the age of 17 months.

I don't know about Tundra's companions at the zoo during those early years, but there were two bears with her in recent years.

Young Triton, son of Norton and Trixie, was born at the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence RI, and came from the Detroit Zoo in 2004, but sadly died of a twisted colon on April 11, 2008 at the age of 11. Incidentally, Triton was the father of Talini, born in 2005 in the Detroit Zoo. Talini's mother is Barle, who was rescued from a Mexican circus.

Tahtsa, a petite little old lady polar bear, came to the Indianapolis Zoo in October of 2006. Tahtsa was born in the Denver Zoo November 20, 1974, but spent most of her life in the Louisville Zoo. When Tahtsa died on August 12, 2009, she was said to be the oldest polar bear in captivity or in the wild, just a few months short of her 35^th birthday. The two lady bears were always kept separate, however, and were never out at the same time.

The habitat has a lovely waterfall, and a nice swimming area with an underwater viewing window so everyone can enjoy watching Tundra swim and dive and blow bubbles.

So Tundra is now the only polar bear in Indianapolis, but she seems happy enough, and she looks fabulous.
