Ein neues Mädchen ist in der Stadt, Anana

Sometime in the middle of November, Anana left her home in the Buffalo Zoo, which she shared with four year old daughter Luna, and made her way down to the Cincinnati Zoo to meet a new guy. At the same time, Berit left Cincinnati for the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

Irgendwann Mitte November verließ Anana ihr Heim im Buffalo Zoo, das sie gemeinsam mit ihrer vier Jahre alten Tochter Luna geteilt hatte und machte sich auf den Weg zum Cincinnati Zoo um einen neuen Kumpel zu treffen. Zur selben Zeit verließ Berit den Cincinnati Zoo, um in den Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin umzuziehen.

Anana spent the ten days after her arrival in the hidden lower quarters of the Lords of the Arctic polar bear home. Then today, on November 30, she came forth to meet her public, and the cameras. There were a number of video cameras, maybe even a TV camera there. 


Zehn Tage nach ihrer Ankunft verbrachte Anana die außer Sicht gelegene hintere Anlage der Lords of theArctic. Heute nun, am 30. November kam sie nun zum Vorschein für das Publikum und die Kameras. Es waren viele Video Kameras vor Ort, eventuell auch eine TV Kamera.

She played with her new balls, then tried out the pool, much to the delight of the photographers. People remarked on how cute she is, and how tiny. She only weighs 550 pounds, which is rather small for a female polar bear.


Sie spielte mit den neuen Bällen, probierte den den Pool, sehr zur Freude der Photografen. Die Zuschauer bemerkten wie nett sie sei und wie klein. Sie wiegt nur 550 pounds, was recht klein ist für eine weibliche Eisbärin.

She had a few snacks, some apples, a carrot. After a bit, she went to sit by the door separating the two enclosures, because the male, Little One, was on the other side.


Sie bekam einige Leckerbissen, ein paar Äpfel, eine Karotte. Nach einigen Bissen setzte sie sich an die Tür, welche die zwei Anlagen teilt, weil sich dort auf der anderen Seite das Männchen Little One aufhielt.

She will not meet Little One face to face for another three weeks, but they can smell each other. It looks like she is anxious to meet her new boyfriend.


Von Angesicht zu Angesicht wird es weitere drei Wochen dauern, bis sie auf Little One treffen wird, aber sie können sich schon beschnuppern. Sieht so aus, als als würde sie begierig auf ihren neuen Freund warten.

Anana was born on December 12, 2000 in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Chinook and Andy, and is related to very few American bears, so her genes are very valuable. She is the mother of four year old Luna, who was born in the Buffalo Zoo, and hand raised by keepers when Anana did not show an interest in taking care of the baby.

Anana kam am 12. Dezember 2000 in Salt Lake City zur Welt, die Tochter von Chinook und Andy, und ist mit sehr wenigen Amerikanischen Eisbären verwandt, somit sind ihre Gene sehr wertvoll. Sie ist Mutter von der vier jährigen Luna, die im Buffalo Zoo geboren wurde und dann von Hand aufgezogen wurde, da Anana keinerlei Interesse zeigte, sich um ihren Nachwuchs zu kümmern.

Her new suitor, Little One, is 27 years old and has not yet fathered any cubs. He is also mostly unrelated to the other polar bears in American zoos, so his genes are quite valuable and it is hoped that he and Anana will produce cubs after the next mating season. So many of the younger bears in American zoos are closely related, so it would be wonderful if Anana and Little One would produce a family.


Ihr neuer Gefährte Little One ist 27 Jahre alt, und hat bislang keinerlei Jungtiere gezeugt. Auch er ist kaum mit den amerikanischen Zooeisbären verwandt, somit  sind auch seine Gene recht wertvoll und es wird erhofft, daß er und Anana in der kommenden Paarunszeit Jungtiere zeugen werden.So viele der jüngeren Eisbären  in den amerikanischen Zoo sind miteinander verwandt, somit wäre es wunderbar, sollten Anana und Little One eine Familie gründen.

He could smell her, and was interested in finding her.

Little One is indeed interested. The first day she was there, he could smell her, and he definitely knew someone new had arrived. He was sniffing the air, and acting excited. He is also a small bear, weighing about 725 pounds.


Little One ist sehr interessiert. Die ersten Tage als sie angekommen war konnte er sie riechen, und wusste schon, dass daß jemand Neues angekommen war. Er schnupperte in der Luft und benahm sich sehr aufgeregt. Er ist auch ein recht kleiner Eisbär, wiegt ungefähr 725 pounds.

Little One and Berit had been together for over ten years, and not produced any cubs. They had a strong friendship, but there had not been very much romance in the past year. 


Little One und Berit waren fast zehn Jahre zusammen, zeugten aber keinen Nachwuchs. Es bestand eine enge Freundschaft, aber kaum eine romantische Beziehung im letzten Jahr.

Anana's one cub Luna was fathered by Nanuq, who is now at the Columbus Zoo, where he has fathered Nora last year, and three more cubs this year by twin sisters Aurora and Anana (a different one).


Ananas Nachwuchs Luna wurde von Nanuq gezeugt, der nun im Columbus Zoo lebt, dort zeugte er Nora im letzten Jahr, sowie drei weitere Jungtiere mit den Zwillingsschwestern Aurora und Anana (welche eine andere Eisbärin gleichen Namens ist).

Anana did spend some time at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago while the Buffalo Zoo built a beautiful new polar bear complex.While at Brookfield, she spent time with older male bear Aussie, but he is very domineering and not playful at all, and she did not particularly like him.

Anana verbrachte eine Weile im Brookfield Zoo während der Buffalo Zoo eine wunderschöne Eisbärenanlage errichtete. Während der Zeit im Brookfiel Zoo verbrachte sie Zeit mit einem älteren Eisbären namens Aussie, der jedoch sehr dominant  und nicht sehr spielfreudig war, sie schien ihn auch nicht sonderlich zu mögen.

Little One. It will be three more weeks before they meet face to face.

Little One is an easy going bear, and he does like to play, which should make Anana happy. Little One always allowed Berit to be the boss.


Little One ist ein sehr umgäglicher Eisbär, er mag es zu spielen, das sollte Anana glücklich machen. Little One erlaubte auch Berit immer der Boss zu sein.

Anana seems to really like carrots

Maybe the new Cincinnati pair will prove to be a love match, and the Cincinnati Zoo will have polar bear cubs in the near future. The zoo has not seen cubs since 1989 when Amy/Connie had twins, one of whom is still alive. Berlin is living in the Kansas City Zoo.


Vielleicht ist das neue Paar aus Cincinnati ein Glücksgriff und der Cincinnati Zoo kann sich zukünftig über Eisbärennachwuchs freuen. Der Zoo hat keinen Nachwuchs seit 1989, nachdem  Amy/Connie Zwillinge gezeugt hatten. Eines ist noch am Leben. Berlin lebt im Kansas City Zoo.
