Gladys gets her first look at the outside world

I am taking a small break from the polar bears today to bring you the story of little Gladys at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Ever since I heard that a newborn Western Lowland Gorilla had been brought to the Cincinnati Zoo to be raised by hand, and then by one of our lady gorillas, I had wanted to see this little darling.

Yesterday I had my chance. Three month old Baby Gladys was in the spotlight yesterday for her big Media Day at the Cincinnati Zoo, and I was there!

Gladys was born in January 29 in the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, but her mother showed no maternal instinct, as sometimes happens with first time mothers. She was flown to Cincinnati where there were four candidates to be her mother.

It took a team of 10 expert caretakers to provide Gladys with round-the-clock care

For the past few months, a team of ten surrogates have been taking care of Gladys, wearing special vests that are just like Gorilla fur. They crawl around, eat bananas, and act like gorillas so Gladys will know how to be a gorilla. In the next few months, one of the four lady gorillas will become her foster mother. Gladys will still have to come to her keepers for her bottle of milk.

Primate team leader Ron Evans carried Gladys into the outside world for the first time yesterday. The baby clung to his shoulder, wide-eyed at the sunshine. He carried her over to her circle of caretakers seated on the ground, and passed her to them. Then he handed out bananas.

Gladys weighs about ten pounds now. She will be out in the gorilla enclosure for a few hours in the early afternoon every day now, if it is warm enough. Now we are all waiting to see who will be her gorilla mother. Will it be one of the two experienced gorilla mothers, Samantha, age 43, or M'Linzi, age 30, or one of the very interested teenagers, Chewie or Mara?
