Kali and Luna - Best Friends at the Buffalo Zoo

Kali and Luna have a new favorite toy - a PVC plumbing pipe with a moveable ring.
 The cubs fight over and play with this toy for hours.

The Buffalo Zoo is looking to an exciting future, with the polar bear cubs Kali and Luna at the center. They are close to meeting their fund raising goal to build a fine new polar exhibit called Arctic Edge.

These adorable little playmates have been attracting crowds of adoring fans this summer. They have a small pool and a nice wooded area to play in, perfect while they are still small. Their zookeepers make sure they have new and interesting toys, and these little bears play together very nicely, stealing toys from each other every few minutes and chasing each other around.

Luna was born November 27, 2012 to mother Anana and father Nanuq at the Buffalo Zoo. Anana did not take care of Luna, so the cub was handraised by one of the keepers. For a time, no one knew that Luna existed and she was secretly being raised in the keeper's apartment.

Kali plans his next move to steal the pipe

Kali was born in the wilds of Alaska. His mother was shot and killed by native hunter, but Kali was rescued and brought to the Alaska Zoo in March. Kali was brought to the Buffalo Zoo in May, to be a playmate for Luna. He is thought to be about 6 months old.

Luna's parents were moved to other zoos shortly after Luna's birth because the Buffalo Zoo closed down the five old bear exhibits, bear pits really, including the polar bear exhibit. The zoo is planning to construct The Arctic Edge, an $18 million new polar bear home, just inside the newly opened new entrance, and has raised $16 million so far. Their deadline for the last two million is in September.

But the bear cubs are growing and soon will need a deeper pool to learn to swim. Luna weighed 140 pounds and Kali weighed 154 pounds in early August. The cubs are weighed every week, and might gain about a pound a day, although Kali has been gaining 10 pounds per week recently. He is a month younger, but is now a lot bigger.
