A fond farewell to Wilhelm

Wilhelm, Willie, or Willy. He was known by many names

One of the most well-known polar bears in the world, 28 year old Wilhelm, has left us.

Einer der bekanntesten Eisbären der Welt, 28-jährige Wilhelm, hat uns verlassen.

Willie started life in the Copenhagen Zoo, born January 11, 1985. He was sold as a cub to an animal handler in Germany, and that is why he has a German name. Not much is known about his life in Germany. He lived a good many years under terrible conditions with other polar bears in the Suarez Brothers Circus, a Mexican Circus. Here they lived in small cages and were given a very poor diet, and hardly any exercise.

Willie begann das Leben im Zoo Kopenhagener, geboren 11. Januar 1985. Er wurde als Jungtier zu an einen Tier -Handler in Deutschland verkauft, und deshalb hat er einen deutschen Namen. Nicht viel ist über sein Leben in Deutschland bekannt. Er lebte zu viele Jahre unter schrecklichen Bedingungen mit anderen Eisbären in der Suarez Bruder-Zirkus, eine mexikanische Circus. Hier lebten sie in kleinen Käfigen und erhielten eine sehr schlechte Ernährung, und hatten kaum Bewegung.

Also known as Willie, or Willy, he enjoyed over a decade of the good life in two American zoos after being rescued from his sad years in the circus. The rescued bears were known as the Suarez Six, although there were at least seven polar bears involved. These bears were confiscated in November 2002 by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service while they were under U.S. jurisdiction in Puerto Rico.

Als Willie bekannt oder auch Willy genannt, genoss er über ein Jahrzehnt das gute Lebens in zwei amerikanischen Zoos, nachdem er von seinem traurigen Jahren im Zirkus gerettet wurde. Die geretteten Bären wurden als Suarez Six bekannt, obwohl es sieben beteiligte Eisbären waren. Diese Bären wurden im November 2002 von der US Fish & Wildlife Service beschlagnahmt, während sie unter US-Gerichtsbarkeit in Puerto Rico waren.

The bears flew through Memphis and went to three zoos. Wilhelm and another male bear Masha went to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. Masha also had compromised health because of the poor treatment by the circus. Wilhelm, now called Willie or Willy, had bonded with Masha in the circus, and they remained fast friends at the Asheboro zoo. After Masha died in 2007, Willie pretty much lived alone until he moved two years ago to the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.

Die Bären flogen nach Memphis und gingen an drei Zoos. Wilhelm und Masha verbrachte man in dem North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. Masha war auch wegen des Gesundheitszustandes wegen der schlechten Behandlung durch den Zirkus gefährdet. Wilhelm, jetzt genannt Willie oder Willy, hatte mit Masha im Zirkus verbunden sind, und sie blieben gute Freunde am Asheboro Zoo. Wherever he was, Willy was very good at having fun, and liked to show off for his fans at the zoo. He was something of a superstar.

Photographer Valerie Abbott fell in love with Willy, and spent many hours in his company, enjoying his antics and playing camera games with the big guy. We are lucky to have so many incredible pictures of the distinctive-looking Willy, thanks to Valerie.

Upon hearing of his death, Valerie was heartbroken. She shares a few of her thoughts here:

“Why was Willy so special you may ask. To begin with he was rescued from a Mexican traveling circus and had to live in terrible conditions. When he and another bear arrived at the North Carolina Zoo they were in bad health. Through much time and patience their caregivers nursed them back to health.

“From that time on Willy loved to show off for humans. He loved to hear the squeal of young children when he would swim towards the glass they were behind. He would grab his big black ball, which weighed about 50lbs, and toss it like it was a basketball. He may next find a giant plastic pickle or even a Pepsi crate (For some odd reason he preferred Pepsi to Coke). The zoo even installed a snow making machine to let him enjoy the cold.

“During the winter months there were plenty of Mondays, my volunteer day, that it was just the two of us. These were very special times as he would locate me and swim towards me and play with unbridled joy. I spent hours with him and was fortunate to capture so many of these times with photos and some video. Willy became famous through my lens making friends and fans worldwide.

“When he left our zoo while the exhibit was being enlarged, I made the journey twice to Milwaukee to visit him.

“It's doubtful many people will understand my connection with this particular bear but he touched my heart like no other.”

To her special bear friend, Valerie says, “Thank you Willy for bringing such joy to me and so many others. May you rest in peace,”

Nach der Mittelung von seinem Tod, war Valerie untröstlich. Sie teilt ein paar ihrer Gedanken hier:

"Warum war Willy so besonders war werden Sie fragen. Zunächst ist er aus einem mexikanischen Wanderzirkus gerettet wurde und musste unter schrecklichen Bedingungen leben. Als er und ein anderer Bär an der North Carolina Zoo ankamen, waren beide Bären in einem schlechten Gesundheitszustand. Durch viel Zeit und Geduld ihrer Betreuern pflegten sie die Eisbären wieder gesund.

"Von diesem Zeitpunkt an wurde Willy von den Menschen geliebt geliebt. Er genoss es, das Quietschen von kleinen Kindern zu hören, wenn er an dem Glasfenster beim Schwimmen zu sehen war. Er würde seine große, schwarzen Kugel greifen, die etwa 50 pounds gewogen hat, und dann warf er sie wie einen Basketball. Alsnächstes fand er eine riesige Gurke aus Kunststoff oder sogar eine Kiste Pepsi (Aus irgendeinem Grund, den nur Willy weiß, bevorzugt er Pepsi statt Coke). Der Zoo installierte sogar eine Beschneiungsanlage, damit er die Kälte geniessen konnte.

"In den Wintermonaten gab es viele Montage, mein ehrenamtlicher Tag, dass nur

wir beide ganz allein waren. Dieses waren sehr besonderen Zeiten, wenn er mich finden würde um auf mich zu zu schwimmen und spielte mit ungezügelter Freude. Ich erbrachte Stunden mit ihm und hatte das Glück, so viele von diesen Zeiten mit Fotos und einige Video- Aufnahmen festzuhalten. Willy wurde durch meine Linse berühmt, Freunde und Fans aus aller Welt.

"Nachdem er unsere Zoo verlassen Hatte, während die Aussenlage vergrößert wurde, machte ich die Reise zweimal nach Milwaukee, um ihn zu besuchen.




Es is etwas schwierig zu verstehen, veile Menschen werden meine Vergindung mit diesem speziellen Bären nicht einfach nachvollziehen können aber er hat mein Herz berührt wie kein anderer." 




Zu ihrem besonderen Bären Freund,Valerie sagt: "Danke an Willy. Du hast anderen und mir so viel Freud geschenkt. Mögest du in Frieden ruhen."

In 2011, when work started on building a new polar bear facility in the Asheboro Zoo, Willie moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.

Here he met the aristocratic Snow Lilly, who had rejected her previous mate Zero. Zero was sent to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY, and Willie was invited to move in with Snow Lilly.

Hier traf er auf die adlige Snow Lilly, die ihrem früheren Kumpel Null abgelehnt hatte. Null wurde an den Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY geschickt, und Willie wurde eingeladen, sich mit Snow Lilly zu bewegen.

Willy had been happy at the Milwaukee County Zoo, but his arthritis had given him trouble in recent years. Willie also had the addition burden of having been “declawed” because he swiped at someone in his circus days.

Sweet Lady Patches is the Queen of the Erie Zoo. She is going to be 26 years old on November 29.

Süße Dame Patches ist die Königin des Erie Zoo. Sie wird 26 Jahre alt sein am 29. November.

For the past few years, she has enjoyed the use of two enclosures, using the old polar bear enclosure plus sometimes being rotated into the corner spot. She loved sitting on the corner, watching the visitors go by. She is a “People Watcher.”

Während der letzten Jahren hat sie die Verwendung von zwei Bärengehegen genossen, mit dem alten Eisbärengehege und manchmal durch Umzug in die Ecke des anderen Bärengeheges. Sie liebte es, an der Ecke zu sitzen und beobachtete die Besucher beim  Vorbeigehen. Sie ist ein "People Watcher."

But now the black bears from the Akron Zoo have taken over the corner enclosure, and Patches has only the one place with a small pool and a silly useless slide.

 Still, she has a great attitude. She enjoys the playful games with her keepers. She watches her visitors. She enjoys the small pleasures of life, such as a frozen ring of sardines to play with and other enrichment treats.

Dennoch hat sie eine tolle Einstellung . Sie genießt die verspielten Spiele mit ihrem Tierpflger. Sie beobachtet ihre Besucher . Sie genießt die kleinen Freuden des Lebens , wie zum Beispiel mit einem gefrorenen Ring aus Sardinen zu spielen und weitere Anreicherung  mit Leckerbissen.

Patches looks fantastic. Her fur is clean and fluffy, and she isn't plagued with the scabs caused by biting flies two years ago. She still likes to scratch on various corners. She has a cool pool and air conditioned quarters to beat the heat.

Patches sieht fantastisch aus. Ihr Fell ist sauber und flauschig , und sie ist nicht mit den Schorf von Stechfliegen behaftet,welches sie vor  zwei Jahren  sehr geplagt hat . Sie kratzt sich immer noch gerne an verschiedenen Stellen. Sie hat einen kühlen Pool und  ein klimatisiertes  Quartier während der Sommerhitze.

Her pool is small, but the water is clean. Patches enjoys the daily hosing down of her enclosure, playing in the spray. I think the Erie zookeepers make a game of it.

Patches came to the Erie Zoo December 11, 2007 from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, where she lived with her twin sister Bam Bam (officially called Fanny, but everyone calls her Bam Bam). She was 20 at the time, and had lived her entire life with her sister at the zoo in Omaha. She had previously given birth to a cub at the Henry Doorly Zoo, but it did not survive. There were expectations that she would become a mother after the move, but it just never did happen. And now she is alone.

Man hatte  die Erwartungen, dass sie Mutter werden würde nach dem Umzug, aber es  ist nie passieren. Und jetzt ist sie allein.

At the time Patches arrived, the Erie Zoo had just lost Alcor, one of twin brothers, and only Mizar, age 9, was left. It was hoped that Mizar and Patches could have a family. Unhappily, Mizar died a few months later of a ruptured spleen.

Zu der Zeit ,alsbPatches ankam hatte der Erie Zoo nur Alcor, einen der Zwillingsbrüder verloren und  Mizar, 9 Jahre,  war übrig  . Man hoffte, dass Mizar und Patches eine Familie  gründen könnte . Unglücklicherweise starb Mizar ein paar Monate später an einem geplatzten Milz.

Later that year, Norton arrived on loan from the Detroit Zoo. The staff at the Detroit Zoo loved Norton, and hated to see him go. Patches did become pregnant, and in the winter of 2009, Patches gave birth to a stillborn cub. Norton, at age 23, died in early September, 2010, from a hernia, a tear in the abdominal wall. He had lived at the Erie Zoo for two years. Again, the Erie Zoo had hoped that Patches would give the following winter, but that just didn't happen.

Patches and Bam Bam are the only bears still living of the seven cubs raised by the famous breeding pair Olaf and Olga of the Omaha Zoo. Their older sister Mishka died this past May at the Henry Villas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

The polar bear enclosure is old fashioned, and really should be upgraded, but the zoo in general is a treasure for this community, although it is closed for several months in the winter, because Erie gets so much lake effect snow. It is open March through November, and closed for December, January and February.

Polar Bear cub Milak made history when Mother Victoria and her baby's antics were streamed worldwide from Aalborg Zoo in Denmark in the world's first polar bear dencam in December of 2008.

Eisbärbaby Milak schrieb Geschichte, als Mutter Victoria und ihr Baby Eskapaden wurden gestreamt weltweit von Aalborg Zoo in Dänemark in der ersten Eisbären DenCam im Dezember 2008.

An early DNA test showed that the cub was boy. We have just learned the results of a second DNA test. Milak, as it turns out, is a girl!

(Correction: The zoo did not do a second DNA test, but a physical exam by a veterinarian, to confirm that Milak is a female. But the results are the same.)

Eine frühe DNA-Test ergab, dass das Baby ein Männchen war. Wir haben gerade die Ergebnisse einer zweiten DNA-Test gelernt. Milak, wie sich herausstellt, ist ein Mädchen!

Milak was born December 7, 2008, in Aalborg Zoo, to mother Victoria and father Felix (who is now in Nuremburg Tiergarten). The cub was given the name Milak, which is Greenlandic for “stain,” for the dark birthmark on her head. You can still see the mark.

Milak wurde geboren 7. Dezember 2008, im Aalborg Zoo, von  Mutter Victoria und Vater Felix  (dieser ist jetzt  wieder im Tiergarten Nürnberg ). Das Junge erhielt den Namen Milak , die grönländischen Bezeichnung  ist für "Fleck"  wegen  des dunklen *Muttermals * auf dem Kopf  . Man kann  es immer noch genau erkennen.

The zookeepers and others (including me) have suspected for awhile that Milak was not a boy. At almost age 5 years, Milak is small and rather pretty and delicate in her features. Malik is not aggressive, as older male bear cubs are. In fact Milak's mother Victoria chases her cub away and Milak runs away from mum. The zoo, for the most part, keeps Victoria and Milak separate to keep things peaceful. Milak gets along well with the other lady bear, Malik, and has not shown the romantic interest that a four year old boy bear would.

Die Tierpfleger und andere (mich eingeschlossen) haben für eine Weile vermutet, dass Milak nicht ein Junge war. Auch im Alter von fast 5 Jahren, ist Milak klein und ziemlich hübsch und zart in den *Gesichtszügen* . Malik ;die andere weibliche Bärin ist nicht aggressiv, wie vielleicht ältere männliche Jungbären erwarten . In der Tat Milak's Mutter Victoria jagt ihr Junges weg und Milak läuft weg von Mama. Der Zoo, zum größten Teil, hält Victoria und Milak getrennt, um die Dinge friedlich zu gestalten. Milak versteht sich gut mit der anderen Eisbärin Malik, und hat nicht das romantische Interesse, dass ein vier Jahre alter Junge eventuel hätte zeigen können.

The keepers were trying to see if the three bears could get along. 

Milak is afraid of Victoria. The barrier between the two enclosures is usually closed, but the keepers have been experimenting to see if  the three bears could live together in peace. Bossy Victoria seems to be saying "no way."

Aalborg Zoo may need to send the bears to another zoo temporarily in order to make repairs to the enclosure, and Milak may move to another zoo permanently, so it was time to find out.

During the time Milak was unconscious, the veterinarian fixed a broken tooth and removed a splinter from her mouth. The keepers and the veterinarian also took a look to see whether Milak was a girl or boy.

Während der Zeit Milak bewusstlos war, fixiert der Tierarzt einen gebrochenen Zahn und entfernt einen Splitter aus dem Maul .  Die Pfleger und der Tierarzt riskierten auch einen Blick um zu sehen, ob es ein Mädchen oder Junge war.

The results are back. Milak is a girl. This is very good news, because it means that Miss Milak has many zoos who would be happy to giver her a home. It is harder to find a place for a boy bear. Milak is now an important part of the polar bear breeding program.

Die Ergebnisse sind zurück. Milak ist weiblichen Geschlechts.  Dies ist eine sehr gute Nachricht , denn es bedeutet, dass es für  Milak nun viele  Zoos geben kann, die ihr ein Heim  werden können . Es ist immer sehr schwieriger, einen Platz für einen männlichen Eisbär zu  finden. Milak ist nun seit heute ein wichtiger Teil des Eisbären Zuchtprogramms geworden

 After Mother Victoria rejected Milak, she found a new family with Malik and her daughter Augo. The cubs Milak and Augo were happy playmates, and Malik allowed the older cub to play with her cub.
 At thetime, the zoo believed that both cubs were boys.

Milak is the half-sister of the famous Flocke, and the twins Gregor and Aleut, born in Nuremburg Tiergarten but now the popular stars of the Warsaw Zoo. Milak's half sister Augo, who was also mistakenly thought to be a boy, died in a tragic accident at Aalborg Zoo last spring, and is greatly missed. Milak and Augo were great playmates, and had a lot of fun together.

Milak ist die Halbschwester der berühmten *Flocke *, und der Zwillinge *Gregor und Aleut* im Nürnberger Tiergarten geboren, aber jetzt sind die beliebten Stars  umgezogen in den Warschauer Zoo in Polen. Milak 's  Halbschwester Augo , von dem auch fälschlicherweise gedacht wurde , ein Junge zu sein ,  Augo starb bei einem tragischen Unfall im Aalborg Zoo im letzten Frühjahr  am 4.Mai 2013 und wird sehr vermisst. Milak und Augo waren großartige  Spielkameraden, und hatten  immer eine Menge Spaß zusammen.

Milak is also famous for her creative use of toys, and there are some popular vides on You-Tube of Milak playing with tubes, tires, and buckets. She is a You-Tube sensation.

Wolodja is the new star of Tierpark Berlin

Meet Wolodja – the new kid in town. Almost two years old, he's the star attraction at Tierpark Berlin, which is also home to a young lady bear named Tonja. It is hoped that Wolodja and Tonja will someday fall in love, and produce cubs.

Treffen mit Wolodja - das neue Kind in der Stadt. Fast zwei Jahre alt,  ist  er der Star im Tierpark Berlin, der auch die Heimat einer jungen Eisbärdame namens  Tonja ist . Es bleibt zu  hoffen , dass Wolodja und Tonja eines Tages Gefallen an einander finden , und Nachwuchs produzieren .

Wolodja was born November 27, 2011 in Moscow. His mother is Simona and his father is the wild-born Vrangel, who came from Vrangel Island. Wolodja is therefore the brother of 11 year old Vera of of Nuremburg Tiergarten, and the uncle of Vera's children, Flocke, Gregor and Aleut.

Wolodja wurde  am 27. November 2011 in Moskau geboren . Seine Mutter ist Simona und sein Vater ist der in der  Wildnis  geborene Vrangel , der  von der Insel Vrangel kam. Wolodja ist daher der Bruder des 11-jährigen Vera von der Nürnberger Tiergarten, und der Onkel von Vera 's Kindern , Flocke, Gregor und Aleut.

This adorable little guy arrived at Tierpark Berlin on August 8, 2013, and stole the hearts of every visitor. I visited him on Thursday, August 29.

Dieser entzückende kleine Kerl kam nach Berlin in  den Tierpark Berlin am 8. August 2013, und stahl die Herzen eines jeden Besuchers. Ich besuchte ihn am Donnerstag 29. August 2013.

Wolodja can't decide -- inside or out.

I was a little disappointed that because Wolodja is such a star, the other bears, Tonja, and the older Aika and Troll, were not out. Tierpark Berlin has only the one enclosure, so the bears must be rotated for the public, and the other bears stay inside while Wolodja meets his fans. I have learned that Tonja and Wolodja were introduced to each other a few days ago, and are becoming friends. Now Wolodja will have a playmate.

Ich war ein wenig enttäuscht:Während Wolodja wie ein Star behandelt wird, waren die anderen Bären: Tonja, und die ältere Aika und Troll , nicht zu sehen.  Tierpark Berlin hat nur das eine Eisbärengehege, so dass die Bären immer im Wechsel  in die Öffentlichkeit  kommen, und somit   bleiben die anderen Bären im Inneren , während Wolodja seine Fans trifft .Ich habe nun gelernt, dass Tonja und Wolodja vor ein paar Tagen gemeinsam auf die Anlage kamen ,  und nun beginnen werden  Freunde zu werden. Jetzt  hat Wolodja einen Spielkameraden. Tonja ist fast vier Jahre alt. Und sie vertragen sich recht gut .

Wolodja does indeed know his name, and when the zookeeper calls, he comes running. He is a playful little bear, but the current philosophy of the old fashioned zoo director in Berlin forbids balls and other toys. The good news is that a new director has just been announced, and this policy will change next year, hopefully.

Wolodja kennet  schon  seinen Namen , und wenn die Tierpfleger rufen , kommt er gelaufen. Er ist ein verspielter kleiner Bär, aber die aktuelle Philosophie des altmodische Zoodirektor in Berlin verbietet Bälle und andere Spielsachen. Die gute Nachricht ist, dass ein neuer Direktor  gerade angekündigt wurde , und diese Politik wird sich ändern nächstes Jahr, hoffentlich..

Wolodja  schwimmt gerne  und klettert auf den Felsen . Er hat einiges  zum Spielen , unter Anderem Baumscheiben und Holzstücke.

There are two zoos in Berlin, sharing the same director. Zoo Berlin, or the Zoologischer Garten Berlin, the home of the famous late Knut, is the historical zoo of Berlin, but this is not where Wolodja lives. Wolodja's home, Tierpark Berlin, was built as a park for the residents of East Berlin during the time of the GDR, when the city and the country were divided. It has barely been changed since it was built in the early 1950s, and is harder to get to than the centrally located Berlin Zoo. However, it does have lots of space to work with.

Es gibt zwei Zoos in Berlin, die sich im selben Regisseur. Zoo Berlin, der Heimat des berühmten Knut spät, ist das historische Zoo von Berlin, aber das ist nicht, wo Wolodja Leben . Wolodja zu Hause, Tierpark Berlin, wurde als Park für die Bewohner von Ost-Berlin während der Zeit der DDR gebaut , als die Stadt und das Land geteilt wurden. Es hat sich kaum verändert , da es in den frühen 1950er Jahren gebaut wurde, und ist schwieriger zu erreichen als die zentral gelegenen Berlin Zoo. Allerdings hat es viel Platz zum arbeiten.

When the new director takes over the zoos, great changes and improvements are expected. And Wolodja will be there to see the new Tierpark Berlin grow up around him, and hopefully, he will get some fun toys to play with.

Wenn der neue Direktor über den Zoos dauert, sind große Veränderungen und Verbesserungen erwartet. Und Wolodja wird es sein zu sehen, der neue Tierpark Berlin aufwachsen um ihn herum, und hoffentlich wird er einige lustige Spielzeug um zu spielen.
