Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich is mourning the loss of its 17 year old polar bear man Yoghi. With is silly ways and playful personality, he won the hearts of everyone who met him.

Der Tierpark Hellabrunn in München trauert um den Verlust des nur 17 Jahre alten Eisbären namens Yoghi. Mit seinem verrückten Wesen und seiner spielfreudigen Art hat er die Herzen von allen, die ihn trafen, gewinnen können.

Yoghi was the father of young Miss Q, or Quintana as she has been named, only five months old. He and Giovanna are also the parents of 3 year twins Nela and Nobby, who are now living in the Netherlands and Great Britain.

Yoghi ist der Vater von Miss Q, oder wie sie nun benannt wurde Quintana, sie ist fünf Monate alt. Giovanna und Yoghi sind auch die Eltern von Nela und Nobby, drei Jahre alte Zwillinge, die nun in den Niederlanden und in Großbrittanien zu Hause sind.

He was also the father of 10 year old Blizzard, who lives in Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg.

Over the past weekend, Yoghi was treated for a bleeding wound which would not heal. The veterinarians ran blood tests and found that he was in kidney failure. They kept him inside and treated him, but yesterday, his condition worsened, and he passed away.

Während des vergangenen Wochenendes wurde bei Yoghi eine blutende Wunde, die nicht heilen wollte behandelt. Die Tierärzte machten Bluttests, und da fand man heraus dass er an Nierenversagen litt. Man behielt ihn im Inneren der Anlage und behandelten ihn auch, aber gestern wurde es schlimmer und Yoghi starb.

He was a popular fellow with his visitors, for Yoghi was always doing something interesting, it seems. He loved his toys, and playing in the water. He was quite a character.

Er war ein sehr beliebter Eisbär bei den Besuchern, es schien als hätte Yoghi immer etwas Interessantes zu tun. Er liebte seine Spielsachen und tobte auch gern im Wasser. Er war schon ein Eisbär mit Charakter.

He also was a very gentle bear, good natured and happy most of the time.  He loved his Giovanna and she loved him.

Er war auch ein sehr freundlicher Eisbär, mit gutmütigem Naturell und meistens auch sehr zufrieden. Er liebte seineGiovanna und sie liebte ihn.

In 2014, Yoghi spent the summer in Wilhelma Zoo in nearby Stuttgart, and made many friends there too, although he was not as popular with the female bear, Corinna.

Yoghi verbrachte er den 2014 Sommer in der Wilhelma in Stuttgart, und fand auch dort viele Freunde, obgleich er bei der dort lebenden Eisbärin Corinna nicht so beliebt war.

Yoghi enjoyed his seven months in Stuttgart

After being away for seven months, Yoghi has returned to his family in Zoo Hellabrunn in Munich.

Nachdem er sieben Monaten fort war ist Yoghi in den Zoo Hellabrunn in München zurückgekehrt zu seiner Familie.

Meanwhile, Mother Giovanna has been raising Nobby and Nela in Munich

 Giovanna, who is almost 8 years old, gave birth to twins Nela and Nobby in December.

Giovanna, die fast 8 Jahre alt ist, brachte im Dezember 2013 Zwillinge zur Welt – Nela und Nobby.

When Polar Bear Anton died tragically in nearby Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart, Yoghi was taken there on March 12, so Giovanna could spend time with the babies in peace, and 14 year old Yoghi and 24 year old Corinna could keep each other company.

Als der Eisbär Anton auf tragische Weise in der Wilhelma in Stuttgart starb, wurde am 12. März 2014 beschlossen, daß Giovanna in Ruhe Zeit verbringen soll mit den Jungtieren, und so wurde der 14 Jahre alten Yoghi verlegt um der 24 Jahre alte Corinna Gesellschaft zu leisten.

Yoghi has enjoyed in time at the Wilhelma Zoo. Visitors have noticed how relaxed he has been.

 Except for a short time during Spring's mating season, Corinna and Yoghi tended to spend their time apart. Yoghi entertained himself very nicely.

Bis auf eine recht kurze Zeit, während der Paarungszeit im Frühling, waren Corinna und Yoghi geneigt, ihre Zeit meistens auseinander zu verbringen. Yoghi unterhielt sichauch allein sehr gut.

It will be nice to be alone again, says Corinna. Peace and quiet.

Yoghi is separated from his family for now. There are two large enclosures at Hellabrunn, and a solid door between them. The staff at the zoo may consider letting Yoghi be with Giovanna and the twins, if Giovanna accepts that idea. It will all be up to her.

Yoghi wird bislang noch von seiner Familie getrennt gehalten. Es gibt zwei große Gehege in Hellabrunn, und eine feste Tür ist zwischen ihnen. Die Mitarbeiter im Zoo lassen prüfen, ob sich Yoghi mit Giovanna und den Zwillingen verträgt, wenn Giovanna diese Idee annimmt. Es hängt alles von ihr ab.

This is almost never even considered, but Yoghi is a gentle laid back bear. Giovanna was raised at the zoo in Fasano Italy where mother Marissa and father Felix (the Italian Felix) lived as a family together with cubs.

Yoghi is a sociable bear. He loves playing with his Giovanna. But they have been separated since last fall, and she gave birth in December to twins, a boy and a girl.

Yoghi ist ein geselliger Bär. Er liebt das Spiel mit seinem Giovanna. Aber sie sind seit Herbst letzten Jahres getrennt, und Giovanna gebar im Dezember Zwillinge, ein Junge und ein Mädchen.

Yoghi has been lonely. Zoo Hellabrun  in Munich, home to 14 year old Yoghi and 7 year old Giovanna, has considered the unusual move to have Yoghi no longer separated from the mother and cubs, and he would help raise them as a family group. This is almost never even considered, but Yoghi is a gentle bear, and Giovanna was raised at the zoo in Fasano Italy where mother Marissa and father Felix (the Italian Felix) lived as a family together with cubs.

Corinna is now a grieving widow

Sadly, another option became available. It has been a month since wonderful Anton died at Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart, and his widow 24 year old Corinna has missed him. Corinna and Anton had been together for over 23 years.

Leider steht nun eine weitere Option zur Verfügung. Es war vor einem Monat, als der wunderbare Eisbär Anton starb im Zoo Wilhelma in Stuttgart, und seine Witwe 24-jährige Corinna vermisst ihn sehr. Corinna und Anton waren seit 23 Jahren zusammen.

Anton died because he ate a backpack, a doll and a jacket in January. The materials caused intestinal infection. Because of the actions of visitors, Corinna lost her beloved Anton.

Anton starb, weil er ein Rucksack, eine Puppe und eine Jacke fraß im Januar. Die Materialien verursacht Darm-Infektion. Durch die Unachtsamkeit der Besucher verlor Corinna ihren geliebten Anton.

Yesterday, March 12, in a surprise move, Yoghi was taken from his home in Munich to Stuttgart, where he is now in the smaller enclosure. He will get to know Corinna through bars, and then they will be together.

Gestern, 12. März, in einem überraschenden Aktion, wurde Yoghi aus seiner Anlage in München nach Stuttgart gebracht, wo er jetzt im kleineren Gehge vorerst bleibt. Er wird sich dort eingewöhnen und Corinna durch ein *Schmusegitter* beschnuppern dürfen, und wenn alles friedlich verläuft werden sie zusammen sein können.

This way, Yoghi will not be alone in the spring, which is breeding season. There is some hope that Corinna, even at age 24, could have another cub.

Auf diese Weise, Yoghi werden nicht allein in den Frühling, die Brutzeit wird sein. Es gäbe ebenso etwas Hoffnung, dass Corinna, auch im Alter von 24, ein weiteres Jungtier haben könnte.

Felix lost a lot of weight, because he wouldn't eat because he was so lovesick for Vera, and Vera was busy with the cubs

It was very hard on Felix in the Nuremburg Tiergarten to have Vera close by with their cubs Gregor and Aleut, several years ago. As the zookeepers did in Wilhelma Zoo when Corinna gave birth to Wilbaer in 2007, the zookeepers had to paint the glass between the enclosures so Felix could not see Vera. Felix would not eat any food and became very thin.

Vor einigen Jahren war sehr schwer für Felix im Tiergarten Nürnberg nebenan zu sein, seine Vera in der Nähe mit ihren Jungen Gregor und Aleut. Das machten auch die Tierpfleger im Zoo Wilhelma, als Corinna Wilbaer geboren hatte 2007. Die Tierpfleger bemalten das Glas zwischen den Gehegen, somit konnte Felix seine kleine Familie nicht sehen. Felix nahm kaum Nahrung an und wurde sehr dünn.

Yoghi is a perfect companion for the grieving Corinna. He is gentle and sweet, and he will not mind if she offers to wash his ears every afternoon, as she always did with Anton.

Yoghi ist ein perfekter Begleiter für die trauernde Corinna. Er ist sanft und süß, und er wird vielleicht nichts dagegen haben, wenn sie sich anbietet seine Ohren zu waschen jeden Nachmittag, so wie sie es mit Anton immer tat.

Yoghi's fans in Munich will miss him, but there will be the twins to watch as they play and grow. Yoghi's move is temporary, and he will return to Munich in the fall.

Europe has its first polar bear cubs of the season. Seven year old Giovanna of Tierpark Hellabrunn In Munich, Germany gave birth to twins on December 9.

Europa hat seine ersten Eisbärenkinder der Saison. Sieben Jahre alt Giovanna von Tierpark Hellabrunn in München, Deutschland, warf Zwillinge am 9. Dezember.

This is the third winter Giovanna has denned up, in expectation of cubs, and finally she has the babies.

There are cameras in the den and the birth was filmed in color, although we have only seen a single photo so far.

Giovanna is known as the Italian Beauty

Giovanna, sometimes called the Italian Beauty, is well known as the childhood playmate of the late Knut in the Berlin Zoo. She and Yoghi had moved to Berlin during the construction of the beautiful new polar bear habitat in Munich. While in Berlin, Giovanna lived and played with Knut during those happy times.

Giovanna, manchmal auch als die italienische Schönheit bezeichnet, war in der Kindheit Spielgefährtin des verstorbenen Knut im Berliner Zoo. Sie und Yoghi war während des Umbaus der schönen neuen Eisbärenanlage von München nach Berlin gezogen. Während des Aufenthalts in Berlin, lebte und spielte Giovanna mit Knut in jenen glücklichen Zeiten.

The big swimming and diving pool

Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich has the finest polar bear enclosure I have seen. It has three separate areas, one with a big swimming and diving pool, a center area, and finally a natural grassy Tundra and Taiga area with a little river to play in. The visitors are separated from the bears by glass in all three areas. The bears are given many wonderful toys to play with. This new enclosure was finished in the summer of 2010 and cost 5.2 million Euros. It is 2800 square meters and triples the living space for the polar bears.

Der Tierpark Hellabrunn hat das besten Eisbärengehege,das ich gesehen habe. Es verfügt über drei separate Bereiche, einer mit einem großen Schwimm-und Tauchbecken, einem mittleren Bereich, und schließlich einer natürlichen grasbewachsenen Tundra und Taiga -Bereich mit einem kleinen Fluss zum spielen in. Die Besucher werden von den Bären durch Glas in allen drei Bereichen getrennt. Die Bären wird viel wunderbares Spielzeug zum Spielen gegeben. Diese neue Anlage wurde im Sommer 2010 fertig und kostete 5,2 Millionen Euro. Es ist 2800 Quadratmeter groß und verdreifacht den Lebensraum für die Eisbären.

The new enclosure has two birthing dens and a mother-cub area. The good news for Yoghi is that even though he can't be with Giovanna, he will still have room to play and have fun in another part of the enclosure.

Das neue Eisbärenhaus hat zwei Geburtshöhlen und einen Mutter - Jungtier -Bereich. Die gute Nachricht für Yoghi ist , dass, obwohl er nicht mit Giovanna zusammen sein kann , wird er dennoch mehr Platz haben, in einem anderen Teil der Anlage zu spielen und Spaß zu haben.

I visited Tierpark Hellabrunn in the summer of 2011. I could see that Yoghi and Giovanna have a wonderful friendship, and like to play with each other. It is probably hard for Yoghi to be separated from his lovely lady.

Ich besuchte Tierpark Hellabrunn im Sommer 2011. Ich konnte sehen, dass Yoghi und Giovanna eine wunderbare Freundschaft haben und gerne miteinander spielen. Es ist wohl schwer für Yoghi von seiner reizenden Dame getrennt zu werden.

Giovanna was born November 28, 2006 in Fasano Italy, the daughter of Marissa and the Italian Felix. She is the sister of Noel of the Copenhagen Zoo and also sister of Dea and another cub born in 2012.

Giovanna wurde 28. November 2006 in Fasano Italien, der Tochter von Marissa und dem italienischen Felix geboren. Sie ist die Schwester von Noel vom Kopenhagener Zoo und auch die Schwester von Dea und einem weiteren Jungtier im Jahr 2012 geboren.

Thirteen year old Yoghi was born November 29, 2000 in Pistoia Zoo in Tuscany, Italy, which no longer has any polar bears. Yoghi's late father Romeo was born in the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, USA in 1978. There were some inbreeding problems at Pistoia, as Yoghi's father is also the father of Yoghi's mother Bimba. And Yoghi's son Blizzard was born to Yoghi's mother Bimba. Blizzard has a very narrow family tree, with only one grandfather. Even with the inbreeding, Yoghi and Blizzard are both healthy, gentle, goodnatured bears.

Der dreizehn Jahre alte Yoghi wurde 29. November 2000 in Pistoia Zoo in der Toskana, Italien,geboren, der Zoo hält nun keine Eisbären mehr. Verstorbenen Vater Yoghi Romeo wurde in der Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, USA im Jahr 1978 geboren. Es gab einige Probleme in Inzucht Pistoia, wie Yoghi Vater ist auch der Vater von Yoghi Mutter Bimba. Und Yoghi Sohn Blizzard wurde Yoghi Mutter Bimba geboren. Blizzard hat eine sehr schmalen Stammbaum, mit nur einem Großvater. Auch mit der Inzucht, Yoghi und Blizzard sind beide gesunde, sanfet, gutmütige Bären.

Giovanna is known to be more adventurous, and the zoo sometimes calls her a “daredevil.”

These are risky days for the babies, and hopefully, all will go well and we have two little ones to watch grow up in Munich.
