Adieu to Mother Susi, mom to the hybrid bears

Susi

Today, elderly European Brown Bear Susi, best known as mother of the famous hybrid twins Tips and Taps, has ended her journey.  At age 38, she was blind, and suffered from heart complications. In addition her mobility was greatly limited. 

Susi was greatly treasured by Zoo Osnabrück, where she arrived in 1980 as a cub, along with her sister Ossi. She lived there almost her entire life, sharing an enclosure with her sister, a male brown bear, and a pair of polar bears, Sonja and Elvis.  

The beautiful and very famous "chocolate bears," Tips and Taps, were rare hybrids between brown bear and polar bear. They were an "accident," but became a beloved pair for visitors to the zoo in Osnabrück, Germany.
The twins were also studied by scientists.

Sussi gave birth, surprise! in January of 2004 to hybrid bears, a cross between European brown bear and polar bear. Elvis was the father. The zoo had not thought that this was possible at the time. But there they were, silvery little cubs. It was a bit of a scandal at the time, but zoo visitors were enchanted by these beautiful little bears.

Why does the bear live in this back area?

Our old brown bear Susi was born was born in 1979 and is thus very important.

Because of this age, she is almost blind and only a little mobile.

She feels much safer in a restricted area and can always retire to the interior when she needs her rest.

Tips and Taps were a great attraction at the zoo, and lived with silver foxes, who would share their meals. It was a great enrichment for the bears. Since the bears were part European Brown Bear and part polar bear, they shared behaviors and physical features of both. For example, polar bears do not hibernate, but Tips and Taps did.

Sadly, Tips escaped from her enclosure in spring of 2017 on a busy Sunday, and had to be shot.

It has been a tragic week, with the loss of Baby Fritz at Tierpark Berlin, and now Tips, the sister Chocolate Bear at Zoo Osnabrück.


Es war eine tragische Woche, mit dem Verlust von Eisbbärbaby Fritz im Tierpark Berlin und jetzt Tips, die Schwester des Schokoladenbären im Zoo Osnabrück.

We heard the terrible and sudden news that Tonja's cub Fritz in Tierpark Berlin was deathly ill with liver failure on Monday. By that evening, four month old Fritz, who had seemed so healthy just days before, was dead, in spite of the best veterinary care.


Wir hörten die schreckliche und plötzliche Nachricht, dass Tonjas Jungtier Fritz im Tierpark Berlin am Montag mit Leberversagen erkrankt war. Jedoch am Abend war der viermonatige Fritz, der vor wenigen Tagen noch so gesund erschien, trotz der besten tierärztlichen Betreuung tot.

With adorable photos and videos and frequent updates from Tierpark Berlin on Fritz and his parents, the world had fallen in love with this little white fluffball. Fritz was to make his first public appearance on Friday, March 10, but it was not to be. 


Mit entzückenden Fotos und Videos und häufigen Updates vom Tierpark Berlin über Fritz und seine Eltern hatte sich die Welt in diesen kleinen weißen Fluffball verliebt. Fritz sollte am Freitag, den 10.  März, seinen ersten Auftritt machen, aber dazu kam es nicht mehr.

There was sadness mixed with joy around the time of Fritz's birth in November. His twin sister was smaller and weaker, and lived only five days. Not long after Fritz was born, 36 year old Grandma Aika next door to the young bear.


Es war Traurigkeit mit Freude gemischt zu der Zeit von Fritzs Geburt im November. Seine Zwillingsschwester war kleiner und schwächer und lebte nur fünf Tage. Nicht lange nach der Geburt von Fritz verstarb die 36-jährige Oma Aika nebenan in ihrer Behausung.

Fritz developed into a charming and very active little cub, and all of Berlin rejoiced. For four months, we all fell in love with darling Fritz. His loss was so sudden, so heartbreaking. Fritz was with us for such a short time. He was just beginning his life, and now it is over, sadly. There may be other cubs at Tierpark, maybe even next year, but we will never forget little Fritz.


Fritz entwickelte sich zu einem charmanten und sehr aktiven kleinen Jungtier, und ganz Berlin freute sich. Für vier Monate verliebten wir uns alle in Liebling Fritz. Sein Verlust war so plötzlich, so herzzerreißend. Fritz war bei uns aber viel zu kurz. Er hatte sein Leben gerade erst angefangen, und jetzt ist es vorbei, das ist traurig. Es kann wieder andere Jungtiere im Tierpark geben, vielleicht sogar im nächsten Jahr, aber wir werden den kleinen Fritz nie vergessen.

Then on Saturday, while we were still in mourning for Baby Fritz, another German tragedy burst forth with the news that one of the 13 year old hybrid bears, the beautiful and rare Chocolate Bears of  Zoo Osnabrück, had cleverly made her way through a hole and through an electric fence into the fox enclosure next door, and escaped from there. Because they thought the bear a danger to the public, a zoo employee shot her dead. 


Am Samstag, während wir noch um Baby Fritz trauerten, erreichte uns eine weitere deutsche Tragödie mit der Nachricht, dass einer der 13-jährigen Hybridbären, die schönen und seltenen Schokoladenbären des Zoo Osnabrück, sich durch ein Lücke gezwängt hatte, dann durch einen elektrischen Zaun in das Fuchsgehege nebenan gelangte und dann von dort entkommen konnte. Weil sie dachten, der Bär sei eine Gefahr für die Öffentlichkeit, musste  ein Zoo-Angestellter sie leider erschiessen.

 At first we were not sure which bear it was. Then the news came that it was the clever sister Tips who had made her escape, and been shot. This leaves brother Taps alone, with only the silver foxes for company.

 Zuerst war man sich nicht sicher, welcher der Bären es war. Dann kam die Nachricht, dass es die kluge Schwester war, die  entkommen konnte und erschossen werden musste. Das lässt nun ihren Bruder Taps alleine bleiben, jetztr nur in der Gesellschaft der Silberfüchse.

Their father was polar bear Elvis, born in 1979 in the Memphis Zoo in the USA, Their mother was Susi, a European Brown Bear. The birth in January of 2004 was a surprise and an embarrassment for the zoo. Since then, Tips and Taps had become celebrated bears, beloved for their unique history and their beauty, for they are indeed gorgeous, carrying some of the attributes of both kinds of bears. Tips was lighter, more like her father Elvis the polar bear. Taps is darker, more like Susi, the mother brown bear.


Ihr Vater war Eisbär Elvis, geboren 1979 im Memphis Zoo in den USA, ihre Mutter war Susi, ein europäischer Braunbär. Die Geburt im Januar 2004 war eine Überraschung und eine Peinlichkeit für den Zoo. Seitdem waren Tips und Taps gefeiert Bären, geliebt für ihre einzigartige Geschichte und ihre Schönheit, denn sie sind in der Tat wunderschön, tragen einige der Attribute der beiden Arten von Bären.  They were also very playful, and visitors loved to watch their games, especially the playful Taps. Tips was the one in charge though. She was the alpha bear.


Sie waren auch sehr verspielt, und die Besucher liebten es, ihre Spiele zu beobachten, besonders der spielerische Taps. Tips war aber die Verantwortliche. Sie war der Alpha-Bär.

The event in Osnabrück brings back the terrible episode in the Cincinnati Zoo last summer when beloved Gorilla Harambe, also the star of the zoo, was shot, through no wrongdoing on his part.


Das Geschehen in Osnabrück bringt die schreckliche Episode im Cincinnati Zoo im vergangenen Sommer zurück, als der geliebte Gorilla Harambe, auch der Star des Zoo, erschossen werden musste, auch nicht durch ein Vergehen auf seiner Seite.

This week also saw a terrible story about a rare White Rhino living in a zoo safari park in France, who was shot dead by poachers to steal and profit from his horn. Vince was only 4 years old. Bogus claims of traditional medicine have driven up the price of rhino horn, although it is made of the same material as hair and fingernails, and is of no actual medicinal value.


Diese Woche lasen wir auch eine schreckliche Geschichte über ein seltenes weißes Nashorn, das in einem Zoo-Safaripark in Frankreich wohnte, das Nashorn wurde von Wilderern erschossen, um dann zu stehlen und von seinem Horn zu profitieren. Vince war erst 4 Jahre alt. Gieransprüche der traditionellen Medizin haben den Preis des Nashorns in die Höhe getrieben, obwohl es aus demselben Material wie Haare und Fingernägel besteht und kein wirklicher medizinischer Wert hat.

People love their animals, and there are certain charismatic individuals who are especially dear to us. We want our animals to be safe, and feel that in a zoo, they are safe, but there are no guarantees in life. When we care, we are giving hostages to fate, as the saying goes. But we must go on caring, even if it breaks our hearts.


Die Menschen lieben ihre Tiere, und es gibt bestimmte charismatische Individuen, die uns besonders lieb sind. Wir wollen, dass unsere Tiere sicher sind und das in einem Zoo auch fühlen, sie sind sicher, aber es gibt leider keine Garantien im Leben. Wenn wir uns darum kümmern, machen wir Geiseln zum Schicksal, wie das Sprichwort sagt. Aber wir müssen uns weiterhin kümmern, auch wenn es unsere Herzen zerbricht.

Elvis has left the building. The elderly Elvis polar bear, longtime resident at Gelsenkirchen ZOOM, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8.

Elvis hat das Gebäude verlassen. Die älteren Elvis Eisbär, langjähriger Bewohner in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM, verstarb friedlich am Samstag 8. Juni.

Elvis was born in the Memphis Zoo, Memphis Tennessee, USA, in November of 1979, two years after the death of the original Elvis, and was named in honor of the late King. This cub's parents were Olga and Bruno.

Elvis wurde in Memphis Zoo, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, im November geboren 1979. Es war zwei Jahre nach dem Tod des ursprünglichen Elvis und das Junge wurde zu Ehren des verstorbenen Königs benannt. Dieses cub Eltern waren Olga und Bruno.

When Elvis was a year old, he moved to Zoo Osnabrück in Germany, where he lived happily for many years with lady polar bear Sonja. They did produce cubs, but none survived.

Als Elvis ein Jahr alt war, zog er nach Zoo Osnabrück in Deutschland, wo er glücklich lebte seit vielen Jahren mit Dame Eisbär Sonja. Sie taten produzieren Jungen, aber keiner überlebt.

After 24 years of living together, there was a surprise in January of of 2004. European Brown Bear Susi gave birth to twin cubs that were obviously fathered by Elvis. Tips (the girl) and Taps (the boy) were Hybrids, half Polar Bear, half European Brown Bear. At first the birth of these cubs was something of a scandal and an embarrassment to the zoo, but now Zoo Osnabrück is very proud of their rare and quite beautiful silvery bears, sometimes called Chocolate Bears. Many visitors come to Zoo Osnabrück just to see this unique accidental pair.

Nach 24 Jahren des Zusammenlebens, es war eine Überraschung, im Januar 2004. Europäische Braunbär Susi gebar zwei Jungen, die offensichtlich von Elvis wurden gezeugt. Tipps (das Mädchen) und Taps (der Junge) waren Hybriden, halb Eisbär, halb europäischen Braunbär. Auf den ersten der Geburt dieser Jungen war so etwas wie ein Skandal und eine Schande für den Zoo, aber jetzt Zoo Osnabrück ist sehr stolz auf ihre seltenen und sehr schön silbrig Bären, manchmal auch Schokolade Bears. Viele Besucher kommen, um Zoo Osnabrück, nur um diese einzigartige zufälligen Paar zu sehen.

Elvis moved the Gelsenkirchen ZOOM in June of 2005. For the past eight years, he lived like a king in a luxurious environment in the Gelsenkirchen Zoo with a elderly lady friend, Fanny, who is one year older than Elvis. Elvis loved his carrots.

Elvis zog die ZOOM Gelsenkirchen im Juni 2005. In den vergangenen acht Jahren lebte er wie ein König in einer luxuriösen Umgebung im Zoo Gelsenkirchen mit einer älteren Freundin, Fanny, die ein Jahr älter als Elvis ist. Elvis liebte seine Karotten.

As offspring of Olga and Bruno, Elvis is great uncle to Aurora of the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. Haley, one of Aurora's cubs, is now living in the Memphis Zoo, which is the birthplace of her Great Uncle Elvis. So visitors to the Memphis Zoo can still see relatives of Elvis the King (Polar Bear).

Als Nachkommen von Olga und Bruno, ist Elvis Großonkel zu Aurora des Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. Haley, einer der Aurora Jungen, lebt jetzt in der Memphis Zoo, das ist der Geburtsort von ihrem Großonkel Elvis. So Besucher der Memphis Zoo kann man noch Verwandten Elvis der King (Eisbär).

Elvis had relatives in Europe also. His twin sister C.W. was the mother of Ilka and Nordman (Nuuk), now at the Skandanavian Dierpark. Ilka is the mother of Siku and also new twins this year. Nordman is the father of Huggies' daughter Freedom, who lives at Rhennen. That means Nordman is grandfather of Freedom's cubs Sesi and Siku (now in France) and also Sprinter, now at Hannover. So Elvis had nieces and nephews. A big family.

Elvis hatte Verwandte in Europa auch. Seine Zwillingsschwester CW war die Mutter von Ilka und Nordman (Nuuk), jetzt an der Skandanavian Dierpark. Ilka ist die Mutter von Siku und auch neue Zwillinge in diesem Jahr. Nordman ist der Vater von Huggies Tochter Freedom, die sich Rhennen lebt. Nordman ist Großvater von der Freedom Jungen Sesi und Siku (jetzt in Frankreich) und auch Sprinter, jetzt in Hannover. So hatte Elvis Nichten und Neffen. Eine große Familie.

The magical story of Tips and Taps

This is the story of Tips and Taps (pronounced Tips and Tops), two magical, beautiful and very rare hybrid bears living in Zoo Osnabrück in Germany. They are sometimes called “Chocolate Bears,” for their coloring.

Dies ist die Geschichte von Tipps und Taps, zwei magische, schöne und sehr seltene Hybrid Bären im Zoo Osnabrück in Deutschland. Sie werden manchmal auch als "Chocolate Bears" für ihre Färbung.

Once upon a time there was a tiny little polar bear cub named Elvis. This special cub, the last one born in the Memphis Zoo to date, was born in November of 1979 in the Memphis Zoo to the prolific polar bear parents, Bruno and Olga, and was named after the late, great Memphis resident Elvis Presley, who had died two year earlier.

Once upon a time es war ein kleines Eisbärenbaby namens Elvis. Diese spezielle cub, die letzte in der Memphis Zoo geboren, wurde im November 1979 in der Memphis Zoo der produktivsten Eisbären Vater und Mutter, Bruno und Olga, geboren und wurde nach dem verstorbenen, großartigen Memphis Sänger Elvis Presley, benannt, hatte im Jahr 1977 starb.

Elvis the polar bear cub moved to Zoo Osnabrück in Germany in November of 1980, where he lived with another polar bear lady named Sonja, together with some European Brown Bears, in the same enclosure, strangely enough. Living in this bear commune were European Brown Bear sisters named Susi and Ossi.

Elvis das Eisbärbaby bewegt Zoo Osnabrück in Deutschland im November 1980, wo er mit einem anderen Eisbären Dame namens Sonja wohnte, zusammen mit einigen europäischen Braunbären, im selben Gehäuse, seltsam genug. Das Leben in dieser Bärengehege waren Braunbären Schwestern namens Susi und Ossi.

Tips (the girl) and Taps (the boy) were Hybrids, half Polar Bear, half European Brown Bear. Susi wasn't interested, but her sister Ossi took care of the cubs. A report in a scientific journal reports that the cubs were taken away at some point to be raised by hand so they wouldn't learn behavior from other bears.

Nach 24 Jahren des Zusammenlebens, gab es eine Überraschung für Elvis und Susi (und die Tierpfleger) im Januar 2004. Susi gebar zwei Jungen. Tipps (das Mädchen) und Taps (der Junge) waren Hybriden, halb Polar Bear, halb European Brown Bear. Susi war nicht interessiert, aber ihre Schwester Ossi kümmerte sich um die Jungen. Tips (below) and the darker and bigger Taps (above)

Tips and Taps are smaller than their father, but bigger than their mother. They have the longer necks of polar bears, and tails like polar bears, Their hairs have hollow pockets. They act more like polar bears in how they play and act, say the scientists who have studied them.

Tips und Taps sind kleiner als ihr Vater, aber größer als ihre Mutter. Sie haben die längere Hälse von Eisbären und Schwänze wie Eisbären, haben ihre Haare hohlen Taschen. Sie wirken eher wie Eisbären, wie sie spielen und zu handeln, sagen die Wissenschaftler, die sie studiert haben.

Tips and Taps get many visitors at their home

Tips and Taps have a beautiful place to live at Zoo Osnabrück, and now share their place with a family of Silver Foxes, who have their own enclosure next door, but dart in and out of the bear space through tunnels. The bears and the foxes share feeding time, and it is fun to see the pretty foxes scurry around, getting scraps. The foxes give the bears some fun and interest, but the bears can't catch the foxes, and don't really seem interested in chasing them.

Tips und Taps haben einen schönen Platz zum Zoo Osnabrück leben und teilen sich nun ihren Platz in einer Familie von Silver Foxes, die ihr eigenes Gehege nebenan, aber dart in und aus dem Bären Raum durch Tunnel. Die Bären und die Füchse Aktien der Fütterung, und es macht Spaß zu sehen, die hübschen Füchse rund huschen, immer Fetzen. Tips, the lady bear, is much smaller than her brother, and is almost silver, very light. She almost looks like a Spirit Bear. With a darker line going down her back starting at her shoulders, she is quite beautiful.

Taps stand up while he is waiting for his food at feeding time

Taps is darker, and even though he is bigger, Sister Tips seems to be in charge, at times sending Taps running when she approaches. Taps is a very playful boy. Currently, he has rubbed much of the fur off his lower back from scratching against the rocks.

Bruder Taps ist dunkler, und obwohl er größer ist, scheint Schwester Tips in Rechnung zu stellen, manchmal Senden Taps laufen, wenn sie nahe kommt. Taps ist eine sehr spielerische Junge. Derzeit hat er viel Fell seinen unteren Rücken rieb vor Kratzern gegen die Felsen.



The bears can be seen from almost every angle, thanks to an elevated bridge. They have grass, a waterfall, and pools to swim in. Taps really enjoys playing in the pool. Construction is underway to provide additional viewing windows next year.

Tips and Taps have also become ambassadors of climate change awareness. Since climate change is causing more and more hybrid bears to appear in the wild, scientists are even more interested in studying Tips and Taps.

Tips und Taps haben auch zu Botschaftern des Klimawandels bewusst. Da der Klimawandel verursacht mehr und mehr Hybrid-Bären in der Wildnis erscheinen, sind die Wissenschaftler noch mehr Interessenten an einem Studium Tips und Taps.

Father Elvis moved to Gelsenkirchen ZOOM in June of 2005. Mother Susi still lives at Zoo Osnabrück, in a quiet, set back enclosure. She is elderly and blind, and needs the quiet place, which is between the elephant area and the tiger area.

Vater Elvis zog nach Gelsenkirchen ZOOM im Juni 2005. Mutter Susi lebt im Zoo Osnabrück, in einer ruhigen, zurückversetzt Gehäuse. Sie ist älteren und blind, und braucht die ruhige Lage, die zwischen dem Elefanten und dem Tiger-Bereich ist.

As offspring of Olga and Bruno, Elvis is great uncle to Aurora of the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. Haley, one of Aurora's cubs, is now living in the Memphis Zoo. So visitors to the Memphis Zoo can see a cousin of the famous Tips and Taps.
