It will be the end of an era for the Cincinnati Zoo when Harapan, the 8 year old Sumatran Rhino, leaves this fall to travel to Sumatra, where there are hopes he will breed with a lady rhino named Rosa.

The Cincinnati Zoo held a press conference this morning to announce that 8 year old Harapan will be leaving this fall. The next few weeks will offer a last chance to see this special guy. After he leaves, we will probably never be able to see a Sumatran Rhino again. The permits may take a month or more, and we really don't know when he is leaving. His keepers will start training him to go into a travel crate. Harapan weighs 1800 pounds, and will travel by airplane to his new home and family.

Harapan, who was born at the Cincinnati Zoo, is the last surviving Sumatran Rhino in the Western Hemisphere, and the only one on public display in the world. There are estimates that only about a hundred are left in the world. Almost all are on the island of Sumatra. Harapan will live on Sumatra in Indonesia in a wildlife refuge, where there are three female Sumatran Rhinos, two of breeding age. His older brother Andelas is there already, and has fathered a baby rhino.

The Rhino enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo is spacious, and covered by specially designed canopies to shield Harapan from sun damage. The Rhinos, covered with dark reddish hair, live in a dark rainforest environment in nature. Harapan also has a large wooded area just for him.

He is friendly and playful. Harapan's mother Emi made history when she gave birth to Andelas in 2001. It as the first successful birth of a Sumatran Rhino in a zoo in 112 years. Andelas is now living in Sumatra, where he has already fathered a calf. Emi went on to have two more calves, Emi and Harapan. Emi died in 2009, and Suci died in 2014. Now only Harapan remains.

The Cincinnati Zoo is home to CREW, which has been working very hard on reproductive issues of endangered plants and animals, and especially on the Sumatran Rhino. The Cincinnati Zoo is the only zoo that has successfully bred these Rhinos.

Harapan, one of the last of his kind

With the death of his sister Suci last March, 7 year old Harapan, or "Harry," of the Cincinnati Zoo is the last surviving Sumatran Rhino in the Western Hemisphere. There are only about a hundred left in the world. Almost all are on the island of Sumatra. There are only nine Sumatran Rhinos living in captivity worldwide. The Sumatran Rhino is considered by some to be the most endangered large mammal on earth.

Mit dem Tod seiner Schwester Suci vergangenen März, ist das 7 Jahre alte Harapan im Cincinnati Zoo das letzte überlebende Sumatra-Nashorn in der westlichen Hemisphäre. The Cincinnati Zoo had brought Suci back from the Los Angeles Zoo in a desperate attempt to breed. Even though they are brother and sister, there wasn't much choice. If a female Sumatran Rhino doesn't become pregnant at a fairly young age, she never does, and Suci was 9, old enough to breed. Harapan is only 7, and he won't be of breeding age for another three years. But now there is no one for Harapan.

There are rumors that Harapan will be sent to Sumatra to be with his own kind, and to help with the breeding program.

Harapan is really very good natured

The Sumatran Rhino is the smallest of the five kinds of rhinos. The others are the White, Black, Javan and Indian Rhinos. The Cincinnati Zoo has Black, Indian and Sumatran Rhinos. There are no Javan Rhinos in any zoo in the world, and indeed, the Javan Rhino, may already be extinct. All varieties of Rhinos are endangered due to destruction of their rainforest habitat due to a demand for palm oil, and logging for valuable rainforest wood, and especially because of poachers. Unfortunately, Rhino horn is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and sells for up to $30,000 per kg. It has no actual medicinal value, but people wrongly continue to believe it is an aphrodisiac and has curative powers. The Sumatran Rhino at one time had a very large population spread out over Southeast Asia and India. Now there are only about 100 left.

He is a gentle creature, and his keepers are very fond of him. After all, he was born at the Cincinnati Zoo, and his keeper remember his birth. He is friendly and playful.

Just a few hundred yards away from Harapan's home at the Cincinnati Zoo stands the memorial to Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon.

This building, on the national registry of Historic Places, is the only remaining one of the five Victorian aviaries of the original zoo architecture. It is a tribute to the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon, caused by man. At one time the skies were dark with flocks of these birds, but they were hunted to extinction. September 1, 2014, marks 100 years since the death of Martha, the last of her kind.

Das Gebäude, auf dem nationalen Register of Historic Places, ist das einzige erhaltene der fünf viktorianischen Volieren der ursprünglichen Zoo-Architektur. Es ist eine Hommage an das Aussterben der Wandertaube, welches durch den Menschen verursacht wurde. Like the Passenger Pigeon extinction, the threatened extinction of the Sumatran Rhino is also caused by humans. The Cincinnati Zoo has dedicated many resources to saving the Sumatran Rhino, and much was learned about their reproduction, as shown by the birth of three calves. But is it all too late? Will the Sumatran Rhino, mostly closely related to the extinct Wooley Mammoth, suffer the fate of the Passenger Pigeon and disappear from this earth?

Wie die Wandertaube vom Aussterben bedroht war ist auch die Ausrottung des Sumatra-Nashorn durch den Menschen verursacht. Der Cincinnati Zoo hat viele Ressourcengenutzt, und die Rettung dem Sumatra-Nashorn gewidmet und viel über ihre Reproduktion gelernt, wie die Geburt von drei Kälber bewiesen hat. Aber es ist alles zu spät? Wird das Sumatra-Nashorn, meist eng mit dem ausgestorbenen Wooley Mammoth verbunden, das gleiche Schicksal der Wandertaube erleiden und von der Erde verschwinden?
