The new Heart of Africa Exhibit is home to 11 giraffes

The world famous Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Columbus Ohio has done it again! The zoo has just opened its new 43 acre Heart of Africa exhibit, a magical place designed to give the visitor a vision of what it would be like to look out at the vast savannas of Africa.

Der Zoo hat gerade seine neue 43 Hektar große Anlage * Das Herz von Afrika * gezeigt, ein magischer Ort,der entworfen wurde dem Besucher eine Vorstellung davon zu geben, wie es sein würde, um in den weiten Savannen Afrikas einen Einblick zu geben.

The grand opening on May 22 was made even more special by a visit from TV legend and animal lover Betty White, a longtime family friend of Columbus Zoo Director Emeritus Jungle Jack Hanna, who was also there to cut the ribbon, along with Tom Stalf, President and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Die feierliche Eröffnung wurde sogar speziell durch einen Besuch von TV -Legende und Tierliebhaber Betty White geehrt, sowie einem langjährigen Freund der Familie, der Columbus Zoo -Direktor Emeritus Jungle Jack Hanna, der auch da war, um das Band zu zerschneiden, zusammen mit Tom Stalf, Präsident und CEO des Columbus Zoo und Aquarium.

And the Heart of Africa is open!

Jack surprised Betty with the news that the entrance road to the Heart of Africa will be named Betty White Way, and showed her the sign.

Betty says that zoos are very important to the future of animals living in the wild.

"What we learn about animals in the zoo, they are the ambassadors for the wild communities that almost any species you mention is shrinking, she said. "We're not shrinking. There are plenty of us. But we have to take tender loving care of these incredible creatures that are on this beautiful planet."

Giraffes are everywhere!

The $30 million Heart of Africa, located just past the Polar Frontier, is home to 165 exotic animals. While the three lions, appear to live with the other animals, there are invisible barriers between the various areas.

Diese $30.000.000 Anlage *Herz von Afrika*, gleich hinter der Polar Frontier gelegen, ist die Heimat von 165 exotischen Tieren. Während die drei Löwen, scheinbar mit den anderen Tieren leben, gibt es unsichtbare Barrieren zwischen den verschiedenen Bereichen.

An old jungle airplane rests between the lion enclosure and the public. The children can climb on the front part, and the lions can play with the tail section.

The savanna is home to 11 giraffes: 4 Reticulated Giraffes, and 7 Masai Giraffes, living in two separate areas. Visitors can pay $3 to feed the giraffes.

In the Heart of Africa, there is enough room
 to let the giraffes run, unlike most zoos.

Children can relive the adventures of Jack Hanna by climbing through a jungle aircraft, pretending to drive Jack Hanna's land rover, and visiting Jack's jungle shack, filled with memorabilia, and recreating Jack's experiences with the curious Vervet Monkeys, who regularly raided his camp during his safaris.

The area is also home to Grants zebras, cheetahs, greater kudu, warthogs, guinea fowl, several kinds of gazelles. There are also camels, and for $7 you can ride one of the “ships of the desert.”

Best friends Betty and Jack

Betty first visited the Columbus Zoo in 1979, when the zoo was much smaller. It has grown tremendously under the guidance of Jack Hanna and those who followed him in leading the zoo. She is impressed with how much the zoo has grown. She and Jack and his family have become close friends over the years, and frequently visit each other.

Betty besuchte den Columbus Zoo zum ersten Mal im Jahr 1979, als der Zoo noch viel kleiner war. Es hat enorm verändert und auch gewachsen unter der Leitung von Jack Hanna und all jenen, die ihn in der Führung des Zoos gefolgt sind. Sie ist beeindruckt, um wie viel der Zoo gewachsen ist. Betty, known for her lifelong dedication to animal welfare, was given a tour of the Heart of Africa the previous day, and she said it was one of those rare perfect days.

Betty, für ihren lebenslangen Einsatz für den Tierschutz bekannt ist, wurde eine Führung durch das Herz von Afrika am Vortag gegeben, und sie sagte, es war einer der seltenen perfekten Tage.

It was packed with excited visitors on the first day, with long lines at the entrance, waiting for the 9 a.m. opening and a chance to see Betty White. It will be nice to visit the Heart of Africa again, when it isn't so crowded. It is truly a special place in the heart of Ohio. As Betty said, they should change the name of her show from “Hot in Cleveland” to “Hot in Columbus.”

Qannik grows up

Qannik is getting to be a big girl now.
 Just look at those paws!

Qannik, who turned three years old in January, is now a big girl. She weighs 440 pounds, and towers over her visitors when she stands. She has come a long way from her start as a lost wild bear cub in Alaska.

Qannik, die drei Jahre alt im Januar wurde, ist jetzt ein großes Mädchen. Sie wiegt 440 Pfund, und thront über ihre Besucher, wenn sie steht. Sie ist einen langen Weg von ihrem Start als wilden Bären in Alaska gekommen.

She still lives and plays alone in Glacier Run at the Louisville Zoo. Four year old Siku, who weighs 600 pounds, is nearby in Glacier Run, but separate. Siku is interested in Qannik, the zookeepers say, but Qannik is not interested in Siku yet.

When Qannik is in the bigger enclosure with the pool, she spends most of her time in the water, swimming and playing. Siku, on the other hand, swims for a few minutes and then takes a nap.

They see each other across the hall in the bedrooms, but maybe they will meet face to face this summer.

Siku's "Auntie" Smilla has left us

Lady Smilla, beloved  "auntie" to young Siku

Lady Smilla has died suddenly yesterday at the Scandinavian Animal Park in Kolind Denmark. She was 23 years old. Although she acted well and ate normally in her last days, it was discovered that she had died of a severe liver tumor.

Lady Smilla hat plötzlich gestern im skandinavischen Tierpark in Kolind / Dänemark gestorben. Sie war 23 Jahre alt. Obwohl sie normal verhielt und auch immer Appetit auf ihr Fressen hatte in ihren letzten Tagen, es wurde dann entdeckt, dass sie an einem schweren Lebertumor gestorben ist.

She was born in Budapest, and named Lady. She spent 20 years there in an old fashioned concrete enclosure. Three years ago, she came to Denmark and was renamed Smilla. She was not used to grass and space and other bears, and had a habit of pacing back and forth.

Sie wurde in Budapest geboren und man nannte sie dort Lady. Sie verbrachte 20 Jahre in einem altmodischen Betonboden Gehege. Vor drei Jahren kam sie nach Dänemark und wurde in Smilla umbenannt. Sie war nicht gewohnt auf Gras zu laufen und die Weite und anderen Bären machten sie ängstlich, und sie hatte lange die Angewohnheit hin und her zu laufen.

 The park staff tried to introduce her to the other polar bears, but she retreated to a corner and would not respond, even to food. So she spent her time alone in a secluded private grassy area with a pool.

Das Park Personal versuchte, sie den anderen Eisbären vorzustellen, aber sie zog sich in eine Ecke zurück und reagieren nicht, auch nicht auf auf Futter als Lockmittel. So verbrachte sie ihre Zeit allein auf einer abgelegenen privaten Grünfläche mit Pool.

 Young Siku spent his nights in the same barracks,
and the two bears got to know each other.

Young Siku was kept in the same area during the night, and he and Smilla became friendly.

 Later on, Siku and Smilla would share the same enclosure, and she taught him how to be a polar bear. They played together and ate near each other.

 Später, Siku und Smilla teilten sich das das gleiche Gehege, und sie hatte ihn gelehrt, wie man ein Eisbär sein muss. Sie spielten zusammen und fraßen in der Nähe von einander.

Last fall, Siku was reunited with his mother Ilka and made friends with his little brother and sister. Smilla was alone again, but she probably enjoyed the peace and quiet. The park had planned to introduce Smilla to the family of bears very soon, but she is gone now.

Im vergangenen Herbst wurde Siku mit seiner Mutter Ilka wieder zusammen gelegt und freundete sich mit seinen Geschwister an. Wieder war Smilla allein, aber sie hat wahrscheinlich die Ruhe genossen. Der Park hatte geplant, Smilla zu der Familie der Bären sehr bald vorzustellen, aber nun ist sie für immer weg.

It is sad that she had to spend her first 20 years in a concrete zoo, but she was able to enjoy three years on the grass, and had many happy days with Siku. Smilla will be missed.

Es ist traurig, dass sie ihre ersten 20 Jahre in einem Betonboden Zoogehege verbringen mußte, aber sie war in der Lage drei Jahren auf dem Rasen zu genießen, und hatte viele glückliche Tage mit Siku. Smilla wird uns fehlen.
