Shy Aurora comes out for feeding time

It is usually up to the playful Zero to entertain visitors of the Rocky Coasts at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, New York. The beautiful but elusive Aurora comes out for enrichment time and then disappears again.

Aurora finds a fishy snack

Aurora was born November 5, 1989, in Salt Lake City, and has had had four cubs already: daughter Anoki in 1996, twins Lee (boy) and Anana (girl) in 1999, and daughter Hayley in 2002, all with the late Yukon. Anoki now lives in Baltimore. Lee lives in Denver. Anana lives in Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, and Hayley lives in Memphis.

Aurora prefers the privacy and cooler temperatures of her bedroom, so it is a rare opportunity to see her. Zero, on the other hands, takes his naps outside. He loves to play in the pool, or just sit under the pounding waterfall. And there are usually plenty of toys to play with, and a floating plastic iceberg in the pool.

Aurora

Zero, who was born to Mishka (sister of Patches and Bam Bam) in the Milwaukee Zoo on December 14, 1989, gained worldwide fame for his adventure when, while playing with a toy, he fell into a safety net in an 18 foot deep moat in his enclosure in the Milwaukee County Zoo in October of 2008. He stayed down in the moat for 18 days this time, and garnered worldwide attention, as many sent in suggestions as to how to lure him out of the moat. There were daily news stories on Zero and his status. Zero had done the same thing some years earlier, when he took a week to climb the stairs out of the moat.

Zero, der von Mischka (Schwester von Patches und Bam Bam) im Zoo von Milwaukee am 14. Dezember 1989 geboren wurde, gewann Weltruhm für seine Abenteuer, als erbeim Spielen mit einem Spielzeug in ein Sicherheitsnetz fiel. That second time, even though zookeepers had given him half rations of food in the hopes of luring him out because of hunger, Zero showed no interest in leaving the moat, the zookeepers finally had to anesthetize him and lift him out with a crane.

Beim zweiten Mal haben die Tierpfleger ihm die Hälfte der Lebensmittelrationen gekürzt in der Hoffnung, ihn locken zu können, weil er Hunger bekommen könnte, aber Zero zeigte kein Interesse an dem Verlassen des Wassergrabens, somit hatten die Tierpfleger schließlich beschlossen, ihn zu betäuben und ihn aus dem Graben mit einem Kran zu heben.

Zero, who was named for the outside temperature on the day he was born, moved to the Seneca Park Zoo in January of 2010, after four years of living with Snow Lilly in Milwaukee and producing no cubs. Snow Lilly had given Zero the cold shoulder, and there was really no romance there. It was hoped that Aurora in the Seneca Park Zoo would find Zero more attractive, and produce cubs.

Aurora and Zero were chosen to be the first to take part in a groundbreaking scientific study of polar bear artificial insemination in 2012. A team of scientists from CREW (Center for the Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife) traveled from Cincinnati to Rochester to collect sperm samples from Zero, and to use a flexible endoscope to make a deposit in Aurora's uterus. So Aurora has earned a place in polar bear history as the first bear to experience artificial insemination. They were chosen because Aurora has already been a mother, and she had been with Zero for several years without getting pregnant.

Aurora und Zero wurden ausgewählt, um die ersten Teil nahmer an einer bahnbrechenden wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der Eisbären bezüglich künstlicher Befruchtung im Jahr 2012 teilzunehmen. All were hoping that this would improve Aurora's chances of having cub with Zero. However, that did not happen. CREW scientists tried artificial insemination for a second time with one of the bears from Sea World San Diego, and again that did not work. The procedure requires that both bears involved be anesthetized, which has some risk, but much was learned about polar bear hormones and reproduction. In addition, sperm from the experiment has been cryogenically frozen and is part of the Frozen Zoo at CREW.

Alle hofften, dass Auroras Chancen, Jungtiere mit Zero zu haben verbessern würden. Doch das ist nicht geschehen. Heading up the CREW trials and also breaking ground in the detection of polar bear pregnancy is Dr. Erin Curry, CREW Reproductive Physiologist. I got to chat with her at CREW at the Cincinnati Zoo a few weeks ago. She is excited about the Beagle Elvis (who lives in Kansas) and his ability to detect pregnancy from sniffing polar bear poop. In fact, zoos from all over the country ship their polar bear poop to the Cincinnati Zoo for analysis by CREW.
  

Zuständig für die CREW Versuche und auch dem ersten Feldversuch bei der Erkennung von Eisbären-Schwangerschaft ist Dr. Erin Curry, CREW Reproduktions Physiologe. Ich habe mich mit ihr bei CREW im Cincinnati Zoo vor ein paar Wochen unterhalten. Aurora and Zero get along well, and there is still hope for cubs naturally from these two, although both bears are now 24 years old. The window on fertility for Aurora is closing.

Aurora und Zero kommen gut miteinander zurecht, und es gibt noch Hoffnung auf natürlichem Weg, Nachwuchs zu zeugen, obwohl beide Bären sind jetzt 24 Jahre alt. Das Ende der Fruchtbarkeit für Aurora ist absehbar.

The polar bear population in American zoos has now dropped to 58. CREW will continue to study polar bear fertility, in the hopes of improving chances of pregnancy and pregnancy detection, which will hopefully help our bears to have more healthy cubs.

Die Eisbärenpopulation in den amerikanischen Zoos ist nun auf 58 gesunken. CREW wird weiterhin die Fruchtbarkeit der Eisbären untersuchen, in der Hoffnung auf Verbesserung der Chancen auf eine Schwangerschaft und Schwangerschaftserkennung, die hoffentlich helfen kann unsere Bären zu gesunden Jungtieren zu verhelfen.

During my visit this month to the Toledo Zoo, I was surprised to see that little boy Sakari is almost as big as his mother Crystal. His sister Suka is still small. All three are very active. Mom Crystal often joins in to play with her cubs.

Bei meinem Besuch in diesem Monat im Toledo Zoo, war ich überrascht zu sehen, dass der kleine Eisbär Sakari schon fast so groß wie seine Mutter Crystal. Seine Schwester Suka ist noch klein. Alle drei sind sehr aktiv. Mom Crystal oft schließt sich mit ihren Jungen an um zu spielen.

I saw that little Suka is very independent. She also likes to play with multiple toys at once, and spends a lot of her time swimming.

Ich sah, dass Suka sehr unabhängig ist. Sie mag auch mit mehreren Spielsachen auf einmal zu spielen, und verbringt viel Zeit schwimmen zu gehen.

Suka and Sakari were born November 21, 2012, so they are 20 months old now, and well on their way to being grown up. Their brother Siku was about this age when he left his mother to move to the Louisville Zoo.

Suka und Sakari sind nun auf ihrem Weg erwachsen zu werden. Geboren am 21. November 2012, so dass sie jetzt gut 20 Monate alt sind. Ihr Bruder Siku war auch in diesem Alter, als er seine Mutter verließ um in den Louisville Zoo umzuziehen.

On the day of my visit, Nan and Marty were in the public habitat most of the day. About 3 p.m., Nan and Marty went inside and Crystal and her cubs came out to play.

Am Tag meines Besuches waren Nan und Marty fast den ganzen Tag im Außengehege. Gegen 15.00 Uhr gingen Nan und Marty hinein in den Innenbereich und Crystal und ihre Jungen kamen nach draußen, um zu spielen.

Crystal and the cubs had fish to find in the habitat, and quickly found the smaller ones. They do not seem to like the bigger fish.

At the end of the day, Crystal led Suka into the quieter room, and Sakari soon followed. The cubs settled down to sleep. Sakari wanted milk, but Crystal said no. As the cubs fell asleep for their nap, Suka kept biting her brother, but finally the two fell asleep together, and Crystal could have some time to herself.

The Toledo Zoo is home to five polar bears these days, who enjoy the gorgeous habitat in the Arctic Encounter in two rotation groups. When Crystal and her twins are enjoying the backyard of the exhibit, we can see Marty and Nan playing and swimming and sleeping, almost always separately.

Der Toledo Zoo ist die Heimat von fünf Eisbären in diesen Tagen, welche den wunderschönen Lebensraum in The Arctic Encounter in zwei Rotationsgruppen genießen. Marty is the proud father of Crystal's twins, Suka and Sakari, as well as four other cubs, all born at the Toledo Zoo.

17 year old Marty was born at the Brookfield Zoo His father Aussie (who just celebrated his 29th birthday) still lives at Brookfield, but his mother Arki died last year at the Louisville Zoo. Marty is a massive bear, like his father Aussie. Marty is brother to Hudson of the Brookfield Zoo and Payton of the Memphis Zoo.

Nanuyaak, or Nan for short, was born in the wild in Alaska in 1994. After four months in the Alaska Zoo, the cub moved to Tacoma, Washington. Nan came to the Toledo Zoo in 2001.

Nanuyaak oder auch Nan abgekürzt, wurde in der Wildnis in Alaska im Jahr 1994 geboren. Nach vier Monaten im Alaska Zoo, wurde das Jungtier nach Tacoma, Washington verlegt. Nan kam in den Toledo Zoo im Jahr 2001.

The Arctic Encounter opened in 2000. Previous to that time, the Toledo polar bears lived in the grotto where the tigers now live, in the historic southern part of the zoo.

The Arctic Encounter wurde im Jahr 2000 eröffnet. Vor dieser Zeit lebte die Eisbären in der Grotte, wo heute die Tiger leben in dem historischen südlichen Teil des Zoos.

 In November of 2006, Nan gave birth to Nikita, and Crystal gave birth to Aurora and Anana, three cubs all born at the same time at the Toledo Zoo, and all fathered by Marty. Aurora and Anana have since moved to the Columbus Zoo, and Nikita is in the Kansas City Zoo with an older lady bear named Berlin. Crystal later gave birth to Siku, who now lives in the Louisville Zoo, and Suka and Sakari, who are about a year and a half old.

Im November 2006 gab es die Geburt von Nan mit Nikita und Crystal gebar Aurora und Anana, drei Jungen alle zur gleichen Zeit im Toledo Zoo geboren, und alle von Marty gezeugt.  Nan and Marty spend their time in different parts of the enclosure, and rarely come near each other when it is not mating season. Marty likes to pace and swim, and Nan likes to nap in the sun. When they did come close to each other, I heard some growling from Nan, and Marty backed off.

Nan und Marty verbringen ihre Zeit in verschiedenen Teilen des Geheges, und kommen nur selten in die Nähe miteinander, wenn es nicht gerade Paarungszeit ist. Marty liebt es, herumzulaufen und zu schwimmen, und Nan liegt gerne in der Sonne schlafend. Wenn sie mal nahe beieinander kamen, hörte ich etwas Knurren von Nan, und Marty zog sich zurück.

Nan likes to nap in the cave, and delights the children because they are so close to a real polar bear, and they can interact with this gentle lady bear.

Nan schläft auch gerne in der Höhle, und erfreut damit die Kinder, weil sie so nah an einem echten Eisbären sind, und sie mit dieser sanften Eisbärin interagieren können.

Heart of Africa draws Betty White to opening

The new Heart of Africa Exhibit is home to 11 giraffes

The world famous Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Columbus Ohio has done it again! The zoo has just opened its new 43 acre Heart of Africa exhibit, a magical place designed to give the visitor a vision of what it would be like to look out at the vast savannas of Africa.

Der weltberühmte Columbus Zoo and Aquarium hat es wieder getan! Der Zoo hat gerade seine neue 43 Hektar große Anlage * Das Herz von Afrika * gezeigt, ein magischer Ort,der entworfen wurde dem Besucher eine Vorstellung davon zu geben, wie es sein würde, um in den weiten Savannen Afrikas einen Einblick zu geben.

The grand opening on May 22 was made even more special by a visit from TV legend and animal lover Betty White, a longtime family friend of Columbus Zoo Director Emeritus Jungle Jack Hanna, who was also there to cut the ribbon, along with Tom Stalf, President and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Jack surprised Betty with the news that the entrance road to the Heart of Africa will be named Betty White Way, and showed her the sign.

Betty says that zoos are very important to the future of animals living in the wild.

"What we learn about animals in the zoo, they are the ambassadors for the wild communities that almost any species you mention is shrinking, she said. "We're not shrinking. There are plenty of us. Giraffes are everywhere!

The $30 million Heart of Africa, located just past the Polar Frontier, is home to 165 exotic animals. While the three lions, appear to live with the other animals, there are invisible barriers between the various areas.

An old jungle airplane rests between the lion enclosure and the public. The children can climb on the front part, and the lions can play with the tail section.

The savanna is home to 11 giraffes: 4 Reticulated Giraffes, and 7 Masai Giraffes, living in two separate areas. Visitors can pay $3 to feed the giraffes.

 to let the giraffes run, unlike most zoos.

Children can relive the adventures of Jack Hanna by climbing through a jungle aircraft, pretending to drive Jack Hanna's land rover, and visiting Jack's jungle shack, filled with memorabilia, and recreating Jack's experiences with the curious Vervet Monkeys, who regularly raided his camp during his safaris.

The area is also home to Grants zebras, cheetahs, greater kudu, warthogs, guinea fowl, several kinds of gazelles. There are also camels, and for $7 you can ride one of the “ships of the desert.”

Betty first visited the Columbus Zoo in 1979, when the zoo was much smaller. It has grown tremendously under the guidance of Jack Hanna and those who followed him in leading the zoo. She is impressed with how much the zoo has grown. She and Jack and his family have become close friends over the years, and frequently visit each other.

It was packed with excited visitors on the first day, with long lines at the entrance, waiting for the 9 a.m. opening and a chance to see Betty White. It will be nice to visit the Heart of Africa again, when it isn't so crowded. It is truly a special place in the heart of Ohio. As Betty said, they should change the name of her show from “Hot in Cleveland” to “Hot in Columbus.”
